Patterns and Factors Associated with Dyslipidemia Among Patients with Diabetes Mellitus Attending Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, Uganda.

Background: Dyslipidemia in Sub-Saharan Africa has been on the disproportionate rise among diabetes patients across various contextual settings due to its patterns and associated factors. This study determined the patterns and factors associated with dyslipidemia among diabetes patients attending Hoima Regional Referral Hospital (HRRH).

Methods: This was a hospital-based cross-sectional study conducted at HRRH between October 2022 and January 2023, enrolled 375 adult diabetes patients consecutively from diabetic outpatient clinic.

Immunogenomic determinants of exceptional response to immune checkpoint inhibition in renal cell carcinoma.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors can lead to 'exceptional', durable responses in a subset of persons. However, the molecular basis of exceptional response (ER) to immunotherapy in metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (mccRCC) has not been well characterized. Here we analyzed pretherapy genomic and transcriptomic data in treatment-naive persons with mccRCC treated with standard-of-care immunotherapies: (1) combination of programmed cell death protein and ligand 1 (PD1/PDL1) and cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated protein 4 inhibitors (IO/IO) or (2) combination of PD1/PDL1 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor inhibitors (IO/VEGF).

Normothermic regional perfusion mobile teams in controlled donation after circulatory death pathway: Evidence and peculiarities.

To facilitate the implementation of controlled donation after circulatory death (cDCD) programs even in hospitals not equipped with a local Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) team (Spokes), some countries and Italian Regions have launched a local cDCD network with a ECMO mobile team who move from Hub hospitals to Spokes for normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) implantation in the setting of a cDCD pathway. While ECMO teams have been clearly defined by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization, regarding composition, responsibilities and training programs, no clear, widely accepted indications are to date available for NRP teams. Although existing NRP mobile networks were developed due to the urgent need to increase the number of cDCDs, there is now the necessity for transplantation medicine to identify the peculiarities and responsibility of a NRP team for all those centers launching a cDCD pathway.

Autoptic Findings in Patients Treated with (VA-ECMO) after Cardiac Arrest.

This study examines the results of autopsy examinations specifically aimed at documenting complications arising from the implantation phase and treatment with veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) in patients with refractory cardiac arrest. ECMO and VA-ECMO in particular are life-saving interventions that, in the case of cardiac arrest, can temporarily replace cardiac pump function. VA-ECMO is, however, a very invasive procedure and is associated with early mechanical, haemorrhagic, and thrombotic events, infections, and late multi-organ dysfunction.

Dermal exposure assessment of formal e-waste dismantlers to flame retardants and plasticizers using passive sampling methodologies.

The recycling of e-waste can lead to the release of organic chemicals when materials containing additives are subjected to dismantling and grinding. In this context, the exposure of workers from a Catalonian e-waste facility to flame retardants and plasticizers (including organophosphate esters (OPEs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and dechloranes) was assessed using T-shirts and wristbands as passive samplers. The study area includes an area exclusively dedicated to cathodic ray-tube (CRT) TVs dismantling, and a grinding area where the rest of e-waste is ground.

Tuscany Normothermic Regional Perfusion Mobile Teams for Controlled Donation After Circulatory Death.

Introduction: To facilitate the implementation of controlled donation after circulatory death (cDCD) programs even in hospitals not equipped with a local extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) team, some countries have launched a local cDCD network with an ECMO mobile team for normothermic regional perfusion (NRP). In the Tuscany region, in 2021, the Regional Transplant Authority launched a cDCD program to make the cDCD pathway feasible even in peripheral hospitals with NRP mobile teams, which were "converted" existing ECMO mobile teams, composed of highly skilled and experienced personnel.

Methods: We describe the Tuscany cDCD program, (2021-2023), for cDCD from peripheral hospitals with NRP mobile teams.

Brain Death Donors on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Support.

Objectives: We investigated donors with brain death on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support, a clinically challenging situation due to hemodynamic instability frequently encountered in these donors, which may threaten organ function.

Materials And Methods: We described our experience with 15 utilized brain death donors on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support, consecutively admit-ted in our intensive care unit (which is a referral center for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) from 2018 to 2023. We investigated whether utilization rate for brain death donors on extracor-poreal membrane oxygenation was affected by the introduction of a monitoring hemodynamic schedule during the 6-hour observation period.

Assessing the role of habitat, climate, and anthropization gradients on terrestrial mammal diversity in the western Mediterranean basin.

Mammal species globally exhibit distribution patterns conditioned by environmental conditions and human impact. The Mediterranean basin provides an ideal system to study these effects due to its diverse climate, and habitat conditions. In this work, we aim to assess the impact of landscape heterogeneity and anthropization degree on terrestrial mammal diversity in this region.

Spino-pelvic parameters and back pain in patients without coronal deformity or history of spinal surgery: A cross-sectional analysis.

Background: During the last two decades, there has been a growing interest in spinal sagittal alignment. Most published studies have focused on the role of spinopelvic parameters in patients with adult spinal deformity or in those with previous spinal fusion.

Objective: The aim of this study was to explore possible association between disability related to back pain and spinopelvic parameters in the absence of coronal deformity or previous spinal surgery.

Pesticides in water and sediments from natural protected areas of Spain and their associated ecological risk.

In the last years, issues related to intensive agriculture have been found in protected areas potentially harming wildlife. This study aimed to analyze a wide range of pesticides in water and sediments of two protected areas namely Doñana Natural Park (DNP) and Tablas de Daimiel National Park (TDNP) performing an environmental risk assessment in order to highlight potential risks to living organisms derived from pesticide burden. Higher pesticide load was found in DNP than TDNP with similar distribution profiles, with pyrethroid insecticides (PYRs) the main detected class.

Active Donor Management Goals in Serial Donors After Brain Death.

Objectives: Management of potential organ donors is crucial in the donation process, considering that hemodynamic instability is quite common.

Materials And Methods: In the this single-center retrospective observational study, we analyzed 87 utilized brain death donors consecutively admitted to our intensive care unit from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2022. We assessed the achievement of donor management goals during the observation period, and we also evaluated whether the achieve-ment of donor goals differed between younger and older donors (arbitrary age cutoff of 65 years).

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease burden, grades and erythrocytosis at a tertiary hospital in western Uganda.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide among people over 40 years of age, and erythrocytosis is one of the major complications associated with increased mortality among COPD patients. The study aimed to determine the proportion of COPD, associated factors, and the burden of erythrocytosis among COPD participants.

First-in-human liver transplantation from a centenarian deceased donor after brain death.

Liver transplantation from elderly donors is expanding due to demand for liver grafts, aging of recipients and donors, and introduction of machine perfusion. We report on a liver transplant from a 100-year-old deceased donor after brain death. The liver was transplanted after the use of hypothermic machine perfusion to a 60-year-old recipient with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma undergoing neoadjuvant immunotherapy.

Chaotic finite difference operators.

In this article, we analyze the chaotic behavior of finite difference operators associated with certain differential equations. Our examples range from numerical schemes for a birth-and-death model with proliferation to a class of second-order partial differential equations that includes the hyperbolic heat transfer equation, the telegraph equation, and the wave equation. We provide sufficient conditions on the spatial and time steps of the scheme that guarantee chaos for the corresponding operators, and we compare them with the conditions needed to ensure chaotic analytical solutions.

Variegation is a rare type of mosaicism not fully studied in plants, especially fruits. We examined red and white sections of grape (Vitis vinifera cv. 'Béquignol') variegated berries and found that accumulation of products from branches of the phenylpropanoid and isoprenoid pathways showed an opposite tendency.
