Objective: Reduced expression or defective targeting of the sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) to the cell membrane in thyroid tumours has been reported. The expression of the NIS gene is up-regulated by TSH through the cAMP pathway and the characterization of the promoter region of the rat NIS gene revealed the existence of a degenerate cAMP response element (CRE) sequence. The absence of clinical symptoms, and the aspecificity of the radiological pattern make the diagnosis very difficult.
Case Presentation: We here report the case of a 73-year-old man with Warthin's tumour who was brought to our attention because of a swelling in the parotid region.
Metastases to the tracheobronchial tree may be considered rare, and melanoma metastases to the trachea are very uncommon. We here report the case of a 61-year-old woman with metastatic melanoma to the trachea occurring 2 years after the excision of a right shoulder skin nodule. The patient underwent argon plasma coagulation (APC) recanalization of the malignant airway under flexible bronchoscopy, which led to the stable resolution of the respiratory symptoms.

The nuclear transcription factors cAMP-responsive element binding protein (CREB) and inducible cAMP early repressor (ICER) are among the final targets of this signalling cascade.
Design: In our study we focused on the expression of CREB and ICER genes in the nodular as well as in the extranodular tissue of hyperfunctioning tumours of the thyroid.
We report a rare case of breast carcinoma metastatic to the ethmoid sinus. An 83-year-old female patient with an intraductal breast carcinoma presented the first symptoms of metastasis to the paranasal sinuses four years after radical mastectomy and axillary node dissection. A review of the literature revealed that only three such cases have been described so far.

Since a mandatory use of general anesthesia for all hernia repairs is questionable, the feasibility of laparoscopic extraperitoneal herniorraphy using spinal anesthesia combined with nitrous oxide insufflation was investigated.
Methods: Over a 4-month period, February to May 1998, we performed 35 consecutive total extraperitoneal inguinal hernia procedures (24 unilateral, 11 bilateral) using spinal anesthesia and nitrous oxide extraperitoneal gas.

We previously reported the expression of endothelin-1 (ET-1) in granulosa cells (GCs) of the human ovary and the presence of ET-1-like immunoreactivity in human follicular fluid obtained from women in an in vitro fertilization program. In follicular fluid, but not in plasma, the levels of ET-1-like immunoreactivity were higher in gonadotropin-stimulated vs. spontaneous cycles, suggesting hormonal regulation of follicular ET-1.

Using the NEO Five Factor Inventory, this study examined the general personality factors of the polar worker compared to a normative population, and how these factors differ according to the worker's occupational classification and the polar region in which he or she is working.
