Community assembly is the process by which local communities are organized and maintained from the regional species pool. Understanding processes of insect assembly are of interest in "shrinking" cities where vacant land has become abundant as a result of protracted economic decline and population loss. Vacant land represents a viable conservation space for insects such as beetles that contribute to ecosystem services including pest suppression, decomposition, and nutrient cycling.

Comparative analysis of 23 synovial fluid biomarkers for hip and knee periprosthetic joint infection detection.

There is interest in novel synovial fluid biomarkers for the detection of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). Here, we assessed the diagnostic accuracy of 23 simple or sophisticated synovial fluid biomarkers for periprosthetic hip or knee infection detection. One hundred seven subjects were studied, 57 of whom had aseptic failure (AF) and 50 PJI.

Excellent two-year survivorship of 3D-printed metaphyseal cones in revision total knee arthroplasty.

Aims: Metaphyseal fixation during revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is important, but potentially difficult when using historical designs of cone. Material and manufacturing innovations have improved the size and shape of the cones which are available, and simplified the required bone preparation. In a large series, we assessed the implant survivorship, radiological results, and clinical outcomes of new porous 3D-printed titanium metaphyseal cones featuring a reamer-based system.

End-of-life (EOL) HIV cure-related research provides a novel approach to studying HIV reservoirs. The Last Gift is a rapid autopsy research study at the University of California San Diego that enrolls terminally ill people living with HIV (PLWHIV) with a desire to contribute to HIV cure-related research. We conducted in-depth baseline and follow-up interviews with Last Gift study participants.

Perceptions of Next-of-Kin/Loved Ones About Last Gift Rapid Research Autopsy Study Enrolling People with HIV/AIDS at the End of Life: A Qualitative Interview Study.

A growing number of people living with HIV/AIDS are participating in HIV cure-related research at the end of life (EOL). Due to the novelty of EOL HIV cure-related research, there is a need to understand how their next-of-kin (NOK) perceive such research. We conducted in-depth interviews with NOK of the Last Gift study participants at the University of California, San Diego.

BMP signaling plays a role in anterior-neural/head development, but not organizer activity, in the gastropod Crepidula fornicata.

BMP signaling is involved in many aspects of metazoan development, with two of the most conserved functions being to pattern the dorsal-ventral axis and to specify neural versus epidermal fates. An active area of research within developmental biology asks how BMP signaling was modified over evolution to build disparate body plans. Animals belonging to the superclade Spiralia/Lophotrochozoa are excellent experimental subjects for studying the evolution of BMP signaling because a highly conserved, stereotyped early cleavage program precedes the emergence of distinct body plans.

An automated aquatic rack system for rearing marine invertebrates.

Background: One hundred years ago, marine organisms were the dominant systems for the study of developmental biology. The challenges in rearing these organisms outside of a marine setting ultimately contributed to a shift towards work on a smaller number of so-called model systems. Those animals are typically non-marine organisms with advantages afforded by short life cycles, high fecundity, and relative ease in laboratory culture.

Achievable pin spanning angulation in anterosuperior pelvic external fixation.

Introduction: Pelvic external fixation using anterosuperior pins provides a quick method of stabilization without necessitating fluoroscopic guidance. Various locations, depths, and inclinations have been cited for external fixator pins; however, the existing literature lacks clear indications for the angular difference between pins. Thus, we aimed to determine the greatest degree of sagittal pin spanning angulation (SPSA) between two iliac crest pins and how intraosseous depth (ID) affects these angulations.

Perceptions of the feedback process: a case study of veterinary residents and supervisors.

Background: Appraisal of resident clinical performance is critical during training. The most common method for this is feedback to residents based on impressions of supervising clinicians. How effective these practices are for veterinary residents remains unknown.

Perineural invasion predicts for locoregional failure in patients with oesophageal adenocarcinoma treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy.

Aim: The prognostic significance of perineural invasion (PNI) in oesophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) is unclear. We examined the association of PNI with clinical outcomes in patients treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) and surgery.

Background: Lymphedema is characterized by fluid buildup and swelling, leading to skin fibrosis and recurring soft-tissue infections. There is a paucity of data examining the impact of lymphedema in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The purpose of this study was to review the outcomes of TKA in patients with lymphedema compared with a matched cohort with primary osteoarthritis.

Varus-valgus constraint in 416 revision total knee arthroplasties with cemented stems provides a reliable reconstruction with a low subsequent revision rate at early to mid-term review.

