A study on 5CB liquid crystal composites with SiO nanoparticles and an additional commixture with FeO nanoparticles using light transmission and SAW measurements is presented. The prepared liquid crystal composites exhibited an interesting memory effect characterized by the hysteresis of both light transmission and SAW attenuation responses investigated in the nematic phase. While in the case of SiO nanoparticles as dopants, the liquid crystal composite showed an improvement in the memory effect, the addition of FeO magnetic nanoparticles resulted in the memory effect decreasing.

The effect of spherical magnetic nanoparticles with different size (5, 10, 15, and 20 nm) and volume concentration (10-3, 5 × 10-4, and 10-4) on liquid crystal 4-cyano-4'-hexylbiphenyl (6CB) behavior was investigated using surface acoustic wave (SAW). The attenuation response of SAW propagating along with the substrate/liquid crystal interface was used to study the structural changes induced by an applied magnetic field. The obtained results showed the shift of the threshold magnetic field with an increase in the volume concentration of nanoparticles toward lower fields and also the decrease in the isotropic-nematic phase transition temperature depending on the nanoparticle size and the nanoparticle volume fraction.

Clustering of magnetic nanoparticles can dramatically change their collective magnetic properties, and it consequently may influence their performance in biomedical and technological applications. Owing to tailored surface modification of magnetic particles such composites represent stable systems. Here, we report ferronematic mixtures that contain anisotropic clusters of mesogen-hybridized cobalt ferrite nanoparticles dispersed in liquid crystal host studied by different experimental methods-magnetization measurements, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), and capacitance measurements.

The effect of the liquid crystalline host on structural changes in magnetosomes based on ferronematics is studied using the surface acoustic wave (SAW) technique supported by some capacitance and light transmission measurements. The measurement of the attenuation response of SAW propagating along the interface between LC and the piezoelectric substrate is used to study processes of structural changes under magnetic field. The magnetosome nanoparticles of the same volume concentration were added to three different nematic LCs, 5CB, 6CB, and E7.

Understanding the formation process and the spatial distribution of nanoparticle (NP) clusters on amyloid fibrils is an essential step for the development of NP-based methods to inhibit aggregation of amyloidal proteins or reverse the assembling trend of the proto-fibrillary complexes that prompts pathogenesis of neuro degeneration. For this, a detailed structural determination of the diverse hybrid assemblies that are forming is needed, which can be achieved by advanced X-ray scattering techniques. Using a combined solution small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) approach, this study investigates the intrinsic trends of the interaction between lysozyme amyloid fibrils (LAFs) and FeO NPs before and after fibrillization at nanometer resolution.

We demonstrate experimentally that the anchoring of a nematic liquid crystal on a solid substrate together with the anchoring of the liquid crystal on a nanoparticle surface induces orientational self-assembly of anisometric nanoparticles in liquid crystal droplets. The observed phenomenon opens a novel route for fabrication of thin colloidal films with tailored properties.

Various pathological processes in humans are associated with biogenic iron accumulation and the mineralization of iron oxide nanoparticles, especially magnetite. Ferritin has been proposed as a precursor to pathological magnetite mineralization. This study quantifies spectroscopically the release of ferrous ions from native ferritin and magnetoferritin as a model system for pathological ferritin in the presence of potent natural reducing agents (vitamins C and B) over time.

This research study attempts to prove the concept of the applicability of hyperthermia to treating the lysozyme amyloid fibrils (LAF)'s self-assembled fibrillary aggregates by a feedback-modulated temperature controller ranging from 26 °C to 80 °C, and separately, by near-infrared (NIR) laser-irradiated cesium tungstate (CsWO) nanoparticle (NPs). The dependence of the final morphology of the amyloidal assembly on external heating and the photothermal effect of the NPs on treating the fibrillary assembly were investigated and analyzed. Experimentally, atomic force microscopy (AFM), optical stereoscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used primarily to ensure mutual interaction between LAF and NPs, optically elucidate the surface contour and final fibrillary assembly upon the influence of thermal treatment, and further reveal fine-details of the optical samples.

We present colloidal nanocomposites formed by incorporating magnetite Fe O nanoparticles (MNPs) with lysozyme amyloid fibrils (LAFs). Preparation of two types of solutions, with and without addition of salt, was carried out to elucidate the structure of MNPs-incorporated fibrillary nanocomposites and to study the effect of the presence of salt on the stability of the nanocomposites. The structural morphology of the LAFs and their interaction with MNPs were analyzed by atomic force microscopy and small-angle x-ray scattering measurements.

The interaction of amyloid β-peptide (Aβ) with the iron-storage protein ferritin was studied in vitro. We have shown that Aβ during fibril formation process is able to reduce Fe(III) from the ferritin core (ferrihydrite) to Fe(II). The Aβ-mediated Fe(III) reduction yielded a two-times-higher concentration of free Fe(II) than the spontaneous formation of Fe(II) by the ferritin itself.

The influence of magnetic field on the isotropic-to-nematic phase transition temperature is investigated in neat bent-core and calamitic liquid crystals, in their mixture, and in samples doped with spherical magnetic nanoparticles for two different orientations of the magnetic field. A magnetic-field-induced negative or positive shift of the transition temperature was detected depending on the magnetic field orientation with respect to the initial orientation of the nematic phase, and on the type of liquid crystal matrix.

We report on experimental studies focusing on the dynamic ac magnetic susceptibility of a ferronematic. It has been shown recently, that in the isotropic phase of a ferronematic, a weak dc bias magnetic field of a few oersteds increases the ac magnetic susceptibility. This increment vanishes irreversibly if the substance is cooled down to the nematic phase, but can be reinduced by applying the dc bias field again in the isotropic phase [Tomašovičová, N.
