To increase the power to detect rare variants, we use two methods to collapse rare variants and compare the results with those from the uncollapsed data.

Although research supports the stigma and labeling perspective, empirical evidence also indicates that a social safety net remains intact for those with mental illness, recalling the classic "sick role" concept. Here, insights from social networks theory are offered as explanation for these discrepant findings. Using data from individuals experiencing their first contact with the mental health treatment system, the effects of diagnosis and symptoms on social networks and stigma experiences are examined.

Influence of standing estrus before an injection of GnRH during a beef cattle fixed-time AI protocol on LH release, subsequent concentrations of progesterone, and steriodogenic enzyme expression.

Beef cows that exhibit estrus before fixed-time AI have been reported to have increased pregnancy success and increased concentrations of progesterone during the subsequent estrous cycle. Therefore, these experiments were conducted to evaluate if initiation of standing estrus before an injection of GnRH during a fixed-time AI protocol affected LH pulses, subsequent concentrations of progesterone, and luteal steroidogenic enzyme expression. In Experiments 1 and 2, cows were treated with the CO-Synch protocol (100 μg GnRH day -9, 25 mg PGF(2α) day -2, and 100 μg GnRH day 0) and allotted to one of two treatments: 1) cows that initiated estrus before GnRH on day 0 (estrus; n = 5) or 2) cows that did not initiate estrus and were induced to ovulate by the GnRH on day 0 (no estrus; n = 5).

Influence of inducing luteal regression before a modified fixed-time artificial insemination protocol in postpartum beef cows on pregnancy success.

Most fixed-time insemination protocols utilize an injection of GnRH at the beginning of the protocol to initiate a new follicular wave. However, the ability of GnRH to initiate a new follicular wave is dependent on the stage of the estrous cycle. We hypothesized that administering PGF(2α) 3 d before initiating a fixed-time AI protocol would improve synchrony of follicular waves and result in greater pregnancy success.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of acute vibration therapy (VT) on performance recovery after a bout of strenuous eccentric exercise. Eight healthy males completed 300 maximal eccentric contractions of the quadriceps of one leg on an isokinetic dynamometer. Immediately after exercise and 12 and 24 h post-exercise, the subjects underwent either VT or a control treatment of no VT.

Neonothopanus gardneri: a new combination for a bioluminescent agaric from Brazil.

The bioluminescent agaric, Agaricus gardneri Berk., was rediscovered recently in central Brazil. The new combination, Neonothopanus gardneri, is proposed for this long-forgotten taxon supported by morphological and molecular data.

To identify gene loci associated with steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS), we utilized homozygosity mapping and exome sequencing in a consanguineous pedigree with three affected siblings. High-density genotyping identified three segments of homozygosity spanning 33.6 Mb on chromosomes 5, 10, and 15 containing 296 candidate genes.

Current drivers and future directions of global livestock disease dynamics.

We review the global dynamics of livestock disease over the last two decades. Our imperfect ability to detect and report disease hinders assessment of trends, but we suggest that, although endemic diseases continue their historic decline in wealthy countries, poor countries experience static or deteriorating animal health and epidemic diseases show both regression and expansion. At a mesolevel, disease is changing in terms of space and host, which is illustrated by bluetongue, Lyme disease, and West Nile virus, and it is also emerging, as illustrated by highly pathogenic avian influenza and others.

Family caregivers' compassion fatigue in long-term facilities.

Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the presence of compassion fatigue in family carers who assist staff with care of older relatives in long-term settings.

Method: Narrative data were collected through observation and conversations with five purposively selected family carers.

Findings: Thematic and poetic analysis suggest that family carers exhibit symptoms associated in the literature with compassion fatigue in nurses and other healthcare professionals.
