Phenomenology and geographical gradients of atmospheric deposition in southwestern Europe: Results from a multi-site monitoring network.

This article presents the results of atmospheric deposition from a 15-sites network which cover remote, agricultural, urban and industrial areas in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with the aim of exploring geographical, climatic and natural vs anthropogenic gradients. Annual average fluxes of global deposition, discriminating insoluble (3,5-20,7 g m year) and soluble-inorganic (7,1-45,5 g m year) aerosols are discussed, seasonal patterns are regarded, and an attempt to estimate the impact of the main sources is presented. The wide range of atmospheric deposition fluxes (DF) regarding soluble (DF) and insoluble (DF) has been investigated taking into consideration the contribution from nearby to long-distance sources, such as African dust, or regional-to-nearby ones, which include agricultural dust in the Ebro Valley, industrial emissions at different parts, urban dust at all cities, or saline dust resuspension from a dissicated lake bed.

A Microbial Relationship Between Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Depressive Symptoms.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is associated with depressive symptoms, but this relationship is poorly understood. Emerging research suggests that gut microbes are associated with symptoms in persons with IBS. The purpose of this integrative review is to describe the state of the science of the microbial relationship between IBS and depressive symptoms.

Impact of mixing layer height variations on air pollutant concentrations and health in a European urban area: Madrid (Spain), a case study.

The occurrence of local high-pollution episodes in densely populated urban areas, which have huge fleets of vehicles, is currently one of the most worrying problems associated with air pollution worldwide. Such episodes are produced under specific meteorological conditions, which favour the sudden increase of levels of air pollutants. This study has investigated the influence of the mixing layer height (MLH) on the concentration levels of atmospheric pollutants and daily mortality in Madrid, Spain, during the period 2011-2014.

Functional analysis of glycosylation in Etanercept: Effects over potency and stability.

Etanercept is a biotechnological product that has a complex glycosylation profile. To elucidate Etanercept glycosylation effect over biological activity and stability, we deglycosylated sequentially this molecule. Sequential deglycosylation was performed to understand which glycans are critical for Etanercept folding and activity.

Vasodilator Stress CMR and All-Cause Mortality in Stable Ischemic Heart Disease: A Large Retrospective Registry.

Objectives: This study explored the association of ischemic burden, as measured by vasodilator stress cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR), with all-cause mortality and the effect of revascularization on all-cause mortality in patients with stable ischemic heart disease (SIHD).

Background: In patients with SIHD, the association of ischemic burden, derived from vasodilator stress CMR, with all-cause mortality and its role for decision-making is unclear.

Methods: The registry consisted of 6,389 consecutive patients (mean age: 65 ± 12 years; 38% women) who underwent vasodilator stress CMR for known or suspected SIHD.

Single-anastomosis duodenoileal bypass as a revisional or second-step operation after sleeve gastrectomy.

Background: One-loop duodenal switch leads to weight loss and improvement or resolution of co-morbidities similar to standard duodenal switch, and it is technically less demanding.

Objectives: To analyze the weight loss and metabolic improvement after conversion of sleeve gastrectomy to single-anastomosis duodenoileal bypass.

Prospects of Autonomous Volcanic Monitoring Stations: Experimental Investigation on Thermoelectric Generation from Fumaroles.

Fumaroles represent evidence of volcanic activity, emitting steam and volcanic gases at temperatures between 70 and 100 ∘ C . Due to the well-known advantages of thermoelectricity, such as reliability, reduced maintenance and scalability, the present paper studies the possibilities of thermoelectric generators, devices based on solid-state physics, to directly convert fumaroles heat into electricity due to the Seebeck effect. For this purpose, a thermoelectric generator composed of two bismuth-telluride thermoelectric modules and heat pipes as heat exchangers was installed, for the first time, at Teide volcano (Canary Islands, Spain), where fumaroles arise in the surface at 82 ∘ C .

A Novel Clinical and Stress Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (C-CMR-10) Score to Predict Long-Term All-Cause Mortality in Patients with Known or Suspected Chronic Coronary Syndrome.

Vasodilator stress cardiac magnetic resonance (stressCMR) has shown robust diagnostic and prognostic value in patients with known or suspected chronic coronary syndrome (CCS). However, it is unknown whether integration of stressCMR with clinical variables in a simple clinical-imaging score can straightforwardly predict all-cause mortality in this population. We included 6187 patients in a large registry that underwent stressCMR for known or suspected CCS.

Phenotyping peach-allergic patients sensitized to lipid transfer protein and analysing severity biomarkers.

Background: Patients with peach allergy due to nsLTP sensitization constitute a heterogeneous group in terms of sensitization profile and severity. This could be due to the presence of additional allergies to pollens. The aim of this study was to analyse the clinical characteristics, sensitization profile and severity of reactions in peach-allergic patients sensitized to nsLTP from two Mediterranean areas with different pollen exposure.

MR imaging findings in perineal nodular induration ("cyclist´s nodule"): A case report.

Perineal nodular induration (PNI) is a rare condition related to sports linked to the use of a saddle, mostly cycling, thought to be caused by the compression of the soft tissue between the saddle and the ischial tuberosity. We report a case of a 59-year-old amateur cyclist male who presented with 2 bilateral nodular perineal lesions that were evaluated with ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI findings, along with the history of a strong cycling habit, led to the diagnosis of PNI, and a conservative management was adopted.

Longitudinal strain in remote non-infarcted myocardium by tissue tracking CMR: characterization, dynamics, structural and prognostic implications.

