Context: Curcumin has been reported to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and hypoglycaemic properties, besides reducing mortality in sepsis.
Objective: This study evaluates the biological activities of a curcumin dispersion formulated by spray-drying in experimental sepsis.
Materials And Methods: Male Wistar rats were subjected to sepsis by caecal ligation and puncture (CLP), controls were sham operated.
Caffeine induces loss of calcium and influences the normal development of bone. This study investigated the effects of coffee on bone metabolism in rats by biochemical measurement of calcium, bone densitometry and histometry. Male rats, born of female treated daily with coffee and with coffee intake since born, were anesthetized, subjected to extraction of the upper right incisor, and sacrificed 7, 21 and 42 days after surgery.

Female Wistar rats were ovariectomized or sham-operated. Half of the ovariectomized rats were fed a low Ca++ diet (ovx*) and the remaining ovariectomized (ovx) and sham animals received a standard chow.

In the present study, we assessed the importance of glucose to cryoresistance of two anuran amphibians: the frog Rana catesbeiana and the toad Bufo paracnemis. Both animals were exposed to -2 degrees C for measurements of plasma glucose levels, liver and muscle glycogen content, haematocrit and red blood cell volume.

Male pubertal rats (40 days old) were immobilized 6 h per day for 15 days. Plasma concentrations of corticosterone, prolactin and testosterone were significantly augmented following immobilization, whereas plasma luteinizing hormone decreased and follicle-stimulating hormone was not altered.

The calculated Mr of the purified enzyme was 80,000 by denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and 160,000 by gel filtration on Sephacryl S-300, suggesting a dimeric structure for its native form. In the absence of metal ions, the p-nitrophenylphosphatase activity of the purified enzyme was 4223.

Male Wistar rats (40 days old) were immobilized 6 h a day for 60 days. Following immobilization, plasma concentrations of corticosterone and prolactin increased 135% and 48%, respectively, while plasma luteinizing hormone and testosterone presented a significant decrease of 29% and 37%, respectively.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether low-intensity ultrasound has a stimulatory effect on the androgenic activity of aged testes. In addition to plasma testosterone, LH and FSH, the testicular spermatogenic status was also analysed.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe purpose of the present study was to investigate whether or not low-intensity ultrasound exposure (20 mW/cm2 average intensity) accelerates the repair of rat germinal epithelium damaged by an antispermatogenic agent. The results from analysis of testicular weight and DNA content, sperm production and epididymal sperm concentration showed that the time needed for the reestablishment of the spermatogenic process following busulfan treatment was not reduced by ultrasound energy suggesting that, in contrast to many other mammalian tissues, the seminiferous epithelium is refractory to ultrasound stimulation.

Sympathetic denervation caused an increase in intratesticular progesterone levels in prepubertal and early pubertal rats in addition to a decrease in androstenedione and testosterone levels in prepubertal animals, thus indicating a decrease in the conversion of progesterone into androgen, probably by blocking the steroidogenic enzymatic pathway at the 17 alpha-hydroxylase/17, 20 desmolase level. A lower degree of testicular maturation, probably related to reduced androgen activity, was observed in prepubertal and early pubertal sympathectomized rats.

Pubertal male Wistar rats were submitted to bilateral castration and killed 7 or 14 days later; an additional group of castrated rats was submitted to ultrasound stimulation of the ventral region lying above the accessory sex glands, for 20 min a day from the 7th to the 14th day postcastration. Control intact rats were age-matched to the different treated groups. Seminal vesicle growth and secretory activity were investigated on the basis of weight and fructose content, respectively.

Testes of prepubertal, pubertal and adult Wistar rats were stimulated with low-intensity pulsed ultrasound for 20 min a day, for 7 days. No significant changes were found in the spermatogenic activity as well as in plasma LH and FSH levels following ultrasound treatment. The testicular androgenic activity, however, was significantly increased in prepubertal treated animals, in addition to a significant increase in seminal vesicle growth and secretory activity.

The testes of prepubertal male rats (N = 12) aged 21 days were stimulated with low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (1.5-MHz frequency, 1-KHz repetition pulse rate, 200-microseconds pulse width, 30-V peak-to-peak amplitude and 20-mW/cm2 intensity) applied to the skin for 20 min/day for 7 days. Control rats (N = 8) were manipulated in the same manner but not submitted to ultrasound.

Biochemical and morphometric methods revealed that removal of sympathetic innervation prevents fructose secretion in the prostate and seminal vesicle, in addition to promoting reduced efficiency of delivery by the latter.

Thus, oral hygiene was evaluated in a study conducted on 336 1st-year students enrolled in the Pharmacy and Dentistry Course of Ribeirão Preto, USP. The results showed that 42% of the students consult a dentist twice a year; the frequency of tooth brushing was four times a day, with no difference between the use of soft (48%) and medium (49%) brushes, and brushing time was 1 to 5 min.

Daily administration of 150 IU vitamin A/gram of body weight in mice, during 10 days, led the authors to observe: submandibular glands showed acini of slightly reduced size, with lower cells whose contours were not always sharp and containing smaller number of cytoplasmic granules. The nuclei of the acinar cells were reduced in volume. The granulose ducts were similar to those of the controls in size but showed signs of degeneration as well as cell nuclei of reduced volume.

A decrease in rat submandibular gland parenchyma could be observed with increasing age, consequent to an apparent increase in the proportion of intralobular ducts. Signs of acinar atrophy were noted with nuclei of smaller volume. A great variety of nuclear sizes and shapes was also observed.
