Male Syrian golden hamsters were given 15 weekly intratracheal instillations with suspensions of coal fly ash or oil fly ash. Controls were instilled with saline containing gelatine (0.5 g/100 mL) or to check particle effects with suspensions of hematite (Fe2O3).

Blood and plasma viscosity was measured in eight patients with typical effort-induced angina pectoris who did not have coronary artery stenosis at angiography. The same variables were studied in 14 patients with angina pectoris and verified coronary artery disease that in most cases was extensive. Both groups of patients had significantly higher viscosity values in whole blood, at natural hematocrit as well as standardized hematocrit (45%), than 25 healthy subjects serving as a reference group.

The type, differentiation and histogenesis of the tumor cells of alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) have been analyzed in a series of ten cases by a light-microscopic, ultrastructural, immunohistochemical and cytologic investigation and quantitative DNA analysis. Four tumors deviated from ordinary ASPS: three were wholly or partly of the so-called pleomorphic variant of ASPS and a fourth tumor showed calcifications of the psammoma body type. The ultrastructural findings and immunohistochemical demonstration of desmin supported the hypothesis of a rhabdomyomatous differentiation and gave no support to epithelial (negative immunoreactions for cytokeratins, epithelial membrane antigen, HMFG-1 and -2, tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA] or neuroectodermal (negative for S-100 protein, glial fibrillary acidic protein, neurofilaments) differentiation.

The present report is a light- and electron-microscopic and immunohistochemical study of 7 cases of epithelioid sarcoma. Formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded material and in one case ethanol-fixed material from the tumors as well as control tissues were used for the immunohistochemical analysis. A positive reaction for cytokeratins was observed in all 7 tumors when using 3 different polyclonal antibodies and 1 of 3 monoclonal antibodies.

A nephrotoxic substance has been isolated from Cortinarius speciosissimus. The 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR mass spectra indicated the chemical structure to be 3,3',4,4'-tetrahydroxy-2,2'-bipyridine-N-N'-dioxide. The toxin was quantitated using reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with electrochemical detection.

In order to detect deep vein thrombosis (DVT), 101 patients with acute medical or infectious disorders were examined with the 125I-fibrinogen uptake test. All patients were bedridden on admission and were scanned daily from the second to the eighth day. Thirteen patients developed a positive fibrinogen uptake test.

An exceptional case of water-clear cell hyperplasia (WCCH) of the parathyroid glands is presented. Parathyroid tissue was excised at three operations during a period of twenty years before the patient eventually became normocalcemic. Microscopic evaluation of the parathyroids from the first operation showed typical WCCH-findings.

Fifteen patients with hypertrophic (HCM) and 15 with dilative cardiomyopathy (DCM) were examined with radionuclide angiography and M-mode echocardiography to evaluate the combination of two noninvasive methods for measuring left ventricular performance. The patients with HCM had delayed myocardial relaxation and rapid filling time with preserved peak rate of early ventricular filling. DCM patients, on the contrary, had low values of left ventricular systolic performance and low peak filling rate.

The hemodynamic situation in congestive heart failure (CHF) is greatly influenced by compensatory mechanisms within the heart itself as well as released from the central nervous system and from the kidneys. These measures are intended to maintain the cardiac output at a level as beneficial as possible and to distribute the blood flow to regions with the largest metabolic demands. Thus the hemodynamic consequences of CHF are reflected in the central circulation as well as in the periphery.

In rats treated with sodium cyanide (5-20 mg/kg, ip) dopamine was dose dependently decreased in the striatum within 60 sec. One of the main metabolites of dopamine in the central nervous system, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (HVA), was decreased in striatum, olfactory tubercle, and hippocampus. However, the oxidatively deaminated metabolite, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), was not significantly altered in any of the brain regions studied.

The skeletal muscle metabolism of horses with a wide range of cardiocirculatory capacities was studied during a standardised near-maximal exercise test in relation to muscle fibre composition. Although the same amount of work was performed by all horses the amount of triglycerides and glycogen utilised and lactate accumulated differed widely. Both blood and muscle lactate accumulation were positively related to the amount of glycogen utilised.

Adrenergic nerves reach the ovary via two routes: along the arteries to the ovary and via the suspensory ligament. Results from earlier investigations suggest that denervation of the nerves along the arteries does not influence the ovulatory process. In the present study we have examined whether denervation by transection of the ovarian suspensory ligament influences the ovulatory process.

In a placebo-controlled trial 62 patients with chronic congestive heart failure (CHF) (New York Heart Association class III) had hydralazine (149 +/- 11 mg daily) or placebo added to conventional therapy. During 12 months' follow-up 27 patients dropped out, 15 of 32 in the hydralazine group and 12 of 30 among the control subjects. The 1-year mortality rate was 28% in the hydralazine group compared to 27% in the control group.

An asymptomatic population of 100 women and 101 men was studied with M-mode echocardiogram to determine the prevalence of mitral valve prolapse (MVP). One of the two patterns characteristic for MVP was found in 8% of the females and 7% of the males. The diastolic mitral valve excursion was significantly higher in the MVP group (p less than or equal to 0.

Accumulation in the rat striatum of 3,4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine (DOPA) after inhibition of the neuronal decarboxylase was not significantly altered in the early abstinence after chronic treatment with barbital for 36-39 weeks in comparison with controls treated with water. Pilocarpine (10 mg/kg i.p.

Potassium supplements or potassium-sparing agents.

Acta Pharmacol Toxicol (Copenh)

May 1984

During diuretic treatment alterations in myocardial cellular excitability due to potassium-induced disturbances of the membrane potential may arise without obvious changes of total body K. This may be explained by coexisting disturbances of the acid/base balance and other ions such as magnesium, two factors which independently influence the transport of potassium across the cell membrane. The consequence may be cardiac arrhythmias, particularly in the presence of digitalis.

Emission samples were obtained from two medium-sized power plants, one fired with oil and the other with pulverized coal. Particles obtained by a miniscale plume stack gas sampler (MIPSGAS), simulating the dilution process in the plume, were subjected to detailed physical, chemical and biological characterization. Studies by scanning electron microscopy and by Coulter counter demonstrated that the particles from the oil-fired boiler were considerably larger than the particles from the coal-fired boiler.
