We tested the hypothesis that phosphorylation of S6 ribosomal protein (S6RP), a downstream target of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway, is a biomarker of antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) in heart allografts. Primary cultures of human aortic and microvascular endothelial cells (EC) were treated with anti-HLA class I and class II antibodies (Ab) and cell lysates were studied for phosphorylation of S6 ribosmal protein at Serine235/236 (p-S6RP). Immobilization-related hypercalcemia after renal failure in burn injury.

Objective: To describe a patient with hypercalcemia presumably due to immobilization in the setting of burn injury and acute renal failure.

Methods: We present a case report of a man who sustained a severe burn injury and then had renal failure and hypercalcemia. An additional series of patients with burns and immobilization was assessed for the presence of hypercalcemia.

[Cutaneous leishmaniasis in Northern Argentina: identification of risk factors in a case-cohort study of three municipalities in Salta].

The objective of this work was evaluate risk factors for acquiring cutaneous leishmaniasis in Salta, the region with the greatest indices of transmission in Argentina. A Case-cohort study was realized from June 1989 to December 1992. Clinical trial evidence for cardiovascular risk reduction in type 2 diabetes.

Major clinical trials have shown that excellent glycemic control, sustained over time, can prevent or delay the microvascular complications of diabetes, including retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy. No prospective trial has clearly shown that glycemic intervention can prevent the macrovascular complications of diabetes, such as myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular accident, and amputation. However, a number of landmark clinical trials have shown the efficacy of control of blood pressure and lipids and use of antiplatelet agents (mainly aspirin) in protecting the macrovasculature of individuals with diabetes.

Tegumentary leishmaniasis in Northern Argentina: distribution of infection and disease, in three municipalities of Salta, 1990-1992.

This work describes the epidemiological pattern of tegumentary leishmaniasis in an area north of Salta, Argentina. The prevalence and incidence were estimated by means of a cross-sectional study and two follow-up studies during two consecutive years. The Montenegro Skin Test (MST) was administered to 7336 subjects at baseline.

Follow-up of steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome: tubular proteinuria and enzymuria.

The aim of this study was to examine the compromise of proximal tubule cells in steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome patients with a histologic diagnosis of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) through assessment of the urinary levels of beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2M) and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) during active disease and remission over a follow-up period of 3 years. We studied 34 children with nephrotic syndrome: 12 with steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS) and massive proteinuria, 7 with steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome (SDNS) and 15 with steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS). Of the SSNS patients, 8 children were in remission (RM) and 7 were in relapse (RL).

Loss of attentional stimulus selection after extrastriate cortical lesions in macaques.

Many objects in natural visual scenes compete for attention. To identify the neural mechanisms necessary for visual attention, we made restricted lesions, affecting different quadrants of the visual field but leaving one quadrant intact, in extrastriate cortical areas V4 and TEO of two monkeys. Monkeys were trained to discriminate the orientation of a target grating surrounded by distracters.

[Clinical features and diagnosis of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis in patients of an endemic area in Salta].

Failure of highly immunogenic filarial proteins to provide host-protective immunity.

In areas that are endemic for lymphatic filariasis, there are individuals who are parasite free and who appear not to have experienced symptoms attributable to filarial infection. These "putatively immune" individuals may recognize immunogens that could be important in host protection. We have immunoscreened expression libraries expressing epitopes encoded by filarial open reading frames and have identified three antigens that are differentially recognized by the two polar clinical groups-endemic normals and asymptomatic microfilaremics.

Small intestinal stromal tumors: a clinicopathologic study of 20 cases with immunohistochemical assessment of cell differentiation and the prognostic role of proliferation antigens.

Small intestinal stromal tumors (SISTs), similar to their gastric counterpart, are complex because of their divergent cellular differentiation and because of the difficulty in accurately predicting their clinical outcome. We studied a series of 22 SISTs from 20 patients to characterize lineage and investigate prognostic morphologic parameters and possible histologic and immunohistochemical differences from gastric stromal tumors (GSTs) and to determine the potential prognostic value of proliferation markers. Cases were categorized into the three following groups based on mitotic count (MC) per 50 high-power fields and tumor size: (1) benign, n = 6 (< 5 MC, < 5 cm); (2) borderline, n = 6 (< 5 MC, > or = 5 cm); and (3) malignant, n = 10 (> or = 5 MC, any size).

