Objectives: This article aims to investigate the impact of prenatal counseling on subsequent parents' experiences during in-patient care of their infant(s) and whether feelings of parents with deceased infants are different in principle.
Study Design: A questionnaire was sent to 99 families with a child born less than 26 weeks' gestational age at Medical School Hanover 2000-2008. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher exact t test and chi-square tests in IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 20.
Objectives: To examine the course of mental health and psychological factors over time in persons with a recent spinal cord injury and to determine whether change in psychological factors is associated with change in mental health.
Design: Prospective cohort study in the Netherlands with 3 measurement time-points.
Subjects: A total of 60 persons with recently acquired spinal cord injury.
Objective: In recent years the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA), a paramount decision-making body of the German health care system challenged the approval of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for regular reimbursement, including lipoprotein apheresis therapy. Years before an interdisciplinary German apheresis working group, established by members of both German Societies of Nephrology (Verband Deutsche Nierenzentren (VDN), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nephrologie (DGfN)), initiated a revision of the indication of lipoprotein apheresis therapy according to current guidelines and recommendations for the treatment of lipid disorders. This working group was convinced, that data derived from a registry would support lipoprotein apheresis as a therapy for severe hyperlipidemic patients suffering from progressive cardiovascular diseases.

We report that neuronal ablation of the H3K4-specific methyltransferase, Kmt2a/Mixed-lineage leukemia 1 (Mll1), in mouse postnatal forebrain and adult prefrontal cortex (PFC) is associated with increased anxiety and robust cognitive deficits without locomotor dysfunction. In contrast, only mild behavioral phenotypes were observed after ablation of the Mll1 ortholog Kmt2b/Mll2 in PFC.

Background: The German Lipoprotein Apheresis Registry (DLAR) has been initiated by members of the Nephrology Foundation (WiNe), the German association of kidney centres (DN), the German society of nephrology (DGfN) and additional medical associations taking part in the apheresis working group. Its goal is the introduction of a substantial database, suitable to provide statistical evidence for the assessment of extracorporeal procedures. Data have been added to the DLAR since October 2011.

A significant portion of cases diagnosed with schizophrenia show deficits in GAD1 RNA and protein levels in multiple areas of adult cerebral cortex, possibly reflecting molecular or cellular defects in subtypes of GABAergic interneurons essential for network synchronization and cognition. View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe seafloor at an open ocean finfish aquaculture facility in the western Gulf of Maine, USA was monitored from 1999 to 2008 by sampling sites inside a predicted impact area modeled by oceanographic conditions and fecal and food settling characteristics, and nearby reference sites. Univariate and multivariate analyses of benthic community measures from box core samples indicated minimal or no significant differences between impact and reference areas. These findings resulted in development of an adaptive monitoring protocol involving initial low-cost methods that required more intensive and costly efforts only when negative impacts were initially indicated.

The net effect of pollen production on fecundity in plants can range from negative--when self-pollen interferes with fecundity due to incompatibility mechanisms, to positive--when pollen availability is associated with increased pollinator visitation and fecundity due to its utilization as a reward. We investigated the responses of bees to pollen and nectar rewards, and the effects of these rewards on pollen deposition and fecundity in the hermaphroditic succulent shrub Aloe tenuior. Self-pollinated plants failed to set fruit, but their ovules were regularly penetrated by self-pollen tubes, which uniformly failed to develop into seeds as expected from ovarian self-incompatibility (or strong early inbreeding depression).

Study Design: A structured questionnaire involving management of home oxygen therapy was sent to all German pediatric departments (n = 293).
Many well-established classical biomolecular force fields, fitted on the solvation properties of single ions, do not necessarily describe all the details of ion pairing accurately, especially for complex polyatomic ions. Depending on the target application, it might not be sufficient to reproduce the thermodynamics of ion pairing, but it may also be necessary to correctly capture structural details, such as the coordination mode. In this work, we analyzed how classical force fields can be optimized to yield a realistic description of these different aspects of ion pairing.
