This work investigated the application of a reporter gene bioassay in assessing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure in trainee firefighters. In the PAH CALUX bioassay, the PAH-induced activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor in a reporter cell line is recorded by increased luminescence. A repeated measurement study was performed, collecting urine and skin wipe samples at two baseline sessions (spring and autumn) and after three firefighting sessions: one with wood fuel, one with gas fuel, and one without fire.

Desmoplastic small round blue cell tumor (DSRCT) is a highly aggressive fatal sarcoma without evidence-based therapeutic guidelines. We present here seven patients with DSRCT including immunohistochemistry combined with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), next generation sequencing (NGS,  = 6) as well as OncoScan array ( = 3) analyses and show consecutive therapeutic approaches. All seven DSRCT patients presented with an extended abdominal mass; median age at diagnosis was 24.

Drugs that lower plasma apolipoprotein B (ApoB)-containing lipoproteins are central to treating advanced atherosclerosis and provide partial protection against clinical events. Previous research showed that lowering ApoB-containing lipoproteins stops plaque inflammation, but how these drugs affect the heterogeneous population of plaque cells derived from smooth muscle cells (SMCs) is unknown. SMC-derived cells are the main cellular component of atherosclerotic lesions and the source of structural components that determine the size of plaques and their propensity to rupture and trigger thrombosis, the proximate cause of heart attack and stroke.

Non-invasive computed tomography (CT) of an adult sand tiger shark Rafinesque, 1810 is used to provide an interactive three-dimensional 'general' shark (Selachimorpha) anatomy atlas. Given its post-cranial body morphology, the sand tiger shark appeared to be a well-chosen candidate and through comparison of the sand tiger shark with several other representatives of all eight established orders of sharks, we confirm that the relatively large degree of mineralization of the endoskeleton, along with the overall size, makes the sand tiger shark an ideal candidate for skeletal segmentation and construction of a skeletal atlas using conventional CT. This atlas both increases accessibility to the internal morphological features of the sand tiger shark and provides a more generalized overview of the skeletal anatomy of sharks and can aid as a supplement to destructive fresh dissection of specimens in the future and the construction of future skeletal atlases of other less mineralized sharks.
