Effectiveness of a mitigation measure for the lesser kestrel (Falco naumanni) in wind farms in Spain.

Central-eastern Spain is characterised as being a flat and relatively open landscape, greatly used for agricultural purposes and with a high density of wind installations. This landscape also hosts a large population of the lesser kestrel (Falco naumanni), one of the species most threatened by collisions with wind turbines. During a ten-year period, we analysed bird mortality by recording deaths on three wind farms (WF), Cerro del Palo, Cerro Calderón and La Muela I, located in the province of Cuenca (Spain) and containing a total of 99 turbines.

Human and ecological determinants of the spatial structure of local breed diversity.

Since domestication, a large number of livestock breeds adapted to local conditions have been created by natural and artificial selection, representing one of the most powerful ways in which human groups have constructed niches to meet their need. Although many authors have described local breeds as the result of culturally and environmentally mediated processes, this study, located in mainland Spain, is the first aimed at identifying and quantifying the environmental and human contributions to the spatial structure of local breed diversity, which we refer to as livestock niche. We found that the more similar two provinces were in terms of human population, ecological characteristics, historical ties, and geographic distance, the more similar the composition of local breeds in their territories.

Do precipitation and food affect the reproduction of brown brocket deer Mazama gouazoubira in conditions of semi-captivity?

The births of brown brocket deer ( Mazama gouazoubira) in a secondary lower montane forest called "yunga" in northwestern Argentina were compared with rainfall. Analyses were performed with rainfall and flower-fruit fall in an attempt to determine the possible importance of these seasonal variables in birthing. The births were not directly correlated with rainfall, but rather with the flower and fruit fall of exotic plant species.

Light-induced switching of the wettability of novel asymmetrical poly(vinyl alcohol)-co-ethylene membranes blended with azobenzene polymers.

Novel composite asymmetrical membranes based on poly(vinyl alcohol)-co-ethylene (EVAL) as the host material and new polyethers that contain azobenzene moieties in the side chain were prepared by dry-cast phase inversion after dissolving the azo polymers in tetrahydrofuran and EVAL in dimethylsulfoxide and subsequently mixing the resulting solutions. By taking advantage of the proper temperature variation in the oven used for solvent evaporation, asymmetrical membranes that exhibited a dense, crystalline layer on the bottom and a porous, mainly amorphous layer on the top were obtained. Remarkable changes in the surface morphology and the contact angle with water were observed on the top surfaces of the composite membranes.

Risk of introduction of H5N1 HPAI from Europe to Spain by wild water birds in autumn.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) subtype H5N1 continues to circulate across Eurasia and Africa since its unprecedented rapid spread in 2005. Diffusion by wild bird movements has been evidenced in the European Union in 2006 and 2007. Spain is an important wintering quarter for aquatic birds from northern latitudes, so identifying the critical areas and species where an outbreak is prone to happen is necessary.

Impact of cryopreservation and reactive oxygen species on DNA integrity, lipid peroxidation, and functional parameters in ram sperm.

Assisted reproduction using frozen-thawed semen has practical advantages, although cryopreservation is detrimental to sperm fertility in most mammals. We examined the influence of cryopreservation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) on ram sperm DNA stability (using SCSA), lipid peroxidation (LPO), chlortetracycline fluorescence (CTC) patterns, motility and viability. In Experiment 1, DNA integrity, LPO, CTC, motility and viability tests were performed on fresh and cryopreserved sperm after 0, 6, and 24 hr in synthetic oviductal fluid (SOF).

Changes in cisternal udder compartment induced by milking interval in dairy goats milked once or twice daily.

Fourteen Murciano-Granadina dairy goats were used to evaluate udder compartments (cisternal and alveolar) and cisternal recoil after an oxytocin (OT) challenge at different milking intervals (8, 16, and 24 h) during wk 7 of lactation. Goats were milked once (1x; n = 7) or twice (2x; n = 7) daily from wk 2 of lactation. Average milk yields for wk 4 and 8 were 1.

Cryopreservation of ram semen facilitates sperm DNA damage: relationship between sperm andrological parameters and the sperm chromatin structure assay.

We hypothesized that cryopreservation and incubation in conditions that mimic the female genital tract following insemination increases the susceptibility of ram sperm DNA to denaturation. Ram sperm samples (n = 12) underwent the sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA) and semen quality tests, including motility parameters, viability, and chlortetracycline fluorescence (CTC) patterns. We also assessed correlations between SCSA variables and semen quality parameters.

Ion-mediated resistance to osmotic changes of ram spermatozoa: the role of amiloride and ouabain.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the Na+/K+ and Na+/H+ exchange can maintain the function of fresh ram spermatozoa. We analyzed the quality parameters of spermatozoa from fresh ram ejaculates incubated in iso- (about 300 mOsm), hypo- (about 100 mOsm) and hyperosmotic (about 900 mOsm) media in the presence of ouabain a specific inhibitor of the Na+/K+ ATP-ase or amiloride, a specific inhibitor of the Na+/H+ antiporter. Ouabain increased the percentage of morphologically altered acrosomes in isoosmotic media (from about 10% to 15% in control to about 30% with 10(-4) M ouabain) and decreased the percentage of total motility (from about 80% in control to about 50% to 55% with 10(-4) M ouabain).

Tests of Large N(c) QCD from Hadronic tau Decay.

We use the ALEPH Collaboration data on vector and axial-vector spectral functions to test simple duality properties of QCD in the large N(c) limit, which emerge in the approximation of a minimal hadronic ansatz of a spectrum of narrow states. These duality properties relate the short- and long-distance behaviors of specific correlation functions, which are order parameters of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, in a way that we find well supported by the data.

Ring chromosome 7 and sacral agenesis.

A ring chromosome 7 was found in a 19-month-old girl with microcephaly, growth and developmental delay, multiple angiomas, and partial sacral agenesis. Absent sacrum is a frequent finding in patients with 7q terminal deletions; in fact, genes involved in the sacral agenesis are localized in 7q36. However, this anomaly was not described previously in patients with a ring chromosome 7.

Influence of kid rearing systems on milk composition and yield of Murciano-Granadina dairy goats.

One-hundred eight lactations of Murciano-Granadina goats from different years were used to compare two kid rearing systems. Goats were separated into two groups: suckling and milking. Dams in the suckling group were milked once daily until kids were weaned (wk 0 to 7) and then were milked twice daily.

Milk partitioning during milking (machine and machine stripping milk fractions) was recorded every week and the residual milk every 2 weeks.
