Background: Normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) aims to reduce ischemia-reperfusion injury in donor livers and its clinical manifestation, early allograft dysfunction (EAD) by maintaining perfusion and oxygenation. However, there is limited data on which NMP perfusate biomarkers might be associated with such EAD and the role of perfusate hemoglobin has not been assessed.

Methods: We performed a pilot retrospective analysis of adult donor livers undergoing NMP between 2020 and 2022 at our center.

The recurrence of colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) following liver resection is common; approximately 40% of patients will experience tumor recurrence post-surgery. Renin-angiotensin inhibitors (RASis) have been shown to attenuate the growth and progression of CRLM in pre-clinical models following liver resection. This study examined the efficacy of the RASi captopril on patient-derived colorectal liver metastasis organoids.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on an opportunistic pathogen that thrives in harsh environments and often leads to outbreaks in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), primarily caused by a specific clone, referred to as the "Infectious clone."
  • It introduces a new method called hypervariable-locus melting typing (HLMT) that allows rapid detection and typing of this pathogen without the need for cultivation, achieving high accuracy with 97% specificity and 96% sensitivity compared to traditional whole genome sequencing (WGS).
  • The HLMT protocol is advantageous for large-scale environmental and clinical screenings, offering cost and time efficiency that is particularly beneficial in low- to middle-income countries.

Here, we present a computational protocol to perform a spatiotemporal reconstruction of an epidemic. We describe steps for using epidemiological data to depict how the epidemic changes over time and for employing clustering analysis to group geographical units that exhibit similar temporal epidemic progression. We then detail procedures for analyzing the temporal and spatial dynamics of the epidemic within each cluster.

Red yeast rice (RYR) is marketed as a dietary supplement because it contains natural 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors (statins), including monacolin K. However, there is concern that some RYR supplements may be adulterated with the pharmaceutical drug lovastatin to enhance health claims. We have developed an optimized method to isolate monacolin K/lovastatin from complex RYR dietary supplement matrices to then test for adulteration in RYR supplements using stable carbon isotope (δC) analysis.
