The human embryonic-lethal abnormal vision-like protein HuR is involved in the regulation of mRNA turnover and serves as a shuttling protein between the nucleus and the cytoplasm that stabilizes mRNAs containing adenine- and uridine-rich elements in their 3' untranslated region. We have shown recently that expression of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 is related to poor prognosis in ovarian carcinoma. Other studies have shown that the COX-2 mRNA contains an adenine- and uridine-rich element and is stabilized by HuR.

Background: Cyclooxygenases regulate the production of prostaglandins and play a role in tumor development and progression. The authors investigated the prognostic impact of expression of the cyclooxygenase (COX) isoforms, COX-1 and COX-2, on disease-free survival and progression-free survival in patients with primary breast carcinoma as well as the association between COX expression and other clinicopathologic parameters.

The mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphatase-1, MKP-1 (CL100) is involved in inactivation of MAP-kinase pathways, regulation of stress-responses and suppression of apoptosis. We investigated expression of MKP-1 in 90 cases of primary ovarian tumors, 11 normal ovaries as well as 4 ovarian carcinoma cell lines. Immunohistochemical expression of MKP-1 protein was reduced in tissue from LMP tumors and invasive ovarian carcinomas compared to normal ovaries and cystadenomas.

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is the rate-limiting enzyme in prostanoid biosynthesis and is involved in tumor progression. We investigated expression of COX-1 and COX-2 in cell lines and tumors from ovarian carcinomas. Expression of COX-2 mRNA and protein was detectable in three of five ovarian carcinoma cell lines and was inducible by interleukin-1beta or phorbolester in a subset of cell lines.

In patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) treatment-related mortality after autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) appears to be increased as compared to patients with hematological malignancies. In our phase I/II study on ASCT in autoimmune diseases a patient with SSc died on day 2 after ASCT. Here we report the results of the autopsy which revealed advanced pulmonary and cardiac fibrosis as the most probable cause of death.

The newly synthesized dihydropyridine derivative B859-35 was previously shown in vitro to be highly effective in reversing multidrug resistance (MDR) of P-glycoprotein positive tumor cell lines, such as the adriamycin (ADR) resistant erythroleukemia F4-6RADR cells. In the current study B859-35 was investigated for its efficiency in reversing MDR in an in vivo tumor model for preclinical testing of MDR-modulators. F4-6RADR cells were injected into the right flank of nude mice while the parent cells were injected into the left flank.

In 118 patients with histological proven chronic gastritis, was performed a study of seric antibodies against parietal cells (ACCP), following the indirect inmuno-fluorescence method. The results were positives in 36 cases (30%). Four positives cases were found in 40 normal controls (10%), two of them were compensated diabetics, one have the thyrohyoid Hashimoto's disease, and the remainder, brother of a patient with chronic gastritis, was a positive ACCP.
