Article Synopsis
  • Women are underrepresented in otolaryngology fellowship director roles, with significantly lower percentages of women across various subspecialties compared to overall representation in academic otolaryngology.
  • The study highlights that women in these director positions have shown higher academic productivity compared to their male counterparts, as indicated by H-index and years of practice.
  • Overall, the findings suggest that while women are gaining ground in academic otolaryngology, they still face substantial gender disparities in leadership roles like fellowship directors.

Introduction Educational achievement is impacted by a student's ability to be present and motivated in the classroom. Since health and education influence one another, disparities in health insurance status among children may exert educationally relevant consequences. However, the association between health insurance coverage and school absenteeism remains poorly understood.

Social experience and pheromone signaling in olfactory neurons affect neuronal responses and male courtship behaviors in Drosophila. We previously showed that social experience and pheromone signaling modulate chromatin around behavioral switch gene fruitless, which encodes a transcription factor necessary and sufficient for male sexual behaviors. Fruitless drives social experience-dependent modulation of courtship behaviors and physiological sensory neuron responses to pheromone; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying this modulation of neural responses remain less clear.

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) as well as noradrenaline (NA) are key modulators of various fundamental brain functions including the control of appetite. While manipulations that alter brain serotoninergic signaling clearly affect body weight, studies implicating 5-HT transporters and NA transporters (5-HTT and NAT, respectively) as a main drug treatment target for human obesity have not been conclusive. The aim of this positron emission tomography (PET) study was to investigate how these central transporters are associated with changes of body weight after 6 months of dietary intervention or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery in order to assess whether 5-HTT as well as NAT availability can predict weight loss and consequently treatment success.

Ipsilateral transient axillary lymphadenopathy is well-documented following COVID-19 mRNA vaccine administration. Recently, rare mammographic findings of breast tissue changes with co-existing lymphadenopathy have been documented. Current literature on isolated ipsilateral true breast parenchymal changes on diagnostic mammography in symptomatic patients following COVID-19 mRNA vaccine administration is limited.

Purpose: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery is currently the most efficient treatment to achieve long-term weight loss in individuals with severe obesity. This is largely attributed to marked reductions in food intake mediated in part by changes in gut-brain communication. Here, we investigated for the first time whether weight loss after RYGB is associated with alterations in central noradrenaline (NA) neurotransmission.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are used in various clinical and preclinical models for immunomodulation. However, it remains unclear how the immunomodulatory effect of MSC is communicated. MSC-induced immunomodulation is known to be mediated through both MSC-secreted cytokines and direct cell-cell interactions.

How dietary selection affects genome evolution to define the optimal range of nutrient intake is a poorly understood question with medical relevance. We have addressed this question by analyzing and , recently diverged species with differential diet choice. larvae, specialized to a nutrient scarce diet, did not survive on sugar-rich conditions, while the generalist species was sugar tolerant.

Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is a process used for the stimulation and production of ultra-low permeability shale gas and tight oil resources. Fracking poses two main risks to groundwater quality: (1) stray gas migration and (2) potential contamination from chemical and fluid spills. Risk assessment is complicated by the lack of predrilling baseline measurements, limited access to well sites and industry data, the constant introduction of new chemical additives to frack fluids, and difficulties comparing data sets obtained by different sampling and analytical methods.

Organisms have evolved strikingly parallel phenotypes in response to similar selection pressures suggesting that there may be shared constraints limiting the possible evolutionary trajectories. For example, the behavioral adaptation of specialist Drosophila species to specific host plants can exhibit parallel changes in their adult olfactory neuroanatomy. We investigated the genetic basis of these parallel changes by comparing gene expression during the development of the olfactory system of two specialist Drosophila species to that of four other generalist species.

Despite extensive research on candidate pharmacological treatments and a significant and increasing prevalence, sepsis syndrome, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remain areas of unmet clinical need. Preclinical studies examining mesenchymal stromal cell (MSCs) based-therapies have provided compelling evidence of potential benefit; however, the precise mechanism by which MSCs exert a therapeutic influence, and whether MSC application is efficacious in humans, remains unknown. Detailed evaluation of the limited number of human trials so far completed is further hampered as a result of variations in trial design and biomarker selection.

Drosophila uses 50 different olfactory receptor neuron (ORN) classes that are clustered within distinct sensilla subtypes to decipher their chemical environment. Each sensilla subtype houses 1-4 ORN identities that arise through asymmetric divisions of a single sensory organ precursor (SOP). Despite a number of mutational studies investigating the regulation of ORN development, a majority of the transcriptional programs that lead to the different ORN classes in the developing olfactory system are unknown.

Purpose Of Review: The current review presents an update on the existing preclinical and human experience of mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) therapies for post-transplant immunomodulation.

Recent Findings: Although results from early clinical studies have demonstrated that the application of autologous and allogeneic MSC to be both safe and feasible in a solid organ transplantation setting, for example in liver, the efficacy of MSC immunotherapy demonstrated in preclinical models has yet to be replicated in human clinical trials.

Summary: Eagerly awaited results from the second generation of solid organ transplantation clinical trials, many of which are nearing completion, will perhaps establish the effectiveness of combining MSCs and low-dose pharmacological immunosuppression in promoting graft acceptance.
