On-Chip Thermoelectric Devices Based on Standard Silicon Processing.

The strong reduction of thermal conductivity with respect to bulk silicon makes nanostructured silicon one of the best materials for highly efficient direct conversion of heat into electrical power and vice-versa. The widespread technologies for the integration of silicon devices can be used to define on-chip micro thermoelectric generators (scavengers); similar structures could also be used for precise and well-localized cooling through the reverse process of heat pumping. However, the road to the fabrication of integrated thermal energy scavengers or cooler, based on silicon, is still very long.

Role of Lugol solution before total thyroidectomy for Graves' disease: randomized clinical trial.

Background: Lugol solution is often administered to patients with Graves' disease before surgery. The aim is to reduce thyroid vascularization and surgical morbidity, but its real effectiveness remains controversial. The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of preoperative Lugol solution on thyroid vascularization and surgical morbidity in patients with Graves' disease undergoing total thyroidectomy.

Double CYP11B1/CYP11B2 Immunohistochemistry and Detection of KCNJ5 Mutations in Primary Aldosteronism.

Context: The search for somatic mutations in adrenals resected from patients with primary aldosteronism (PA) is performed by Sanger sequencing, often implemented with immunohistochemistry (IHC)-guidance focused on aldosterone-producing (CYP11B2-positive) areas.

Objective: To investigate the impact of double IHC for CYP11B1 and CYP11B2 on Sanger and next-generation sequencing (NGS).

Methods: We investigated 127 consecutive adrenal aldosterone-producing adenomas from consenting surgically cured PA patients using double IHC for CYP11B1 and CYP11B2, by Sanger sequencing and NGS.

The International Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma Grading System (IMTCGS) divides medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) into two categories, high- and low-grade tumors, which has a profound impact on patient outcomes. The aim of this study was to explore the association between IMTCGS grading, clinical data, and molecular status in sporadic MTC. A retrospective cohort study was performed on consecutive sporadic MTCs from patients undergoing initial surgery between January 2000 and January 2022 at the Padua Endocrine Surgery Unit.

Calcitonin levels in autoimmune atrophic gastritis-related hypergastrinemia.

Purpose: Calcitonin (Ct) is currently the most sensitive biochemical marker of C-cell disease (medullary thyroid cancer [MTC] and C-cell hyperplasia), but its specificity is relatively low. Our aim was to examine whether autoimmune atrophic gastritis (AAG) and chronic hypergastrinemia, with or without chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (AT), are conditions associated with increased Ct levels.

Methods: Three groups of patients were consecutively enrolled in this  multicentric study: group A consisted of patients with histologically-proven AAG (n = 13; 2 males, 11 females); group B fulfilled the criteria for group A but also had AT (n = 92; 15 males, 77 females); and group C included patients with AT and without AAG (n = 37; 6 males, 31 females).

A practical approach for PD-L1 evaluation in gastroesophageal cancer.

PD-L1 is an established predictive immunohistochemical biomarker of response to immune checkpoint inhibitors. At present, PD-L1 is routinely assessed on biopsy samples of advanced gastroesophageal cancer patients before initiating first-line treatment. However, PD-L1 is still a suboptimal biomarker, due to changing cut-off values and scoring systems, interobserver and interlaboratory variability.

Morphological and molecular characterization of colorectal sessile serrated lesions with dysplasia.

In sessile serrated lesions (SSLs) with adenomatous dysplasia, the dysplastic component and the serrated component without dysplasia should be considered as part of the same lesion, classified as SSL with dysplasia. However, some of these lesions may actually represent collisions between a serrated polyp and a conventional adenoma. Further supporting the "collision theory", conventional adenomatous dysplasia may be found in association with hyperplastic polyps (HPs).

Bactericidal/Permeability-Increasing Protein Downregulates the Inflammatory Response in In Vivo Models of Arthritis.

We investigated the effects of bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI) alone or in combination with hyaluronic acid (HA) in two animal models: collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) and crystal-induced inflammation. In CIA, mice were intraperitoneally injected with PBS, HA, or BPI plus or minus HA, twice a week for 2 months, and then euthanized to collect paw and blood. Arthritis was assessed in ankle joints by clinical and histological evaluation.

Summary: This review analyzes the preneoplastic neuroendocrine lesions of the gastro-entero-pancreatic tract, by adopting a coherent anatomical benchmark. In particular, the settings in which neuroendocrine precursor lesions represent well-recognized pathophysiological and morphological entities (with eventual molecular correlates) have been distinguished from the ones in which the nature of preneoplastic changes is still obscure.

Gastric metastases of breast cancer: Histopathological and molecular characterization of a single Institution case series.

It has recently been suggested that patients with low- and intermediate-risk DTC with a good response to treatment at one year could be followed up using only highly sensitive immunoassays for thyroglobulin (Tg). The aim of this study was to examine the serum Tg levels in a series of DTC patients with histologically proven persistent or recurrent diseases.

Basal and Calcium-Stimulated Procalcitonin for the Diagnosis of Medullary Thyroid Cancers: Lights and Shadows.

Background: Procalcitonin (proCt) was recently proposed as an alternative or in addition to calcitonin (Ct) in medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) diagnostics.

Methods: Serum basal Ct (bCt) and proCt (bproCt) levels were measured before surgery from a consecutive series of patients with (n=43) and without (n=75) MTC, retrospectively collected in Padua. Serum bproCt, bCt and stimulated proCt and Ct (sproCt and sCt) were measured in another consecutive series of 33 patients seen at three tertiary-level institutions undergoing a calcium stimulation test prior to surgery, 20 of them with a final diagnosis of MTC, and 13 with non-MTC nodular disease.

Silicon Nanowires: A Breakthrough for Thermoelectric Applications.

The potentialities of silicon as a starting material for electronic devices are well known and largely exploited, driving the worldwide spreading of integrated circuits. When nanostructured, silicon is also an excellent material for thermoelectric applications, and hence it could give a significant contribution in the fundamental fields of energy micro-harvesting (scavenging) and macro-harvesting. On the basis of recently published experimental works, we show that the power factor of silicon is very high in a large temperature range (from room temperature up to 900 K).

Epstein-Barr virus associated gastric dysplasia: a new rare entity?

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection characterizes a portion of gastric adenocarcinomas. However, since there is lack of evidence of EBV presence in pre-neoplastic lesions of gastric mucosa, the etiologic role of EBV in gastric carcinogenesis is still debated. We report an unusual case of an EBV-associated foveolar gastric dysplasia associated with a focus of EBV-positive low-grade tubular adenocarcinoma, arisen in the context of a lymphocytic-like (EBV-positive) gastritis.
