Article Synopsis
  • Musculoskeletal issues in children with cerebral palsy (CP) often lead to reduced ankle joint motion, and understanding factors like joint resistance and muscle structure can help address this problem.
  • This study involved 14 children with spastic CP and 14 typically developing (TD) children, measuring ankle dorsiflexion, joint resistance, and muscle architecture using advanced techniques like goniometry and diffusion tensor MRI.
  • Results showed that children with CP had significantly less passive dorsiflexion and greater joint stiffness compared to TD children, with negative correlations between stiffness, dorsiflexion, and muscle architecture properties.

Muscle architecture parameters, such as the fascicle length, pennation angle, and volume, are important muscle morphology characteristics. Accurate in vivo quantification of these parameters allows to detect changes due to pathologies, interventions, and rehabilitation trainings, which ultimately impact on muscles' force-producing capacity. In this study, we compared three-dimensional (3D) muscle architecture parameters of the tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius medialis, which were quantified by 3D freehand ultrasound (3DfUS) and a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), respectively.

Objectives: Antimicrobial resistance in anaerobic bacteria is increasing and there is a link between inappropriate antimicrobial therapy and poor clinical outcome in the treatment of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria. Accurate and timely antimicrobial susceptibility testing of anaerobic bacteria is therefore of critical importance. The European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) has recently described a disc diffusion susceptibility testing method for anaerobic bacteria using fastidious anaerobe agar (FAA) supplemented with 5% defibrinated horse blood (HB).

Skill learning induces changes in estimates of gray matter volume (GMV) in the human brain, commonly detectable with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Rapid changes in GMV estimates while executing tasks may however confound between- and within-subject differences. Fluctuations in arterial blood flow are proposed to underlie this apparent task-related tissue plasticity.

Knowledge about psychological distress in older cardiac arrest (CA) survivors is sparse, and the lack of comparisons with general populations make it difficult to draw any strong conclusions about prevalence and potential changes caused by CA. Our aim was to compare psychological distress between older CA survivors and a general population. This study included survivors 65-80 years old and an age- and sex-matched general population.
