- Disease-related undernutrition is a serious issue in European hospitals but is often overlooked, prompting the Council of Europe in 1999 to gather data on hospital nutrition programs through a network of national experts.
- The review identified five major challenges in hospital nutritional care: unclear responsibilities, insufficient education, limited patient influence and knowledge, poor cooperation among staff, and lack of management involvement.
- To address these challenges, a coordinated effort from national authorities and hospital personnel is essential for improving nutritional care and support for patients.
It has been suggested that the ability to drive a car is impaired in patients with cirrhosis of the liver and minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE). However, the only study using an on-road driving test did not reveal such an impairment. In a prospective controlled study, we evaluated patients with cirrhosis of the liver for MHE and the ability to drive a car.

In 1999, the Council of Europe decided to collect information regarding Nutrition programmes in hospitals and for this purpose a network consisting of national experts from 12 of the Partial Agreement member states was established. The aim was to review the current practice in Europe regarding hospital food provision, to highlight deficiencies and to issue recommendations in improve the nutritional care and support of hospitalised patients.
