Pancreatic cancer (PDAC) is one of the most aggressive solid tumors and is showing increasing incidence. The aim of our review is to provide practical help for all clinical oncologists and to summarize the current management of PDAC using a simple "ABC method" (A-anatomical resectability, B-biological resectability and C-clinical conditions). For anatomically resectable PDAC without any high-risk factors (biological or conditional), the actual standard of care is represented by surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy.

Remediation of water contaminated with oxyanions is of great importance due to the toxicity and environmental persistence of these chemical species. The present work describes the elimination of different oxyanions in water using catalysts supported on active carbon obtained from an agricultural residue (peanut shells, C) and active commercial carbon (C) in order to compare their structural and catalytic properties. The synthesized C and C were fully characterized by surface analysis, TGA, TPR, SEM-EDX, FT-IR, and TEM.

Background: Alpha-1-Antitrypsin (AAT) is one of the major plasmatic protease inhibitors. In the last decade, an association between Alpha-1-Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD) and Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) has been hypothesized. Multiple factors may be involved in AAA's etiopathogenesis, and an underlying structural defect of the extracellular matrix (ECM) is always present.

Recently, the assisted bidirectional Glenn (ABG) procedure has been proposed as an alternative to the modified Blalock-Taussig shunt (mBTS) operation for neonates with single-ventricle physiology. Despite success in reducing heart workload and maintaining sufficient pulmonary flow, the ABG also raised the superior vena cava (SVC) pressure to a level that may not be tolerated by infants. To lower the SVC pressure, we propose a modified version of the ABG (mABG), in which a shunt with a slit-shaped nozzle exit is inserted at the junction of the right and left brachiocephalic veins.

Article Synopsis
  • Ocular proton therapy (OPT) is a treatment for a type of eye cancer called uveal melanoma and has been very successful over the years.
  • In a study, doctors compared how eye tumors look on a special MRI scan versus a simpler model used in treatment planning called EyePlan.
  • They found that the MRI sometimes missed parts of the tumors, which could lead to less effective treatment, so it's important to use all available imaging tools for better results.

Catalysts prepared on ZrO, AlO and ZrO-AlO (ZrAl-10) supported with Anderson heteropolyanion (RhMo) as active phase were investigated for the elimination of NO from water. Raman characterization of pure and supported RhMo phase showed the presence of polymolybdic species of different degrees of complexity when RhMo was supported. The temperature-programmed reduction study revealed the synergic effect between Rh and Mo species, through which the reducibility of Mo was promoted by Rh, and different phase/support interactions were verified.

High precision conformal radiotherapy requires sophisticated imaging techniques to aid in target localisation for planning and treatment, particularly when organ motion due to respiration is involved. X-ray based imaging is a well-established standard for radiotherapy treatments. Over the last few years, the ability of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to provide radiation-free images with high-resolution and superb soft tissue contrast has highlighted the potential of this imaging modality for radiotherapy treatment planning and motion management.

Background: Motion monitoring is essential when treating non-static tumours with pencil beam scanned protons. 4D medical imaging typically relies on the detected body surface displacement, considered as a surrogate of the patient's anatomical changes, a concept similarly applied by most motion mitigation techniques. In this study, we investigate benefits and pitfalls of optical and electromagnetic tracking, key technologies for non-invasive surface motion monitoring, in the specific environment of image-guided, gantry-based proton therapy.

Motion-induced range changes and incorrectly placed dose spots strongly affect the quality of pencil-beam-scanned (PBS) proton therapy, especially in thoracic tumour sites, where density changes are large. Thus motion-mitigation techniques are necessary, which must be validated in a realistic patient-like geometry. We report on the development and characterisation of a dynamic, anthropomorphic, thorax phantom that can realistically mimic thoracic motions and anatomical features for verifications of proton and photon 4D treatments.
