Article Synopsis
  • Lack of research on treating refractory hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) post-liver transplant leads to this case study that shows promising outcomes using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
  • A 59-year-old patient with alcohol-related liver cirrhosis faced severe hypoxemia and required intensive care, where ECMO was implemented after other therapies failed, resulting in significant recovery.
  • The patient was discharged after 27 days with improved oxygen saturation and no symptoms, although he required steroids for acute rejection episodes.

Retail stores maintain fresh rice noodles (FRNs) at room temperature because refrigeration negatively impacts FRNs' texture. The room temperature and high water activity of FRNs help spore-forming Bacillus cereus to grow and produce toxins. In this study, the effect of steam cooking on survival and different storage temperatures on the growth and enterotoxins production of B.

Characterization of the microbiomes of pre-launch spacecraft in spacecraft assembly facilities is an important step in keeping crews healthy during journeys that can last several hundred days in small artificial environments in space. , a foodborne pathogenic bacterium, has the potential to be a significant source of food contamination in such environments. This bacterium is a spore-forming bacteria that resists different antimicrobial treatments in cleanrooms where spacecraft are assembled.

Background: The increase of quality of life, the improvement in the perioperative care programs, the use of the frailty index, and the surgical innovation has allowed to access of complex abdominal surgery for elderly patients like liver resection. Despite of this, in patients aged 70 or older there is a limitation for the implementation ERAS protocolos. The aim of this study is to evaluate the implementation ERAS protocol on elderly patients (≥70 years) undergoing liver resection.

Egg powders are increasingly popular ingredients, due to their functionality and compactness, in industrial food production and preparation at homes. However, there is a lack of studies that evaluate the thermal resistance of Enteritidis PT30 and its potential surrogate NRRL B-2354 in egg powders. This study examined the log-linear relationship between the thermal resistance of Enteritidis (D-value) and the water activity (a) of egg powders.

Background: Liver transplantation (LT) is a curative treatment for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who are not candidates for resection. Despite the generalized use of the Milan criteria and up-to-seven criteria, new markers have been proposed to predict recurrence after LT. Biomarkers such as neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and scores such as the Model of Recurrence After Liver transplantation (MORAL) are used as predictors of post-LT recurrence.

Introduction: Ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) is the main cause of early allograft dysfunction (EAD) and subsequent primary allograft failure (PAF).

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to compare IRI, EAD, and PAF in liver transplantation in a cohort of patients perfused with histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate (HTK) solution and University of Wisconsin (UW) solution versus HTK alone.

Methods: A randomized trial was performed to compare outcomes in liver recipients who underwent transplantation surgery in the University Regional Hospital of Malaga, Spain.

Cocaethylene (the ethyl ester of benzoylecgonine) is a product of the interaction between ethanol and cocaine. The results of preclinical studies and of a pilot clinical study have shown cocaethylene to produce pharmacologic effects similar to those of cocaine. However, no information is available concerning the potency and pharmacokinetics of cocaethylene in comparison to those of cocaine in humans.

Objective: We describe the MR appearance of endometriosis involving the umbilicus in two patients. One patient had a history of laparoscopy performed through the umbilicus; the other had an umbilical hernia.

Materials And Methods: MR imaging was performed using both a body coil and a spine coil (with the patient lying prone on the spine coil).

Preclinical studies have shown cocaethylene (the ethyl ester of benzoylecgonine) to produce pharmacologic effects of similar magnitude to those of cocaine. These observations, however, cannot establish whether or not cocaethylene produces cocaine-like subjective effects. We report the results of experiments in which three healthy male, paid volunteers were intravenously injected with the water soluble fumarate salt of cocaethylene in escalating doses.
