Background: Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus is an important cause of neurological disease in Asia. JE vaccine is recommended for travelers with higher JE risk itineraries. Inactivated Vero cell culture-derived JE vaccine (JE-VC) is the only JE vaccine currently available in the United States.

Article Synopsis
  • The demand for effective biomarkers in surgical vascular disease is rising, particularly for preoperative risk assessment, with the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) emerging as a strong candidate.
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of 14 studies involving 5,652 patients found that elevated NLR is linked to increased short-term and long-term mortality risk after vascular surgery.
  • Despite its potential as a simple and accessible prognostic tool, variations in patient demographics and surgical types make direct comparisons across studies difficult, indicating a need for further investigation into NLR's effectiveness.

Camptothecins are potent topoisomerase I inhibitors used to treat high-risk pediatric solid tumors, but they often show poor efficacy due to intrinsic or acquired chemoresistance. Here, we developed a multivalent, polymer-based prodrug of a structurally optimized camptothecin (SN22) designed to overcome key chemoresistance mechanisms. The ability of SN22 vs.

Intensive care nursing is prone to episodic anxiety linked to patients' immediate needs for treatment. Balancing biomedical interventions with compassionate patient-centred nursing can be particularly anxiety provoking. These patterns of anxiety may impact compassion and patient-centred nursing.

Background: Adolescence and young adulthood can be a period of significant and unique life changes in which competing demands and challenges distract from disease self-management. Specific challenges related to the way individual services are configured can also limit the support available. This paper presents a discussion of healthcare service support for adolescents and young adults, using type 1 diabetes as an exemplar.

In the wake of COVID-19, the capacity to track emerging trends in mental health symptoms and needs will guide public health responses at multiple ecological levels. Using Google Trends to track population-level mental health-related Google searches in the United States, this investigation identified pandemic-associated spikes in searches related to anxiety symptoms and remote treatments for anxiety, such as deep breathing and body scan meditation. As other discernable population-level changes in mental health have yet to emerge, continued surveillance is warranted.

Purpose: To determine the frequency and characteristics of safety advisories issued by medicines regulatory agencies in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US).

Methods: This retrospective analysis examines medicines safety warnings issued by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Health Canada (HC), the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) from January 1, 2007 until December 31, 2016. A database of warnings obtained from regulators' websites was developed and warnings were classified by communication type, drug, or therapeutic class focus, and the risk discussed.

Objective The aim of this study was to determine, in the first 2 years after the last planned appointment with paediatric diabetes services for young people with Type 1 diabetes (T1D): (1) the number of planned and unplanned healthcare contacts and HbA1c measurements made; (2) factors linked to diabetes-related service use; and (3) factors predictive of the number of planned and unplanned service contacts, and of meeting the minimum number of planned service contacts. Methods Healthcare records of a major public healthcare provider in Australia were audited for preventive and acute service use by young people with T1D transferring from paediatric to adult public healthcare services. Statistical analyses included use of t-tests and logistic regression modelling.

Purpose: To examine whether adults with cancer view affective forecasting as important for treatment decisions, and to examine these perceptions among key subgroups.

Design: Adults with cancer ( = 376) completed a cross-sectional survey that included demographic and clinical characteristics, the IPIP five-factor personality measure, and a rating of the perceived importance of affective forecasting for cancer treatment decisions. Descriptive statistics characterized the importance of affective forecasting.

Background: The ERG oncogene, a member of the ETS family of transcription factor encoding genes, is a genetic driver of prostate cancer. It is activated through a fusion with the androgen-responsive TMPRSS2 promoter in 50% of cases. There is therefore significant interest in developing novel therapeutic agents that target ERG.

Conflict between people and carnivores can lead to the widespread killing of predators in retaliation for livestock loss and is a major threat to predator populations. In Kenya, a large, rural, pastoralist population comes into regular conflict with predators, which persist across southern Kenya. We explored the social and psychological backdrop to livestock management practices in this area in a process designed to be easy to use and suitable for use across large areas for the study of conflict and transboundary implementation of wildlife conflict reduction measures, focusing on community involvement and needs.

Article Synopsis
  • - Palliative care in oncology is increasingly used to enhance patients' physical and mental quality of life during serious illnesses, especially cancer, supported by growing evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
  • - A review of 4 meta-analyses found that patients receiving palliative care generally reported better quality of life, with mixed results on survival benefits; some showed increased survival while others did not.
  • - The findings advocate for greater awareness among clinicians, patients, and caregivers about the benefits of palliative care, and suggest that policies should be aimed at improving access to these services.

Background: The prognostic value of asymptomatic perioperative troponin rise in vascular surgery is unclear. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the significance of clinical and subclinical troponin elevation after vascular surgery.

Methods: We searched MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), and the Cochrane Library, without language restriction, from inception to May 2019 and included studies that reported associations between elevated postoperative troponin and short-term mortality, major adverse cardiac events (MACEs), or long-term mortality in a vascular surgery cohort.

The macroscopic mechanical behavior of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) during photodegradation is characterized by decreases of tensile elongation-at-failure. An apparent linear relation between the elongation-at-failure and the molar mass indicates that the decrease of the elongation of HDPE over time is highly dependent on the decrease of the average molar mass. Possible preferential scission of the high molar mass chains was observed for HDPE exposed to ultraviolet (UV) irradiance higher than 40% (61 W/m) of the full intensity at 50 °C.

Background: Given the prevalence of gait dysfunction following stroke, walking recovery is a primary goal of rehabilitation. However, current gait rehabilitation approaches fail to demonstrate consistent benefits. Gait asymmetry, prevalent among stroke survivors who regain the ability to walk, is associated with an increased energy cost of walking and is a significant predictor of falls post-stroke.

Background: The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an emerging inflammatory perioperative biomarker which has been studied to predict the incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) after cardiac surgery. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the prognostic accuracy of elevated perioperative NLR in predicting POAF after cardiac surgery.

Methods: Multiple databases were searched from inception to May 2019 for prognostic studies on perioperative NLR and POAF following cardiac surgery.

Long-term literacy outcomes for children with hearing loss, particularly those with severe-to-profound deafness who are fitted with cochlear implants (CIs) lag behind those of children with normal hearing (NH). The causes for these long-term deficits are not fully clear, though differences in auditory access between children who use CIs and those with NH may be a partial cause. This paper briefly reviews the emergent literacy model as proposed by Whitehurst and Lonigan (1998).
