Tuberculosis Dactylitis in a Patient With Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Case Report.

Tuberculosis (TB) dactylitis of the hand is a rare and challenging pathology, requiring positive bacterial identification through culture or biopsy for diagnosis. Treatment is also challenging, although it typically yields an excellent response to long-term tuberculostatic therapy. We describe a case of osteoarticular tuberculous dactylitis in a 36-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and a history of lymphoma.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, characterized by progressive cognitive and functional decline and is associated with aging. Chronic inflammatory processes are also involved in its the etiology, as the consequence or cause of proteinopathy (amyloid and tau load in the brain). This study aimed to investigate the complete blood count and systemic inflammation indices in 61 individuals with AD, compared to 59 cognitively healthy individuals as controls.

Comprehensive scoping review of palliative care development in Africa: recent advances and persistent gaps.

Worldwide 56·8 million people need palliative care (PC), and Africa shows the highest demand. This study updates the 2017 review of African PC development, using a scoping review methodology based on Arksey and O'Malley's framework and the PRISMA-ScR checklist. The review was conducted across PUBMED, CINAHL, Embase, government websites, and the African PC Association Atlas, from 2017 to 2023, charting its progress using the new WHO framework for PC Development, which, in addition to Services, Education, Medicines, and Policies, two new dimensions were incorporated: Research and Empowerment of people and Communities.

Similarly to most known Enterococci, has been identified mostly in bacteremia, urinary tract infections, infective endocarditis, and biliary tract infections. We present a case of bacteriemia associated with traumatic soft tissue infection in a 77-year-old male patient, a polytrauma victim with a tibia-fibula open fracture after a forklift accident.

Proteomic signatures of Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementias: A comparative analysis.

Introduction: We aimed to identify unique proteomic signatures of Alzheimer's disease (AD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD).

Methods: We conducted a comparative proteomic analysis of 33 post mortem brains from AD, DLB, and PDD individuals without dementia focusing on prefrontal, cingulate, and parietal cortices, using weighted gene co-expression network analyses with differential enrichment analysis.

Results: Network modules revealed hub proteins common to all dementias.

M6495 is a first-in-class NANOBODY molecule and an inhibitor of ADAMTS-5, with the potential to be a disease modifying osteoarthritis drug. In order to investigate the PK/PD (pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic) properties of M6495, a single dose study was performed in cynomolgus monkeys with doses up to 6 mg/kg, with the goal of understanding the PK/PD properties of M6495. This study reports the case of a patient with nephrolithiasis who developed a nephropulmonary fistula resulting in the migration of renal coralliform stones to the lung parenchyma.

Wildfires can impact both freshwater and marine ecosystems through post-fire runoff, but its effects on bivalves, particularly those living in marine habitats, remain largely overlooked. While evidence exists that wildfire ash can alter the fatty acid (FA) and sugar profiles of aquatic biota, its influence on the biochemical profiles of bivalves have not been addressed to date. This study aimed to assess the effects of ash exposure on the FA and sugar profiles of two bivalve species used for human consumption: a freshwater clam (Corbicula fluminea) and a marine bivalve (Cerastoderma edule), additionally evaluating potential effects on their nutritional value.

Effectiveness of the RB51 vaccine in controlling brucellosis in adult beef cows.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of brucellosis control and reproductive performance using one or two doses of RB51 strain vaccine.

Methods: This experiment was conducted at two commercial beef farms (A,  = 477; and B,  = 673), which were selected due to their records of endemic brucellosis and a prevalence of 6 to 8% of seropositive cows. An initial serology screening (Day 0) was carried out in all cows using the Rose Bengal test (RB), and presumptive positive results were re-evaluated using a slow agglutination test with 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME).

Derotational Corrective Osteotomy for Pediatric Forearm Malunion: A Case Report.

In this case report, we describe an eight-year-old boy with both-bone forearm diaphyseal fracture that was treated conservatively after closed reduction with manipulation. Nine months after the injury, he returned to consultation, presenting a rotational deformity of the forearm and 20° of pronosupination limitation. He was submitted to corrective osteotomies, using three-dimensional (3D) planning and templating, using a double approach, and fixation with a four screw holes plate in each osteotomy.
