Caves represent a specific environment with a special microclimate and fauna adapted to it. However, we have still a restricted knowledge on soil fauna communities in an environments with a marked microclimate gradient at the interface between cave and surface habitats. In the present study, we investigated the community patterns of dominant soil microarthropod group, oribatid mites, and their relationship to environmental factors across the microclimate gradient along a transect with seven study sites from cold and wet cave entrance zone to warm and drier deciduous forest.

Oribatid mites are important decomposers of dead organic matter in soils across the world. Their origin dates back at least 380 Mya. The shallow underground of forested scree slopes represents a little-studied subterranean biotope. In this paper, species diversity and depth distribution of terrestrial isopod communities studied in the depth profile (5-95 cm from the surface) of eight forested scree slopes in the Western Carpathians (Slovakia) is discussed. The southern edge of the Western Carpathians where the study sites are located represents the northernmost limit of distribution of obligate subterranean fauna in Europe.

High-altitude and alpine areas are predicted to experience rapid and substantial increases in future temperature, which may have serious impacts on soil carbon, nutrient and soil fauna. Here we report the impact of 20 years of experimental warming on soil properties and soil mites in three contrasting plant communities in alpine/subarctic Sweden. Long-term warming decreased juvenile oribatid mite density, but had no effect on adult oribatids density, total mite density, any major mite group or the most common species.
