A Rare Case of Recurrent Renal Infarcts With Unique Etiologies in Different Kidneys Occurring Six Years Apart.

Renal infarcts are uncommon, difficult to diagnose, and can lead to long-term kidney disease. Because they have numerous etiologies and patients may present with nonspecific symptoms, renal infarcts may be mistaken for other common conditions. A 50-year-old woman presented to the emergency department (ED) with flank pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Nurse Perceptions of Barriers to Infection Prevention and Control in Labor and Delivery.

Burkholderia multivorans Infections Associated with Use of Ice and Water from Ice Machines for Patient Care Activities - Four Hospitals, California and Colorado, 2020-2024.

Ice machines can harbor water-related organisms, and the use of ice or tap water for clinical care activities has been associated with infections in health care settings. During 2021-2022, a total of 23 cases of infection by Burkholderia multivorans (sequence type ST659) were reported at two southern California hospitals and linked to contaminated ice and water from ice machines. In addition to these 23 cases, this report also includes 23 previously unreported cases of B.

CDC consultations related to ophthalmic practices and settings, January 2016-December 2023.

Consultations with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion revealed patient harms associated with ophthalmic care. Adherence to core infection prevention and control principles, tailored guidance for ophthalmic settings, and compliance with manufacturing and compounding standards could decrease adverse events and patient exposures to contaminated products.

Brown Adipose Tissue as a Unique Niche for Islet Organoid Transplantation: Insights From In Vivo Imaging.

Background: Transplantation of human-induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived islet organoids is a promising cell replacement therapy for type 1 diabetes (T1D). It is important to improve the efficacy of islet organoids transplantation by identifying new transplantation sites with high vascularization and sufficient accommodation to support graft survival with a high capacity for oxygen delivery.

Mycobacterium abscessus is an intrinsically drug-resistant, rapidly growing, nontuberculous mycobacterium; extrapulmonary infections have been reported in association with medical tourism (1). During November-December 2022, two Colorado hospitals (hospitals A and B) treated patient A, a Colorado woman aged 30-39 years, for M. abscessus meningitis.

Impact of a Mock OSCE on Student Confidence in Applying the Pharmacists' Patient Care Process.

The Medical and Pharmacy Student Collaboration (MAPSC) student organization at the University of Southern California, Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, created an extracurricular, peer-led, virtual group mock objective structured clinical examination (MOSCE) to expose first-year pharmacy students (P1s) to the Pharmacists' Patient Care Process (PPCP). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of a MAPSC MOSCE on P1s self-reported confidence in applying the PPCP and on patient communication, medication knowledge, and clinical skills.

Background: Treatment of candidemia may be complicated by hematogenous dissemination. Limited data exist to guide decision-making regarding the evaluation for disseminated disease. A knowledge gap remains when considering the welfare of invertebrates, particularly when housed in public aquaria. TripAdvisor comments were analyzed for 485 worldwide aquariums.

Phase II study of bemnifosbuvir in high-risk participants in a hospital setting with moderate COVID-19.

Background: Bemnifosbuvir, a novel, oral, nonmutagenic, nonteratogenic nucleotide analogue inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication .

Importance: Live vaccines (measles-mumps-rubella [MMR] and varicella-zoster virus [VZV]) have not been recommended after solid organ transplant due to concern for inciting vaccine strain infection in an immunocompromised host. However, the rates of measles, mumps, and varicella are rising nationally and internationally, leaving susceptible immunocompromised children at risk for life-threating conditions.

Introduction: The Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco began in the United States as a scientific organization "to stimulate the generation and dissemination of new knowledge concerning nicotine and tobacco in all its manifestations." Now in its 30th year, the Society is taking on new challenges in tobacco control, nicotine vaping, product regulation, and public policy.

The Role of Ethnic-Specific Gender Schemas in Ethnic Disparities in Adolescent Girls' Disruptive Behavior: A Preliminary Examination.

African American adolescent girls have evidenced higher levels of disruptive behavior than girls from other ethnic groups. However, most research focused on understanding disparities in these outcomes has been conducted without consideration of gender or has focused exclusively on boys. Yet, prior research suggests that anger and aggression are less gender-typed in African American youth than they are among youth from other ethnic backgrounds.
