Surveillance of effects of HPV vaccination in Belgium.

Background: Early effects of HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccination are reflected by changes observable in young women attending cervical cancer screening.

Subject And Methods: The SEHIB study included HPV geno-typing of ∼6000 continuous and 650 pathological cervical cell specimen as well as biopsies, collected from women in Belgium in 2010-2014. Data were linked to vaccination status.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess and compare, in primary pig teeth, the pulp response after a pulpotomy using either Biodentine (a new tricalcium-silicate cement), white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA), or formocresol (FC) and repeat the same after direct pulp capping using either Biodentine, WMTA, or calcium hydroxide.

Methods: A total of 180 primary teeth from 9 healthy 4-month-old female pigs were divided into 3 experimental periods (7, 28, and 90 days) for each material used for the pulpotomy and direct pulp capping treatments. Seven, 28, and 90 days later, the animals were euthanized and the specimens were prepared for histological examination and evaluation.

Unlabelled: Interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) is an important transcription factor in Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling, a pathway that is known to play a critical role in liver ischemia-reperfusion injury. In order to decipher the involvement of IRF3 in this setting, we first compared the intensity of hepatic lesions in IRF3-deficient versus wildtype mice. We found increased levels of blood transaminases, enhanced liver necrosis, and more pronounced neutrophil infiltrates in IRF3-deficient mice.

Background And Objectives: To evaluate the long-term prognostic value of the combination of the EORTC risk calculator and proapoptotic, antiapoptotic, proliferation, and invasiveness molecular markers in predicting the outcome of intermediate- and high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) treated with intravesical Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) therapy.

Materials And Methods: This study included 42 patients accrued prospectively presenting with intermediate- to high-risk NMIBC (high-grade T1 tumors or multiple rapidly recurrent tumors refractory to intravesical chemotherapy) treated with transurethral resection (TUR) and BCG. TUR samples were analyzed for the molecular markers p53, p21 waf1/cip, Bcl-2, CyclinD1, and metallothionein 9 (MMP9) using immunohistochemistry.

Critical role of regulatory T cells in Th17-mediated minor antigen-disparate rejection.

Th17-mediated immune responses have been recently identified as novel pathogenic mechanisms in a variety of conditions; however, their importance in allograft rejection processes is still debated. In this paper, we searched for MHC or minor Ag disparate models of skin graft rejection in which Th17 immune responses might be involved. We found that T cell-derived IL-17 is critical for spontaneous rejection of minor but not major Ag-mismatched skin grafts.

Th2-biased immune responses characterizing neonates may influence the later onset of allergic disease. The risk to develop melanoma from small or medium size congenital naevus remain controversial. The main goal of the present study was to determine the interest of three immunohistochemical markers (Ki67, HMB45 and p53) in predicting malignant transformation of these congenital naevi and to see if a specific immunohistochemical profile of such transformed naevi can be identified. The markers (Ki67, HMB45 and p53) have been used retrospectively on sections of small or medium size congenital naevi (group NC, n = 15), of melanoma developed on small or medium size congenital naevi (group MNC, n = 15) and of melanoma developed on acquired naevi (group MNA, n = 15).

The growing development of composite tissue allografts (CTA) highlights the need for tolerance induction protocols. Herein, we developed a mouse model of heterotopic limb allograft in a stringent strain combination in which potentially tolerogenic strategies were tested taking advantage of donor stem cells in the grafted limb. BALB/c allografts were transplanted into C57BL/6 mice treated with anti-CD154 mAb, nondepleting anti-CD4 combined to either depleting or nondepleting anti-CD8 mAbs.

Dendritic cell (DC) vaccines are used for the induction of anti-tumor T cell reaction in melanoma patients. DC are generated in vitro, pulsed with antigen and matured prior to injection. They are supposed to migrate to lymph nodes and to present the processed antigen to naive T cells allowing activation of tumor-specific lymphocytes.

Canine hyperplastic intraepidermal pustular and suprabasal acantholytic dermatosis with features of human pemphigus vegetans.

