Lactation challenges of resident physicians- results of a national survey.

Background: There are unique challenges to parenting in residency and there is limited data to guide policy regarding lactation facilities and support for female physicians-in-training. We aimed to assess issues surrounding breast-feeding during graduate medical training for current residents or recent graduates from United States (US) residency programs.

Methods: A national cross-sectional survey was sent to current and recently graduated (2017 and later) female residents in June 2020.

During 2018 and 2019, the Mars Science Laboratory rover investigated the chemistry, morphology, and stratigraphy of Vera Rubin ridge (VRR). Using orbital data from the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars, scientists attributed the strong 860 nm signal associated with VRR to the presence of red crystalline hematite. However, Mastcam multispectral data and CheMin X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements show that the depth of the 860 nm absorption is negatively correlated with the abundance of red crystalline hematite, suggesting that other mineralogical or physical parameters are also controlling the 860 nm absorption.

Meaningful change definitions: sample size planning for experimental intervention research.

Experimental tests of interventions need to have sufficient sample size to constitute a robust test of the intervention's effectiveness with reasonable precision and power. To estimate the required sample size adequately, researchers are required to specify an effect size. But what effect size should be used to plan the required sample size? Various inroads into selecting the effect size have been suggested in the literature-including using conventions, prior research, and theoretical or practical importance.

Promoting scientific integrity through open science in health psychology: results of the Synergy Expert Meeting of the European health psychology society.

The article describes a position statement and recommendations for actions that need to be taken to develop best practices for promoting scientific integrity through open science in health psychology endorsed at a Synergy Expert Group Meeting. Sixteen Synergy Meeting participants developed a set of recommendations for researchers, gatekeepers, and research end-users. The group process followed a nominal group technique and voting system to elicit and decide on the most relevant and topical issues.

Direct targeting of energy metabolism to defeat cancer is not a recent strategy. Although quite a few drugs use cellular metabolism for their antitumor effect, no direct inhibitors of energy metabolism have been approved by the FDA. Currently, several inhibitors of lactate dehydrogenase A (LDH-A), a key player in glycolysis, are in development.

Association of Affordable Care Act Implementation With Ambulance Utilization for Asthma Emergencies in New York City, 2008-2018.

Importance: Emergency medical services (EMS) are an essential component of the health care system, but the effect of insurance expansion on EMS call volume remains unclear.

Objective: This study investigated the association between health insurance expansion and EMS dispatches for asthma, an ambulatory care-sensitive condition. We hypothesized that insurance expansion under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) would be associated with decreased EMS dispatches for asthma emergencies.

Pralatrexate (Folotyn; PLX) and belinostat (Beleodaq; BLS) are registered for the treatment of patients with peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) and are being considered for other lymphomas. In this study we investigated whether BLS had the ability to potentiate the cytotoxicity of PLX. A panel of lymphoma cell lines was used for the combination studies: the B-cell SUDHL-4, SUDHL-5, HT, Jeko-1 and T-cell Karpas-299 and Hut-78.

Ambulance Calls for Substance-Related Issues Before and After COVID-19.

: The United States is currently facing 2 epidemics: sustained morbidity and mortality from substance use and the more recent COVID-19 pandemic. We tested the hypothesis that the pandemic has disproportionately affected individuals with substance use disorder by evaluating average daily 9-1-1 ambulance calls for substance use-related issues compared with all other calls. : This was a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of 9-1-1 ambulance calls before and after the start of COVID-19 in Massachusetts.

"Open Sesame?": Biomarker Status of the Human Equilibrative Nucleoside Transporter-1 and Molecular Mechanisms Influencing its Expression and Activity in the Uptake and Cytotoxicity of Gemcitabine in Pancreatic Cancer.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an extremely aggressive tumor characterized by early invasiveness, rapid progression and resistance to treatment. For more than twenty years, gemcitabine has been the main therapy for PDAC both in the palliative and adjuvant setting. After the introduction of FOLFIRINOX as an upfront treatment for metastatic disease, gemcitabine is still commonly used in combination with nab-paclitaxel as an alternative first-line regimen, as well as a monotherapy in elderly patients unfit for combination chemotherapy.

Development of a fast screening method for selecting excipients in formulations using MD simulations, NMR and microscale thermophoresis.

