Viruses shield their genetic information by enclosing the viral nucleic acid inside a protein shell (capsid), in a process known as genome packaging. Viruses follow essentially two main strategies to package their genome: Either they co-assemble their genetic material together with the capsid protein or an empty shell (procapsid) is first assembled and then the genome is pumped inside the capsid by a molecular motor that uses the energy released by ATP hydrolysis. During packaging the viral nucleic acid is highly condensed through a meticulous arrangement in concentric layers inside the capsid.

Article Synopsis
  • In 2023, Europe raised concerns about rising severe neonatal infections due to a new lineage of echovirus 11 (E11), prompting an analysis of E11 cases in Spain from 2019 to 2023.
  • Out of 1,288 samples, 103 were found to be E11-positive, but the detection rates and severity of infections among neonates did not significantly change after the new lineage appeared in June 2022.
  • The findings suggest that the new lineage 1 is not responsible for increased neonatal infections, but the discovery of novel E11 recombinants linked to severe cases highlights the need for better monitoring and surveillance.

The increasing demand for optimizing the use of agricultural resources will require the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and precision farming management. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) sprayers seem promising due to their potential to perform precision or spot spraying, particularly in woody crop environments where total surface spraying is unnecessary. However, incorporating this technology is limited by the lack of scientific knowledge about the environmental risks associated with UAV sprayers and the strict legal framework.

Acquiring fresh and well-characterized tumor tissue samples is critical for conducting high-quality "omics" studies. However, it can be particularly challenging in the context of prostate cancer (PC) due to the unique nature of this organ and the high heterogeneity associated with this tumor. On the other hand, histopathologically characterizing samples before their storage without causing significant tissue alterations is also an intriguing challenge.
