There is strong evidence that hippocampal memory returns to a labile state upon reactivation, initiating a reconsolidation process that restabilizes it and allows for its updating. Normal aging is associated with deficits in episodic memory processes. However, the effects of aging on memory reconsolidation and its neural substrate remain largely unknown, and an animal model is lacking.

Analysis of two imported cases of yellow fever infection from Ivory Coast and The Gambia to Germany and Belgium.

Background: Yellow fever remains one of the great burdens for public health in the endemic regions in Africa and South America. The under reporting of yellow fever cases in the respective regions and lack of international interest leads to an underestimation of the constant danger in these areas. [Bodyweight in inpatients with schizophrenia].

Objective: Epidemiological studies show overweight to be a major health problem in Germany. There is some evidence that psychiatric patients often are overweight. In view of the high frequency of weight gain during the treatment with neuroleptics, particularly atypicals, in this study the bodyweight of schizophrenics should be examined.

Overexpression of the embryonic-lethal abnormal vision-like protein HuR in ovarian carcinoma is a prognostic factor and is associated with increased cyclooxygenase 2 expression.

The human embryonic-lethal abnormal vision-like protein HuR is involved in the regulation of mRNA turnover and serves as a shuttling protein between the nucleus and the cytoplasm that stabilizes mRNAs containing adenine- and uridine-rich elements in their 3' untranslated region. We have shown recently that expression of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 is related to poor prognosis in ovarian carcinoma. Other studies have shown that the COX-2 mRNA contains an adenine- and uridine-rich element and is stabilized by HuR.

Induction of apoptosis in the centre of multicellular tumour spheroids of colorectal adenocarcinomas--involvement of CD95 pathway and differentiation.

Multicellular tumour spheroids (MCTS) are three-dimensional cell culture systems which are widely used in cancer research. They are characterized by an outer zone of proliferating cells, an inner region of differentiating quiescent cells and an area of so-called necrotic cell death in their centre. The exact cause of this cell death, a controversy for many years, was the aim of the present study.

Elevated expression of cyclooxygenase-2 is a negative prognostic factor for disease free survival and overall survival in patients with breast carcinoma.

Background: Cyclooxygenases regulate the production of prostaglandins and play a role in tumor development and progression. The authors investigated the prognostic impact of expression of the cyclooxygenase (COX) isoforms, COX-1 and COX-2, on disease-free survival and progression-free survival in patients with primary breast carcinoma as well as the association between COX expression and other clinicopathologic parameters.

Methods: In this study COX isoform expression was determined by immunohistochemistry in a cohort of 221 patients with primary breast carcinoma.

Expression of mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphatase-1 (MKP-1) in primary human ovarian carcinoma.

The mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphatase-1, MKP-1 (CL100) is involved in inactivation of MAP-kinase pathways, regulation of stress-responses and suppression of apoptosis. We investigated expression of MKP-1 in 90 cases of primary ovarian tumors, 11 normal ovaries as well as 4 ovarian carcinoma cell lines. Immunohistochemical expression of MKP-1 protein was reduced in tissue from LMP tumors and invasive ovarian carcinomas compared to normal ovaries and cystadenomas.

Expression of cyclooxygenase 2 is an independent prognostic factor in human ovarian carcinoma.

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is the rate-limiting enzyme in prostanoid biosynthesis and is involved in tumor progression. We investigated expression of COX-1 and COX-2 in cell lines and tumors from ovarian carcinomas. Expression of COX-2 mRNA and protein was detectable in three of five ovarian carcinoma cell lines and was inducible by interleukin-1beta or phorbolester in a subset of cell lines.

Cardiac death after autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) for treatment of systemic sclerosis (SSc): no evidence for cyclophosphamide-induced cardiomyopathy.

In patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) treatment-related mortality after autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) appears to be increased as compared to patients with hematological malignancies. In our phase I/II study on ASCT in autoimmune diseases a patient with SSc died on day 2 after ASCT. Here we report the results of the autopsy which revealed advanced pulmonary and cardiac fibrosis as the most probable cause of death.

In vivo reversibility of multidrug resistance by the MDR-modulator dexniguldipine (niguldipine derivative B859-35) and by verapamil.

The newly synthesized dihydropyridine derivative B859-35 was previously shown in vitro to be highly effective in reversing multidrug resistance (MDR) of P-glycoprotein positive tumor cell lines, such as the adriamycin (ADR) resistant erythroleukemia F4-6RADR cells. In the current study B859-35 was investigated for its efficiency in reversing MDR in an in vivo tumor model for preclinical testing of MDR-modulators. F4-6RADR cells were injected into the right flank of nude mice while the parent cells were injected into the left flank.

[Autoimmunity factor in chronic gastritis: incidence of antiparietal cell antibodies and their relation to antral histology and basal blood gastrins].

In 118 patients with histological proven chronic gastritis, was performed a study of seric antibodies against parietal cells (ACCP), following the indirect inmuno-fluorescence method. The results were positives in 36 cases (30%). Four positives cases were found in 40 normal controls (10%), two of them were compensated diabetics, one have the thyrohyoid Hashimoto's disease, and the remainder, brother of a patient with chronic gastritis, was a positive ACCP.