The role of cryotherapy for airway complications after lung and heart-lung transplantation.

Objective: Although airway problems after lung and heart-lung transplantation have been greatly reduced due to changes in surgical technique, excessive granulation tissue at the anastomosis may threaten airway patency. Treatment options include electrocautery, dilation, laser coagulation and stent placement however, recurrence remains a problem. Cryotherapy, the controlled application of extreme cold, is effective at causing cell lysis in granulation tissue and may therefore be effective after lung transplantation for airway problems arising from granulation stenosis.

Evidence for the presence and participation of 85-75 KDa extracellular matrix components in cell interactions of Bufo arenarum gastrulation.

We studied the presence and distribution of the extracellular materials (ECM), obtained by mild embryonic dissociation through nondenaturing and denaturing PAGE, immunoblotting and immunocytochemical wholemount in the gastrulation of anuran amphibian Bufo arenarum. The SDS-PAGE, under reducing conditions, revealed the protein profile of the ECM which comprised six bands. The Western immunoblotting effected with antibodies against fibronectins (FN) of Xenopus laevis, Ambystoma mexicanum and Bufo arenarum revealed that the 210 and 190 KDa bands (EP1-EP2) present in the ECM were identified as FN.

Cisplatin and emesis: aspects of treatment and a new trial for delayed emesis using oral dexamethasone plus ondansetron beginning at 16 hours after cisplatin.

The marked progress in controlling emesis caused by cisplatin characterizes the current status of antiemetic treatment for all chemotherapy. Cisplatin has provided a model for antiemetic studies. Strategies for controlling cisplatin-induced emesis are at least as successful when applied to other chemotherapy and persistent problems such as delayed emesis and the emesis associated with consecutive-day chemotherapy are also similar to or less severe than those observed with cisplatin.

Alteration of morphogenetic cell interactions by 1-beta-D-arabinofuranosylcytosine in Bufo arenarum embryo.

Amphibian gastrulation was used as a model system to study the action of the nucleoside 1-beta-D-arabinofuranosylcytosine (Ara-C) on the early events of amphibian morphogenesis. Ara-C inhibits both glycoprotein and glycolipid synthesis and interferes with DNA synthesis. Thus, it is useful to investigate the importance of the cell surface and the nucleous during Bufo arenarum morphogenesis.

Originally designed in Quebec, the MOI project was a collaboration between two professors of social work from Quebec and two members of the Peruvian NGO called SUR in Villa de Salvador, one of poorest slum areas on the outskirts of Lima. The approach is founded on the notion that the body is the primary instrument through which a person can interact with the world around him or her, and that the physical and mental health of an individual exists within the context of healthy conditions of life that must include at least a basic social and health infrastructure as well as healthy hygiene practices on the part of individuals, families and the local community. Preschool children (ages 4-6), study a different part of the body and its proper care each week through classroom observation games.

Benign retroperitoneal cysts of müllerian type: a clinicopathologic study of three cases and review of the literature.

Benign retroperitoneal cysts (RPCs) of müllerian type may present as a pelvic mass in a perimenopausal or postmenopausal woman, and thus clinically can mimic an ovarian malignancy. We report three women, aged 73, 45, and 68 years, who presented with large RPC masses ranging from 8 to 17 cm in diameter. Histologically, the cysts were lined by benign müllerian-type epithelium: serous epithelium in two patients and mucinous epithelium in one patient.

Fatal mediastinal abscess from upper respiratory infection.

Suppurative mediastinitis following neck infection is an uncommon entity that carries a 40% mortality. It is most commonly associated with esophageal perforation or odontogenic abscess. The rapidity of spread has been attributed to dependent drainage from the neck into the mediastinum, negative intrathoracic pressure, and synergistic necrotizing bacterial growth.
