Introduction: Analgesics are among the most widely used drugs worldwide. The French Addictovigilance Network (FAN) established the antalgiques stupéfiants et ordonnances sécurisées (ASOS [narcotic analgesics and secure prescriptions]) survey in order to assess the dissemination of tamper-resistant prescription forms for narcotic analgesic within the medical community, as well as the nature and evolution of the prescriptions. After outlining the missions of the FAN, this article will describe the population treated with narcotic analgesics in France, their therapeutic indications and how the data have evolved since 2007.

France has several monitoring systems that form the foundation of its health safety surveillance. This system is designed for the early detection of signals and their swift into an action system that enables timely, appropriate, and effective interventions to protect public health. These signals are considered alerts when sufficiently validated after an initial risk assessment and if they represent a potential threat to public health, necessitating an appropriate response.

Article Synopsis
  • Aprotinin was taken off the market in 2008 due to safety concerns but was reintroduced in France in 2018. A study was conducted to compare its effectiveness with tranexamic acid in high-risk cardiac surgery patients.
  • Economic analysis showed no significant difference in overall costs between the two treatments, but the tranexamic acid group incurred higher costs for blood products.
  • The initial higher cost of aprotinin is compensated by the greater expenses of blood products required for patients treated with tranexamic acid.

Objectives: At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the French Addictovigilance Network drew attention to the need to facilitate access to methadone while ensuring its safe use, in order to avoid the occurrence of overdoses and deaths. The objectives of the study were to assess the impact of the lockdowns on the incidence of methadone-use-related hospitalisations (MUHs) and describe the characteristics of patients and hospitalisations.

Study Design: An interrupted time series using the unobserved components model was performed to predict the monthly incidence of MUHs in 2020 on the basis of previous years' data and compared with MUHs observed.

Backgrounds: The Covid-19 pandemic offered a unique opportunity to investigate trends in hospitalizations related to psychoactive substance intoxication, since the usual health burden of social use at parties and gatherings was likely to be decreased during lockdowns and curfew periods. Since young adults are the main users of psychoactive substances for experimental and recreational purposes, this study identified and compared hospitalization trends in young adults and adults over 30 years old.

Methods: This national cohort study was conducted using the French hospital discharge database.

Abnormal activation of the fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19)/fibroblast growth factor receptor 4 (FGFR4) signaling pathway has been shown to drive the proliferation of a significant portion of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Resistance and toxicity are serious drawbacks that have been observed upon use of the current first- and second-line treatment options for HCC, therefore warranting the investigation of alternative therapeutic approaches. We report the development and biological characterization of a covalent inhibitor that is highly potent and exquisitely specific to FGFR4.