Purpose: In ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients, longitudinal strain (LS) in remote non-infarcted myocardium (RNM) has not yet been characterized by tissue tracking (TT) cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). In STEMI patients, we aimed to characterize RNM-LS by TT-CMR and to assess both its dynamics and its structural and prognostic implications.

Methods: We recruited 271 patients with a first STEMI studied with TT-CMR 1 week after infarction.

Lifestyle modifications focused on diet, physical activity, and behavior have a modest impact on weight reduction in children, adolescents, and young adults (YA) with overweight and obesity. Several anti-obesity medications (AOMs) have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use among adult patients with a body mass index (BMI) ≥27 kg/m and at least one obesity-related illness. However, only two FDA-approved AOMs are available for use in children and adolescents, which leads to the frequent off-label use of adult AOMs among this population.

Multicentric study of cervical cancer screening with human papillomavirus testing and assessment of triage methods in Latin America: the ESTAMPA screening study protocol.

Introduction: Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing is replacing cytology in primary screening. Its limited specificity demands using a second (triage) test to better identify women at high-risk of cervical disease. Cytology represents the immediate triage but its low sensitivity might hamper HPV testing sensitivity, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), where cytology performance has been suboptimal.

PIWI-interacting RNAs are differentially expressed during cardiac differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells.

PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are a class of non-coding RNAs initially thought to be restricted exclusively to germline cells. In recent years, accumulating evidence has demonstrated that piRNAs are actually expressed in pluripotent, neural, cardiac and even cancer cells. However, controversy remains around the existence and function of somatic piRNAs.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in solid waste landfill cover soil: Chemical and isotopic composition vs. degradation processes.

Landfills for solid waste disposal release to the atmosphere a large variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Bacterial activity in landfill cover soils can play an important role in mitigating VOC emission. In order to evaluate the effects of degradation processes and characterize VOCs composition in landfill cover soil, gases from 60 sites and along 7 vertical profiles within the cover soil were collected for chemical and isotopic analysis at two undifferentiated urban solid waste disposal sites in Spain: (i) Pinto (Madrid) and (ii) Zurita (Fuerteventura, Canary Islands).

Perinatal HIV-1 Infection in an Extremely Low Birth Weight Infant.

There is limited guidance on how to treat extremely premature infants with HIV infection. This can lead to delay of antiretroviral therapy initiation adversely affecting magnitude of HIV reservoir and disease progression. We report perinatal HIV-1 infection in an extremely low birth weight infant born at 24 5/7 weeks of gestation.

Unexpected Caregiving in Later Life: Illuminating the Narratives of Resilience of Grandmothers and Relative Caregivers through Photovoice Methodology.

This research study implements photovoice methodology with unexpected caregivers to illuminate the lived experiences of female grandparents and relative caregivers who are raising young children in the later stages of their life. As they enter older adulthood, grandmothers are increasingly finding themselves taking care of their children's children for various reasons, including, but not limited to, their adult child's incarceration, mental health issues, drug and alcohol addiction, or child abuse or neglect. Informed by various feminist theoretical lenses, we use photovoice methodology to highlight the narratives of resilience and explore the ways in which grandmothers re-conceptualize their roles and identity as an unexpected caregiver and the sources of strength and resilience that inform the ways in which they navigate the various circumstances in their lives.

Vestibular Impairment in Hemifacial Spasm Syndrome: A Case Report.

A 52-year-old man presented with left hemifacial spasm (HFS). A magnetic resonance imaging scan showed compression of the left facial nerve at the cerebellopontine angle by a dolichoectatic basilar artery. The neurotological evaluation showed an otolithic deficit, with canalicular preservation and normal hearing.

Health Disparities Past the Classroom: The Impact of Frontier Medicine on Students.

In 2000, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education issued a standard for cultural competence for medical students, stating the necessity of understanding different belief systems and cultures and how biases can affect health care and perpetuate health disparities. While many programs travel overseas to address this standard, our study evaluated an in-state, study-away, service-learning mission trip program's efficacy of improving cultural competence and awareness of health disparities, as well as facilitating the ease of participation for students. Our overall goal was to provide a rich field opportunity in our own backyard that would allow students to visit a foreign environment without leaving the country, simultaneously eliminating the financial burden that comes with international travel and to expose the students to health disparities through partnership with local community centers and clinics present in the frontier region of southwest Texas (2016 - 2018).

Background: The "white-flight" phenomenon of the mid-20th century contributed to the perpetuation of residential segregation in American society. In light of recent reports of racial segregation in our healthcare system, could a contemporary "white-flight" phenomenon also exist?

Methods: The New York Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System was used to identify all Manhattan and Bronx residents of New York city who underwent elective cardiothoracic, colorectal, general, and vascular surgeries from 2010 to 2016. Primary outcome was borough of surgical care in relation to patient's home borough.

The Contour-Early Human Experience of a Novel Aneurysm Occlusion Device.

Background And Purpose: Endosaccular flow disruption is a recognized treatment options for treating both unruptured and ruptured aneurysms. The Contour device is designed to target the neck of an aneurysm and cause flow disruption within the aneurysm hence promoting thrombosis and neo-endothelialization at the neck. This article presents initial experiences with the Contour.

Detection and quantification of leached ethylene glycol in biopharmaceuticals by RP-UHPLC.

Biopharmaceuticals are in direct contact with different plastic materials, which can contribute to process-related impurities. Polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) is used for storage and transportation of biopharmaceuticals and it is synthetized from the poly-condensation reaction between ethylene glycol, 1,4-cyclodimethanol and dimethyl terephthalate. PETG bottles are analyzed for such impurities prior to release; however, the nature of the pharmaceutical matrix can extract impurities, so it is important to measure these contaminants in biopharmaceuticals.
