A shearing interferometer is presented that uses polarization control to shear the wavefront and to modulate the interference pattern. The shear is generated by spatial walk-off in a birefringent crystal. By adjusting the orientation of the birefringent crystal, the components of the wavefront gradient can be independently measured to allow determination of the full wavefront vector gradient as well as reconstruction of the wavefront.

It may be advantageous in advanced gravitational-wave detectors to replace conventional beam splitters and Fabry-Perot input mirrors with diffractive elements. In each of these applications, the wavefront distortions produced by the absorption and subsequent heating of the grating can limit the maximum useful optical power. We present data on the wavefront distortions induced in a laser probe beam for both the reflected and diffracted beams from a grating that is heated by a Gaussian laser beam and compare these results to a simple theory of the wavefront distortions induced by thermoelastic deformations.

The polar Kerr effect in the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 was measured with high precision using a Sagnac interferometer with a zero-area Sagnac loop. We observed nonzero Kerr rotations as big as 65 nanorad appearing below Tc in large domains. Our results imply a broken time-reversal symmetry state in the superconducting state of Sr2RuO4, similar to 3He-A.

We demonstrate an optical cavity that supports an eigenmode with a flattop spatial profile--a profile that has been proposed for the cavities in the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory, the second-generation laser interferometric gravitational wave observatory--because it provides better averaging of the spatially dependent displacement noise on the surface of the mirror than a Gaussian beam. We describe the deformable mirror that we fabricated to tailor the shape of the eigenmode of the cavity and show that this cavity is a factor of 2 more sensitive to misalignments than a comparable cavity with spherical mirrors supporting an eigenmode with a Gaussian profile.

Second-generation interferometric gravitational-wave detectors will use a technique called resonant sideband extraction (RSE) to improve the sensitivity in a narrow, tunable, frequency band. We present a configuration in which we use polarization detection to allow a continuously tunable power-recycled RSE interferometer for a control scheme similar to those of the first-generation detectors. A mathematical model describing this configuration and the results from a tabletop prototype are presented that demonstrate this configuration.

We report on our prototype experiment that uses a 4-m detuned resonant sideband extraction interferometer with suspended mirrors, which has almost the same configuration as the next-generation, gravitational-wave detectors. We have developed a new control scheme and have succeeded in the operation of such an interferometer with suspended mirrors for the first time ever as far as we know. We believe that this is the first such instrument that can see the radiation pressure signal enhancement, which can improve the sensitivity of next-generation gravitational-wave detectors.
