Perioperative use of recombinant factor VII to prevent intraoperative aneurysm rupture in high risk patients: a preliminary safety evaluation.

Object: The authors present a safety evaluation of the perioperative use of recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa) in a series of subarachnoid hemorrhage patients undergoing microsurgical aneurysm clipping.

Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review of the records of 18 consecutive subarachnoid hemorrhage patients who underwent craniotomy for aneurysm clipping and received an intraoperative dose of rFVIIa. In each case, the aneurysm was felt to be a "high risk" lesion for intraoperative rupture either because it had bled multiple times prior to surgery or based on anatomical considerations.

Registry outcomes of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty revisions.

Unlabelled: Perceptions of the difficulty and outcome of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty revision (rev-UKA) vary. We analyzed differences in the complexity, cost, and survival of rev-UKAs compared with revision TKAs (rev-TKA). One hundred eighty knee arthroplasty revisions (68 rev-UKAs/112 rev-TKAs), defined as a minimum of tibial or femoral component revision, were identified from a community joint registry of 7587 knee implants performed between 1991 and 2005.

Excellent survival of all-polyethylene tibial components in a community joint registry.

Unlabelled: The advantages of the monoblock design and lower cost have prompted renewed interest in the all-polyethylene tibia in total knee arthroplasty. We prospectively followed patients with all-polyethylene tibial total knee arthroplasties over a 14-year period. Since 1991, 443 total knee arthroplasties using an all-polyethylene tibia component were implanted by 12 surgeons in four hospitals associated with a community registry.

Knee arthroplasty in the young patient: survival in a community registry.

We prospectively followed 1047 patients 55 years old or younger who underwent knee arthroplasty in a community joint registry over a 14-year period. Patients were implanted with 1047 joints of three predominant designs by 48 surgeons in four hospitals associated with a community joint registry.

The association of physical activity with lung cancer incidence in a cohort of older women: the Iowa Women's Health Study.

Background: We examined the potential association between physical activity and lung cancer in women.

Methods: In 1986, 36,929 women from Iowa, who were free of prior cancer, completed a questionnaire regarding physical activity, smoking, body mass index, and other life-style factors. Women were followed through 2002 for cancer incidence.

Positive association of farm or rural residence with acute myeloid leukemia incidence in a cohort of older women.

The etiology of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is relatively unknown. Incidence rates are highest in the agricultural Midwest region compared with other regions of the United States. Many studies have examined the relationship between farming and leukemia, but most have mainly focused on men.

Hormone replacement therapy is not associated with an increased risk of leukemia (United States).

Objective: Recent studies have reported an increased risk of certain cancers associated with hormone replacement therapy (HRT), possibly due to stimulation of estrogen receptors. Since estrogen receptors are expressed on certain hematopoietic cells, it is possible that HRT use may also increase the risk of leukemia.

Methods: A cohort of 37,172 post-menopausal Iowa women ages 55-69 years with no history of prior cancer was linked annually to the population-based state cancer registry through 2001.