Pemphigus vegetans is a rare autoimmune blistering acantholytic dermatosis of humans that combines unusually hyperplastic and verrucous pustular skin lesions and mucosal erosions. We report herein the clinical, histopathologic, and immunologic findings in a dog whose lesions resembled, but were not identical to, those of human pemphigus vegetans. A 4-year-old male Greater Swiss Mountain Dog presented with multifocal cutaneous verrucous and crusted papules and pustules, as well as skin and mucosal erosions and ulcers.

Maspin is a member of the serpin family of protease inhibitors. It is a 42 kDa cytoplasmic protein that is reported to have tumour suppressor activity. The loss of maspin gene expression is correlated with increased invasiveness and the risk of metastases in breast cancer.

Evaluation of BM-573, a novel TXA2 synthase inhibitor and receptor antagonist, in a porcine model of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion.

Aims: To investigate whether BM-573 (N-tert-butyl-N'-[2-(4'-methylphenylamino)-5-nitro-benzenesulfonyl]urea), an original combined thromboxane A2 synthase inhibitor and receptor antagonist, prevents reperfusion injury in acutely ischemic pigs.

Methods: Twelve animals were randomly divided in two groups: a control group (n = 6) intravenously infused with vehicle, and a BM-573-treated group (n = 6) infused with BM-573 (10 mg kg(-1) h(-1)). In both groups, the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery was occluded for 60 min and reperfused for 240 min.

Colorimetric analysis of pigmented skin lesions: a pilot study with the Visi-Chroma VC-100 device.

Background: Definition of the colour of pigmented skin lesions (PSLs) with the naked eye remains subjective and may be influenced by lighting. This problem underlines the usefulness of instrumental assessments such as epiluminescence microscopy and colorimetric devices.

Objective And Methods: We describe here a new method of colour analysis of PSLs with the Visi-Chroma VC-100 device, which illuminates the surface of the skin with white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and analyses the reflected light by a red-green-blue (RGB) charge-coupled device (CCD) colour camera.

High serum galectin-3 in advanced melanoma: preliminary results.

Background: Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a member of the family of beta-galactoside-binding mammalian lectins, and has been implicated in tumour invasion and metastatic process in vitro and in vivo.

Aim: To determine whether an increase in serum Gal-3 production could be found in patients with advanced metastatic melanoma.

Methods: We collected 18 sera from patients with AJCC stage IV metastatic melanomas and 20 sera from healthy volunteers.

A rare case of renal haemangioma of the renal pelvis is reported. The 40-year-old patient classically presented with recurrent hematuria. The small pyelic tumour was clearly delineated by msCT urography obtained during compression of the uretera with rubber balloons classically used during IVP In the absence of a definite histological diagnosis--pyeloscopy being unsuccessful--the patient underwent radical nephrectomy.

Characterization of an original model of myocardial infarction provoked by coronary artery thrombosis induced by ferric chloride in pig.

Background: Great advances have been made in the prevention of thrombotic disorders by developments of new pharmacological and surgical treatments. Animal models of arterial thrombosis have largely contributed to the discovery and to the validation of original treatments. The purpose of the present work was to develop and validate an original model of acute myocardial infarction provoked in pig by thrombosis of the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery induced by topical application of ferric chloride solution.

Evaluation of extensive initial staging procedure in intermediate/high-risk melanoma patients.

Introduction: Early diagnosis and treatment of metastases have been shown to improve overall survival of melanoma patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of extensive initial staging, including positron emission tomography (PET) scan on the management of melanoma patients.

Patients And Methods: Forty-three patients with intermediate/poor prognosis primary melanoma benefited from complementary excision and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLB) after clinical and paraclinical staging (computed tomography, nuclear magnetic resonance and whole body fluorodeoxyglucose PET scan).

Expression of galectin-3 in primary and metastatic melanoma: immunohistochemical studies on human lesions and nude mice xenograft tumors.

Galectins are a large family of proteins which bind galactoside-containing glycans. Their role in cancer seems to be important since members of the family may mediate cell adhesion and modulate cell growth. Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is expressed in the nucleus, in the cytoplasm and on the cell surface, and can also be secreted into the extracellular matrix.
