Brucellosis is a frequent zoonosis in some regions of the world and may cause various symptoms. Neurobrucellosis is a rare but serious complication of the infection. Our case report describes the course of neurobrucellosis in a patient who had received a ventriculoperitoneal shunt in his native country 13 years prior to diagnosis of brucellosis.

In times of emerging multi-drug resistance among Gram-negative bacteria (including , Serovar Typhi), we observed relapse of typhoid fever following delayed response to treatment with meropenem, suggestive for limited clinical efficacy of the drug. Three previously published cases supported our suspicion. Within this context, we discuss the case details with a focus on potential explanations for insufficient clinical response to meropenem (e.

The overwhelming post splenectomy infection (OPSI) in splenectomised patients is a rare but severe infection mostly caused by encapsulated bacteria. We analyse the case of a 65-year-old female patient who was presented with clinical and laboratory findings indicating gastroenteritis. Two years years before admission, the patient underwent a splenectomy for a two stage splenic rupture following resuscitation for pulmonary embolism.

A Staphylococcus aureus strain that harbored a plasmid-borne inducibly expressed erm(C) gene was cultivated in the presence of the noninducers quinupristin, telithromycin, and ABT-773. After overnight incubation, 78 mutants that displayed combined resistance to macrolides, lincosamides, streptogramin B antibiotics, and ketolides were analyzed for the genetic basis of this altered resistance phenotype. Because this resistance phenotype is indicative for constitutively expressed erm(C) genes, the erm(C) regulatory regions of all mutants were sequenced.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether a Staphylococcus aureus strain that carried an inducibly expressed erm(A) gene might exhibit resistance to the non-inducers telithromycin, ABT-773, clindamycin, quinupristin, dalfopristin or the combination quinupristin-dalfopristin after incubation in the presence of inhibitory concentrations of any of these compounds. Whenever resistant mutants were obtained, these were investigated for the molecular basis of the altered resistance phenotype. Resistant mutants were not selected with dalfopristin or quinupristin-dalfopristin, but were obtained with the other four agents.

The purpose of the study was to analyze the distribution of the macrolide-resistance genes in 134 erythromycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus blood-culture isolates collected at 15 German university hospitals. The most prevalent resistance gene was ermC (68/134; 50.7%), followed by ermA (52/134; 38.
