Cytokine storm syndromes such as hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD), and COVID-19 cytokine storm (CCS) are characterized by markedly elevated inflammatory cytokines. However clinical measurement of serum cytokines is not widely available. This study examined the clinical utility of C-reactive protein (CRP) and ferritin, two inexpensive and widely available inflammatory markers, for distinguishing HLH from AOSD and CCS.

Background: Decisions about stroke prevention strategies in atrial fibrillation (AF) typically balance thromboembolism reduction against increased bleeding from oral anticoagulation therapy (OAC). When determining eligibility for OAC, guidelines recommend calculation of thromboembolic event rates using a validated score such as CHA2DS2-VASc. In contrast, routine calculation of bleeding scores is not recommended, in part because many patient factors associated with an increased risk of bleeding are associated with an even larger increased risk of ischemic stroke.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is uniformly lethal due to profound treatment resistance. Altered cellular metabolism is a key mediator of GBM treatment resistance. Uptake of the essential sulfur-containing amino acid methionine is drastically elevated in GBMs compared to normal cells, however, it is not known how this methionine is utilized or whether it relates to GBM treatment resistance.

Article Synopsis
  • Autoimmune diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and psoriasis have been linked to a higher risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), but the impact of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) on ASCVD risk is uncertain.
  • A study aimed to compare the incidence and prevalence of ASCVD among patients with CLE, SLE, and psoriasis against a control group without these diseases, utilizing data from a large health database.
  • The results showed that individuals with CLE and SLE had significantly higher odds of developing ASCVD compared to the control group, but psoriasis did not show the same increased risk.

Background: Socioeconomic disadvantage is associated with greater risks of hospital readmission and mortality among patients with heart failure (HF). However, it is less clear whether socioeconomic disadvantage has an immediate and lasting impact on the risk of admissions after the diagnosis of HF.

Methods: We used electronic health record data of patients aged 65 years and older with newly diagnosed HF between January 2015 and July 2018 in the Duke University Health System, with up to 8 years of follow-up.

Joint acoustic emissions (JAEs) have been used as a non-invasive sensing modality of joint health for different conditions such as acute injuries, osteoarthritis (OA), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Recent hardware improvements for sensing JAEs have made at-home sensing to supplement clinical visits a possibility. To complement these advances, models must be improved for JAEs to function as generalizable predictors of joint health.

This study aimed to explore the potential of a mobile health (mHealth) application (app) to support the delivery of a fall prevention and management program, Individualized Reduction of FaLLs (iROLL), for people with spinal cord injury (SCI) and multiple sclerosis (MS) who use wheelchairs and scooters (WC/S) full-time by seeking end-users' input into the functioning and ongoing design of the iROLL-O + mobile app. Two focus group discussions included nine adults with SCI or MS who used a WC/S for at least 75% of mobility, who experienced at least one fall in the past three years and have internet and access to an internet-capable device. One group had prior iROLL experience ( = 4); while the other had none ( = 5).

Background And Objectives: First-line therapy for most intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs) is endovascular embolization, but some require microsurgical ligation due to limited endovascular accessibility, anticipated lower cure rates, or unacceptable risk profiles. We investigated the most common surgically treated dAVF locations and the approaches and outcomes of each.

Methods: The Consortium for Dural Arteriovenous Fistula Outcomes Research database was retrospectively reviewed.

Background: Falls are prevalent among people living with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS) and Spinal Cord Injury (PwSCI) who use wheelchairs or scooters (WC/S) full time, however, there is a scarcity of evidence-based fall prevention and management programs.

Objective: To describe the systematic translation of an in-person fall prevention and management program (Individualized Reduction Of FaLLs - iROLL) for PwMS to an online platform, extending its scope to include PwSCI, and to evaluate the preliminary useability, usefulness, and safety of the intervention.

Methods: iROLL was systematically translated to an online platform (iROLL-O).

The fading affect bias (FAB) occurs in autobiographical memory when unpleasant emotions fade faster than pleasant emotions and the phenomenon appears to be a form of emotion regulation. As emotion regulation is positively related to problem solving, the current study examined FAB in the context of problem solving. In-person and online studies asked participants to provide basic demographics, describe their problem-solving abilities, and rate various healthy and unhealthy variables, including emotional intelligence and positive problem-solving attitudes.

  • Small area population counts are crucial for epidemiological studies in the U.S., but their quality and accuracy often remain unverified due to variations in data collection methods and processing by the Census Bureau's different data sources.
  • There are significant discrepancies among the U.S. Census Bureau's decennial census, intercensal population projections, and American Community Survey estimates, affecting small area disease and mortality rates used in public health research.
  • The proposed Bayesian population (BPop) model integrates these different data sources to produce more accurate, race-stratified population estimates for Georgia counties between 2006 and 2023 while accounting for source-specific errors and enabling predictions for years without reported data.

Background: While anticoagulation therapy is highly effective at treating venous thromboembolism, some patients can develop rapidly progressive thrombosis in multiple organs or sites despite therapeutic anticoagulation. Effective strategies to manage life-threatening thrombosis in these patients are elusive.

Objectives: We describe our experience using dual direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) therapy with a factor (F)Xa inhibitor (such as rivaroxaban or apixaban) and a FIIa inhibitor (dabigatran) for refractory cases of thrombosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Radiotherapy is the main treatment for a deadly type of brain cancer in kids called diffuse midline glioma (DMG), which has a special genetic mutation (H3K27M).
  • Researchers found that this mutation makes the tumors weaker against radiation when combined with a medicine called PARP inhibitor (like olaparib), which can help fight the cancer.
  • The study showed that using PARP inhibitors with radiotherapy also boosts the immune system, allowing it to attack the cancer cells better, which could be an important new treatment for kids with DMG.
