Emergency responders (police, fire, ambulance and defence force personnel) risk exposure to dangerous and traumatic events, and the possible subsequent development of post-traumatic stress disorder. Consequently, partners of these emergency responders risk developing secondary traumatic stress (STS) from vicarious exposure to the trauma through communication and engagement with their responders. A mixed-methods study of the partners of emergency responders in New Zealand examined the extent of such partner-associated STS.

Multimillijoule coherent terahertz bursts from picosecond laser-irradiated metal foils.

Ultrahigh-power terahertz (THz) radiation sources are essential for many applications, for example, THz-wave-based compact accelerators and THz control over matter. However, to date none of the THz sources reported, whether based upon large-scale accelerators or high-power lasers, have produced THz pulses with energies above the millijoule (mJ) level. Here, we report a substantial increase in THz pulse energy, as high as tens of mJ, generated by a high-intensity, picosecond laser pulse irradiating a metal foil.

Introduction: The New Zealand (NZ) Ministry of Health's Primary Health Care Strategy (2001) has an overall vision of better health for all and the reduction of health inequalities between different population groups. This article presents a consensus statement that arose from the views of participants that attended the multidisciplinary conference "The Health of the Health Professional", in Auckland in November 2011. A healthy workforce is the key to improving the health of all New Zealanders. Yet health practitioners' health is of concern, and despite the evidence of real problems little has been done to constructively and systematically address these issues.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate occupational stress amongst audiologists, along with quantification of their professional quality of life: Burnout, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction.

Design: A cross-sectional postal survey research design using an audiology occupational stress questionnaire (AOSQ), and the professional quality of life (ProQOL) instrument.

Study Sample: The sample consisted of members of the New Zealand Audiological Society.

Objective: Conceptualising the doctor-patient relationship as a 'window mirror' exposes care delivery from doctor to self, doctor to patient, patient to self, and patient to doctor. These directions have not been measured concurrently. We aimed to develop and validate a patient questionnaire informed by this model.

The health of the male population is a substantial contributor to the health of the nation. In general, men have a poorer health status and lower utilisation of health services than women. They have a lower life expectancy and are more likely to die from avoidable deaths than women.

Frequency and effects of non-English consultations in New Zealand general practice.

Aims: To identify the frequency of non-English languages used in general practice consultations and to explore the effects on practice for general practitioners (GPs).

Methods: Randomly selected Auckland GPs were telephone-interviewed using standardised questions. Interview data were entered electronically in real time and audiotaped.

Methods: Clinical case notes and reports of further investigations were analysed in the light of the existing literature concerning DVT and travellers.

Burnout in psychiatrists: an etiological model.

Objective: This article reviews burnout in psychiatrists. A model of burnout is presented which considers three factors: those which may predispose, precipitate, and perpetuate burnout. Lastly, recommendations are made for future research.
