Pichia fabianii, a yeast rarely causing human infections, was isolated from the blood of a patient with aortic valve endocarditis. The isolates were initially identified biochemically as Candida pelliculosa, but based on direct sequencing of the ITS2 region of rRNA, they were subsequently reidentified as P. fabianii.

Only little is known about normal oral bacterial flora in captive snakes containing Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. This microbe has been reported as a causative agent of numerous infections in reptiles. Therefore, the goal of the study was to detect its presence in the mouths of a significant number of healthy captive snakes and determining its susceptibility to antibiotics at 30 and 37 degrees C.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the dependence of Escherichia coli resistance to fluoroquinolones on their use in the outpatients and inpatients in the Olomouc region of the Czech Republic.

Methods: Data on inpatient antibiotic use were obtained from the database of the Department of Pharmacology and expressed as defined daily dose per 100 bed-days (DBD). Data on outpatient prescriptions were obtained from the database of General Health Insurance Company and expressed in defined daily doses per 1000 clients per day (DID).

Objective: To determine the occurrence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) in a community of the Czech Republic and a molecular-biological analysis of the VRE isolated.

Methods: Enterococci were isolated from the rectal swabs of healthy people in the Olomouc region (population 300,000), Czech Republic in the period of January-December 2003. The molecular-biological analysis of VRE was performed by analysis of isolated DNA, which was cleaved by restriction enzyme SmaI and separated by pulse field gel electrophoresis (PFGE).

There was followed the development of serological findings in patients with proved positivity only in classes IgA and/or IgM of chlamydial antibodies (without IgG), which can be suspected of showing "false" positivity. 184 patients were repeatedly examined for chlamydial antibodies in their sera (interval between collections up to three months) using a genus specific rELISA. Sera were also tested for the evidence of IgM antibodies against capside antigen of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and against cytomegalovirus (CMV) using ELISA methods.
