The cycle-threshold-value (C -value) is a quantitative value of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which represents the gold standard for the detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV 2). The C -value can be used to indicate the viral load in swabs of the airways. The collection of a specimen is the only part of the testing process, which is performed manually and carries, therefore, a high potential for increasing measurement variability.

  • Wood-plastic composites (WPCs) combine waste wood and thermoplastic polymers for versatile use in design, with quality influenced by various additives and structural changes.
  • Hybrid WPC panels with different wood contents and metal grid reinforcements demonstrate significantly improved mechanical properties, especially strength and moisture absorption rates.
  • Testing reveals that samples reinforced with more metal grids show a substantial increase in energy absorption and flexural strength, making them suitable for outdoor applications.

Polymer-bonded magnets are a class of composite material that combines the magnetic properties of metal particles and the molding possibility of a polymeric matrix. This class of materials has shown huge potential for various applications in industry and engineering. Traditional research in this field has so far mainly focused on mechanical, electrical or magnetic properties of the composite, or on particle size and distribution.

Background: The wide use of mobile health apps has created new possibilities in social anxiety education and treatment. However, the content and quality of social anxiety apps have been quite unclear, which makes it difficult for people to choose appropriate apps to use on smartphones and tablets.

Objective: This study aims to identify the psychoeducational social anxiety apps in the two most popular Australian app stores, report the descriptive and technical information provided in apps exclusively for social anxiety, evaluate app quality, and identify whether any apps would be appropriate for people with social anxiety or others who know someone with social anxiety.

Introduction: Molecular testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) continues to suffer from delays and shortages. Antigen tests have recently emerged as a viable alternative to detect patients with high viral loads, associated with elevated risk of transmission. While rapid lateral flow tests greatly improved accessibility of SARS-CoV-2 detection in critical areas, their manual nature limits scalability and suitability for large-scale testing schemes.

B lymphocytes, as a central part of adaptive immune responses, have the ability to fight against an almost unlimited numbers of pathogens. Impairment of B cell development, activation and differentiation to antibody secreting plasma cells can lead to malignancy, allergy, autoimmunity and immunodeficiency. However, the impact of environmental factors, such as hyperosmolality or osmotic stress caused by varying salt concentrations in different lymphoid organs, on these processes is not well-understood.

Antibiotic containing polycaprolactone (PCL) fibers were produced by using three electrospinning methods: blend, emulsion and co-axial electrospinning (labeled as S1, S2 and S3, respectively). The profiles of drug release from three different systems were studied and antimicrobial properties of produced materials were evaluated. Morphology of the produced fibers was characterized and revealed that cefazolin-loaded PCL fibers had smaller diameter compared to neat PCL fibers, while the chemical interaction between the antibiotic and PCL showed that cefazolin neither had reacted with PCL phase, nor had degraded during the electrospinning process.

Background: Despite recent therapeutic advancements, Wilms tumour (WT) presents remarkable survival variations. We explored mortality and survival patterns for children (0-14 years) with WT in 12 Southern and Eastern European (SEE) countries in comparison with the United States of America (USA).

Methods: A total of 3966 WT cases (0-14 years) were registered by a network of SEE childhood cancer registries (N:1723) during available registration periods circa 1990-2016 and surveillance, epidemiology, and end results program (SEER) (N:2243; 1990-2012); mortality data were provided by the respective national statistical services.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study compares nephroblastoma (Wilms' tumor) incidence rates among children in 12 Southern and Eastern European countries with data from the USA, taking into account the human development index (HDI).
  • - Analyzing 1776 cases from SEE registries and 2260 from the SEER database, the overall incidence was slightly higher in SEE regions, with a significant increase only in Belarus and most cases diagnosed before age five.
  • - The findings suggest a link between higher HDI and increased nephroblastoma incidence, along with changing male-to-female ratios as children age, indicating potential environmental and genetic factors that merit further exploration.

Recent evidence from chemical analysis of tissue electrolyte and water composition has shown that body Na(+) content in experimental animals is not constant, does not always readily equilibrate with water, and cannot be exclusively controlled by the renal blood purification process. Instead, large amounts of Na(+) are stored in the skin and in skeletal muscle. Quantitative non-invasive detection of Na(+) reservoirs with sodium magnetic resonance imaging ((23)NaMRI) suggests that this mysterious Na(+) storage is not only an animal research curiosity but also exists in humans.

Psoriasis is a systematic chronic disease with large influence on patients' quality of life (QoL). The aim of this study was to assess the QoL of patients with psoriasis using generic, dermatology-specific and psoriasis-specific instruments simultaneously, to investigate the relationships between dimensions or subscales of the questionnaires and to identify categories of patients at risk of a high QoL impairment. The study comprised 100 consecutive patients with psoriasis treated at the Department of Dermatology, Clinical Center "Zvezdara", Belgrade, from January to December 2011.

Case Report: We present a case of 28-year-old female patient with condylomata gigantea (Buschke-Lowenstein tumor) in anal and perianal region with propagation on vulva and vagina. The local surgical excision and CO(2) laser treatment were performed. Histological examination showed presence of HPV type 11 without malignant potential.

In the period from March 1, 1987 until October 31, 1988, 873 seamen were examined on HIV and questioned on their state of knowledge on AIDS. A questionnaire with 7 questions on AIDS and 6 important features of the seamen was statistically evaluated. This evaluation showed the following results: 22% of all persons questioned had already had venereal diseases.
