SiO2 coating effects in the magnetic anisotropy of Fe3-xO4 nanoparticles suitable for bio-applications.

We present radio frequency transverse susceptibility (TS) measurements on oleic acid-coated and SiO2-coated Fe3-xO4 magnetite nanoparticles. The effects of the type of coating on the interparticle interactions and magnetic anisotropy are evaluated for two different particle sizes in powder samples. On the one hand, SiO2 coating reduces the interparticle interactions as compared to oleic acid coating, the reduction being more effective for 5 nm than for 14 nm diameter particles.

Fatal histoplasmosis in a non-HIV patient in French Guiana.

Histoplasmosis is an endemic fungal infection that causes no symptoms or minor self-limited illnesses in most cases. Severe forms are commonly reported in patients with immunodeficiency disorders; histoplasmosis is considered to be an opportunistic infection in patients with AIDS. We report a case of disseminated histoplasmosis in a patient with no induced active suppression of the immune response.

Analysis of recombinant monoclonal antibodies by capillary zone electrophoresis.

Analytical platforms that characterize charge heterogeneity in therapeutic proteins, such as mAbs, are important tools that can be used to define quality attributes. CZE separates protein moieties close to their native state and is a valuable physicochemical analytical method that can be used in parallel with other orthogonal methods for characterization and comparability. In this study, custom conditions for the analysis of charge heterogeneity of two mAbs were developed with regard to critical parameters in the BGE, running conditions, and sample treatment.

[Immunohistochemistry in a case of EBV encephalitis].

EBV can produce a broad range of CNS disorders such as demyelinative diseases, acute encephalitis, cerebellar ataxia, myelitis, or meningitis. The role of EBV itself in acute encephalitis is not completely clear. Presently we described a 4 years old boy with EBV encephalitis that deceased after respiratory distress and cardio-respiratory arrest.

Observation of the (Λ)(7)He hypernucleus by the (e, e'K+) reaction.

An experiment with a newly developed high-resolution kaon spectrometer and a scattered electron spectrometer with a novel configuration was performed in Hall C at Jefferson Lab. The ground state of a neutron-rich hypernucleus, (Λ)(7)He, was observed for the first time with the (e, e'K+) reaction with an energy resolution of ~0.6 MeV.

Toll-like receptors trigger the innate immune response by activating various cell types such us macrophages and lymphocytes. We genotyped SNV of TLR3, TRL7, TLR8 and TLR10 in 863 Spanish and 150 Italian patients with Meniere's disease (MD) and 1,013 controls by using Taqman assays. Real-Time qPCR was used to measure the expression level of TLR10 in peripheral blood leukocytes.

Objective: Mutations of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) are responsible for autosomal dominant hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome. Recently, we reported frequent vascular abnormalities, including aneurysms in these patients, and demonstrated that STAT3 inhibition promoted aneurysm in mice. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of cell-specific STAT3 signaling in the susceptibility to aneurysm.

Plasmablastic transformation of low-grade B-cell lymphomas: report on 6 cases.

Histologic transformation of low-grade B-cell lymphoma to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is associated with poor prognosis. Although plasma cell differentiation is common in these lymphomas, an overt plasmablastic transformation (PBL-T) has been only rarely reported. We report 6 cases of PBL-T occurring in 3 chronic lymphocytic leukemias (CLL) and 3 follicular lymphomas.

Long-term effectiveness of infrared coagulation for the treatment of anal intraepithelial neoplasia grades 2 and 3 in HIV-infected men and women.

Aims: To assess the effectiveness and safety of infrared coagulation (IRC) for the ablation of anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) and to provide data on the prevalence of AIN in HIV-infected patients.

Patients And Methods: We performed a single-center, retrospective cohort study based on data collected from a prospectively compiled database of outpatients attended in the Clinical-Proctology-HIV-Unit (first visit). The effectiveness (normal anal cytology after 12 months of IRC) and safety of IRC were estimated.

Maintenance of skills, competencies, and performance in allergy and clinical immunology: time to lay the foundation for a universal approach.

Allergist/clinical immunologist maintenance of certification and training program reaccreditation are mandatory in some countries. The World Allergy Organization conducted surveys in 2009 and 2011 to assess where such programs were available and to promote the establishment of such programs on a global level. This was done with the presumption that after such an "inventory," World Allergy Organization could offer guidance to its Member Societies on the promotion of such programs to assure the highest standards of practice in the field of allergy and clinical immunology.

Behavioural/emotional problems in Brazilian children: findings from parents' reports on the Child Behavior Checklist.

To compare Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) findings for a large Brazilian general population sample with those for US children considering: (a) mean problem item ratings; (b) fit of the US-derived CBCL 8-syndrome model; (c) scale internal consistency measured by Cronbach's alphas; (d) effects of society, age, gender on CBCL problem scores; and (e) ability to discriminate referred from non-referred children. Myocardial stretch elicits a rapid increase in developed force, which is mainly caused by an increase in myofilament calcium sensitivity (Frank-Starling mechanism). Over the ensuing 10-15 min, a second gradual increase in force takes place. This slow force response to stretch is known to be the result of an increase in the calcium transient amplitude and constitutes the in vitro equivalent of the Anrep effect described 100 years ago in the intact heart.

Collaboration across eight research centers: unanticipated benefits and outcomes for project managers.

Managers of transdisciplinary collaborative research lack suitable didactic material to support the implementation of research methodologies and to build ongoing partnerships with community representatives and peers, both between and within multiple academic centers. This article will provide insight on the collaborative efforts of project managers involved in multidisciplinary research and their subsequent development of a tool kit for research project managers and/or directors. Project managers from the 8 Centers for Population Health and Health Disparities across the nation participated in monthly teleconferences to share experiences and offer advice on how to achieve high participation rates and maintain community involvement in collaboration with researchers and community leaders to achieve the common goal of decreasing health inequities.

Three mathematical models, two logistic models (previously published in previous works) and one mechanistic, developed in this work and based on Michaelis-Menten kinetics, were compared to select the most adequate model in describing the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory activity of bioactive peptide mixtures obtained from cheese whey protein. The significance of both the model and its parameters as well as the value of the regression coefficient was used as criteria to select the most adequate model for obtaining the IC(50) values corresponding to each bioactive peptides mixture. The best results were obtained with the Michaelis-Menten-based model because it provided the best fits and in addition the values for its parameters were always significant.

Introduction: Inflammatory external root resorption (IERR) requires damage or loss of the protective layer and an inflammatory process in the unprotected root surface. Infection of the pulp space can occur after a serious injury and stimulate an inflammatory response. When the inflammatory stimulus is long-standing, the destructive phase will continue until the stimulation is removed.