Aims: Varus-valgus constrained (VVC) implants are often used during revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to gain coronal plane stability. However, the increased mechanical torque applied to the bone-cement interface theoretically increases the risk of aseptic loosening. We assessed mid-term survivorship, complications, and clinical outcomes of a fixed-bearing VVC device in revision TKAs.

A systematic review and network meta-analysis of adjuvant therapy for curatively resected biliary tract cancers.

Background: Recent randomized controlled trials (rcts) have contributed high-quality data about adjuvant therapy in curatively resected biliary tract cancer (btc); however, a standard approach to treating those patients still has not been developed.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review of published studies and abstracts up to and including June 2018, choosing rcts involving patients with btc receiving adjuvant chemotherapy after complete surgical resection. Network meta-analysis methods were used for indirect comparisons of overall survival (os) and relapse-free survival (rfs) for various adjuvant therapies.

Cranial fasciitis is an uncommon benign fibroblastic tumor, generally histologically identical to nodular fasciitis. It develops almost exclusively in children. Cranial fasciitis manifests clinically as a painless rapidly growing solitary nodule in the head and neck area, frequently eroding the underlying bone.

Accessing surgical care for esophageal cancer: patient travel patterns to reach higher volume center.

While better outcomes at high-volume surgical centers have driven the regionalization of complex surgical care, access to high-volume centers often requires travel over longer distances. We sought to evaluate the travel patterns among patients undergoing esophagectomy to assess willingness of patients to travel for surgical care. The California Office of Statewide Health Planning database was used to identify patients who underwent esophagectomy between 2005 and 2016.

Hierarchical interactions and co-regulation among regulators are commonly observed in biological systems, leading to complex regulatory networks. Small RNA (sRNAs) have been shown to be important regulators of gene expression due to their involvement in multiple cellular processes.

Caregiver Quality of Life Before and After Cytoreductive Surgery and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy.

Background: Cytoreductive surgery plus intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy (CRS+HIPEC) is a formidable procedure, often affecting the quality of life (QOL) of the caregiver as well as the patient. We explored the impact of quality of life and depressive symptom burdens of CRS+HIPEC caregivers prospectively.

Study Design: Patient and caregiver dyads were both consented per IRB-approved protocol; CRS ± HIPEC was performed.

Prognostic Molecular Classification of Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasms Treated with Cytoreductive Surgery and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy.

Background: Appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (AMN) with peritoneal metastasis is a rare but deadly disease with few prognostic or therapy-predictive biomarkers to guide treatment decisions. Here, we investigated the prognostic and biological attributes of gene expression-based AMN molecular subtypes.

Methods: AMN specimens (n = 138) derived from a population-based subseries of patients treated at our institution with cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) between 05/2000 and 05/2013 were analyzed for gene expression using a custom-designed NanoString 148-gene panel.

Adjuvant treatment for resected pancreatic adenocarcinoma: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.

Adjuvant chemotherapy has significantly improved outcomes following surgical resection for pancreatic adenocarcinoma; however, the optimal adjuvant strategy remains unclear. This systematic review and network meta-analysis was conducted to provide indirect comparative evidence across adjuvant chemotherapies. Electronic searches of EMBASE, MEDLINE, Cochrane and ASCO databases were conducted to identify eligible randomized controlled trials (RCT).

Technology-Based Psychosocial Intervention to Improve Quality of Life and Reduce Symptom Burden in Men with Advanced Prostate Cancer: Results from a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Men with advanced prostate cancer (APC) face multiple challenges including poor prognosis, poor health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and elevated symptom burden. This study sought to establish the efficacy of a tablet-delivered, group-based psychosocial intervention for improving HRQOL and reducing symptom burden in men with APC. We hypothesized that men randomized to cognitive-behavioral stress management (CBSM) would report improved HRQOL and reduced symptom burden relative to men randomized to an active control health promotion (HP) condition.

Contemporary Total Hip and Total Knee Arthroplasty Results in Patients with Hemochromatosis.

Background: Hemochromatosis can result in metabolic bone pathology (due to excessive iron absorption) and degenerative joint disease, leading to total joint arthroplasties. The aim of this study is to analyze the survivorship, complications, radiographic results, and clinical outcomes of patients with hemochromatosis who received either a total hip arthroplasty (THA) or a total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

Methods: We identified 34 lower extremity arthroplasties in 29 patients with hemochromatosis performed between 2000 and 2016.