Development of peptide therapeutics generally involves screening of excipients that inhibit peptide-peptide interactions, hence aggregation, and improve peptide stability. We used the therapeutic peptide plectasin to develop a fast screening method that combines microscale thermophoresis titration assays and molecular dynamics simulations to relatively rank the excipients with respect to binding affinity and to study key peptide-excipient interaction hotspots on a molecular level, respectively. Additionally, H-C-HSQC NMR titration experiments were performed to validate the fast screening approach.

C-Sorafenib and O-HO PET for Early Evaluation of Sorafenib Therapy.

Sorafenib leads to clinical benefit in a subgroup of patients, whereas all are exposed to potential toxicity. Currently, no predictive biomarkers are available. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether C-sorafenib and O-HO PET have potential to predict treatment efficacy.

The role of the microbiome in drug resistance in gastrointestinal cancers.

: The microbiota is recognized for its impact on both human health and disease. The human microbiota is made up of trillions of cells, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The largest population of microbes reside in the gut, prompting research for better understanding of the impact of gastrointestinal microbiota in different diseases.

A comprehensive quantification of global nitrous oxide sources and sinks.

Nitrous oxide (NO), like carbon dioxide, is a long-lived greenhouse gas that accumulates in the atmosphere. Over the past 150 years, increasing atmospheric NO concentrations have contributed to stratospheric ozone depletion and climate change, with the current rate of increase estimated at 2 per cent per decade. Existing national inventories do not provide a full picture of NO emissions, owing to their omission of natural sources and limitations in methodology for attributing anthropogenic sources.

Promoting ear plugs at music events: evaluation of the Celebrate Safe approach.

Objective: The Celebrate Safe approach is a collaboration between public health organisations and music event/venue organisers to encourage health promotion interventions in nightlife settings and at music events. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the Celebrate Safe approach with regard to its impact on use of ear plugs among visitors of music events.

Design: A pre-registered cluster-randomised controlled trial conducted at music events throughout the Netherlands ( = 15).

The geographic distribution of the US pediatric dermatologist workforce: A national cross-sectional study.

Background /objectives: Although 82% of pediatricians report that their patients have difficulty accessing pediatric dermatologists, the regions with greatest need for the specialty are not well-defined. We aimed to determine the geographic distribution of pediatric dermatologists relative to the number of children and pediatric generalists.

Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study of all US board-certified pediatric dermatologists, generalists (defined as pediatricians and family medicine physicians), and children in 2020.

Didactic Benefits of Surgery on Body Donors during Live Surgery Events in Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Background: Live surgery events serve as a valuable tool for surgical education, but also raise ethical concerns about patient safety and professional performance. In the present study, we evaluate the technical feasibility and didactic benefits of live surgery on body donors compared to real patients.

Methods: A live surgery session performed on a body donor's cadaver embalmed in ethanol-glycerol-lysoformin was integrated into the live surgery program presented at a major gynecological convention of minimally invasive surgery.

Background/aim: A new class of imidazo[2,1-b][1,3,4]thiadiazole compounds have recently been evaluated as inhibitors of phosphorylation of focal adhesion kinase (FAK) in pancreatic cancer. FAK is overexpressed in mesothelioma and has recently emerged as an interesting target for the treatment of this disease.

Materials And Methods: Ten imidazo[2,1-b][1,3,4]thiadiazole compounds characterized by indole bicycle and a thiophene ring, were evaluated for their cytotoxic activity in two primary cell cultures of peritoneal mesothelioma, MesoII and STO cells.

The Role of the Microbiome in Cancer and Therapy Efficacy: Focus on Lung Cancer.

The microbiome is extremely important for human health; more recently its role in the context of cancer became clear. Microbial effects range from enhancing cancer immunity and cancer therapy efficacy, to promoting cancer progression and inhibiting treatment efficacy. These broad implications led researchers to investigate these specific interactions, as well as how modification of the microbiome can improve cancer survival and treatment efficacy.

As a biorefinery platform host, Escherichia coli has been used extensively to produce metabolites of commercial interest. Integration of foreign DNA onto the bacterial genome allows for stable expression overcoming the need for plasmid expression and its associated instability. Despite the development of numerous tools and genome editing technologies, the question of where to incorporate a synthetic pathway remains unanswered.

Herein, we report a comprehensive study describing the reaction mechanism through kinetic studies, isotope-labeling experiments, F NMR, electrochemical studies, synthetic probes, and computational experiments.
