Choanal atresia is a rare congenital anomaly in humans and animals, characterized by the absence of communication of one or both nasal cavities with the nasopharynx. The severity of clinical signs depends on the presence of unilateral versus bilateral stenosis as well as comorbidities. With bilateral atresia, respiration may be severely compromised particularly during sleep, as airflow can only occur when breathing through the open mouth.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the effectiveness of using three-dimensional (3D) ultrasonography compared to traditional two-dimensional (2D) measurements for predicting the timing of dog births (parturition) as pregnancy progresses.
  • A total of 32 examinations were conducted on 25 pregnant bitches, measuring the inner chorionic cavity (ICC) using both 2D and 3D techniques, while also tracking progesterone levels to estimate ovulation dates.
  • Results showed that while 3D volume measurements had a similar accuracy to 2D measurements, they did not significantly improve gestational aging predictions, indicating 2D ICC diameter remains a reliable method despite challenges in obtaining 3D data.
