This study tested the hypothesis that puberty in primates is triggered by a remodeling of synaptic inputs and/or glial coverage of hypothalamic gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons. Male rhesus monkeys were prepubertally castrated at 16 months of age and were killed and perfused either 1 month later (n = 4, juvenile group) or at 30 months of age, shortly after initiation of the pubertal increase in pulsatile GnRH release (n = 4, adult group). Hypothalami were sectioned, immunocytochemically stained for GnRH, and processed for electron microscopy.

Previous studies have suggested that more defects are detected on SPET than on planar DMSA images. The aim of this study was to evaluate differences between planar and SPET imaging. Sixty-four kidneys from pyelonephritic patients were studied using both techniques.

Objective: To study the integrity of EPI vaccine storage during interruptions to the power supply.

Setting: Health centres in Colombo District.

Method: An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect information on staff compliance with regulations of the expanded program of immunisation (EPI) and alternative facilities available for refrigeration during power failure.

The chemical reactivity of various alpha-keto acid anions (beta-hydroxypyruvate, beta-phenylpyruvate, 2-ketobutyrate and 2-ketoglutarate) with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was investigated at physiological pH (7.4) and a temperature of 25 degrees C. The initial concentration of the alpha-keto acid anions was kept constant at 1.

Background And Methods: Human infections caused by Listeria monocytogenes often present as sporadic cases without any epidemiological relationship among them; however they also appear as outbreaks that are usually detected by an increase in the number of cases diagnosed by hospitals of the geographic area. Between December 1991 and May 1993, twenty four cases of listeriosis were detected in three hospitals of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; and they were classified as an outbreak. Our report describes its clinical, epidemiological and microbiological aspects.

Ontario is a spatially heterogenous province. Natural resource policies and management plans must therefore address and account for this heterogeneity. An eco-regionalization scheme must possess certain minimum criteria to be effective.

A 32-year-old male with febrile ulceronecrotic Mucha-Habermann disease (FUMHD) responsive to methotrexate is reported. This is a severe variant of pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta characterized by the acute onset of a widespread ulceronecrotic cutaneous eruption together with high fever and systemic involvement. To our knowledge, only 13 patients with FUMHD have been reported to date.

The objective of this study was to search for regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) abnormalities in adolescents with initial-stage schizophrenia by means of brain single-photon emission tomography (SPET) using technetium-99m hexamethylpropylene amine oxime (HMPAO). SPET studies were performed on a homogeneous sample of 15 carefully selected adolescents with a recent diagnosis of schizophrenia, and without previous electroconvulsive or antipsychotic drug treatment. Computed tomography (CT) and electro-encephalographic (EEG) studies were performed in all patients.

A locally made mucus aspirator.

Ceylon Med J

September 1995

Examination of nasopharyngeal aspirate for the presence of viral antigens in children with acute lower respiratory tract infections is a standard procedure in establishing a viral aetiology. In the absence of other sophisticated methods such as lung puncture or trans-tracheal aspiration, mucopus aspirated from the nasopharynx can be used even to identify caustive organisms. Here, it is essential to perform a microscopic examination in addition to culture.

This study directly tested the inhibin hypothesis by examining the ability of replacement with recombinant human (rh-) inhibin, either alone or in combination with testosterone (T), to maintain FSH secretion and FSH beta messenger RNA (mRNA) at intact levels after orchidectomy in the hypophysiotropically clamped juvenile rhesus monkey. Thirteen male monkeys (11-21 months of age) received an intermittent i.v.

Glutamate (Glu) is the most prevalent excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain and has been implicated in the regulation of GnRH secretion in several mammalian species, including the monkey. To investigate the neuroanatomical basis for Glu-GnRH interactions, we performed an immunocytochemical study at both the light and electron microscopic levels on the brains of four female and five male macaques. Initially, we determined the location of Glu-immunoreactive (-ir) elements using a monoclonal antibody specific for glutaraldehyde-fixed Glu (Glu-2) and 3,3'-diaminobenzidine-4-HCl (DAB).

Puberty in primates is triggered by a gonad-independent reinitiation of a pulsatile mode of GnRH release. The purpose of the present study was to begin to examine the hypothesis that this neuroendocrine event is the result of structural or plastic changes within the neural network governing the activity of GnRH neurons. Specifically, we sought to determine whether polysialic acid neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM), a plasma membrane-associated glycoprotein that has previously been proposed to be a marker for postnatal neuronal plasticity, was expressed within GnRH neuron containing areas of the rhesus monkey hypothalamus.

We studied four generations of a Canary Islands family presenting a tardive heredodegenerative hearing loss, associated with IgA mesangial glomerulonephritis, of probable autosomal dominant heredity. With respect to the family, we revised Alport's syndrome, for possible transmission associated with X chromosome, as well as heredodegenerative hearing loss associated with renal pathology of autosomic transmission currently described; we differentiate these hearing losses from our case study, and we discuss the pathogeny of the auditive affection in the said hereditary syndromes. Lastly, we stress the autoimmune hypothesis because of the IgA nephropathy association in the family case, and we list the characteristics of the syndrome described.

There is evidence to suggest that the arginine vasopressin release observed in association with emesis after i.v. injection of cholecystokinin (CCK) and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) is mediated by stimulation of emetic centers in the brainstem.
