Organochlorides are a crucial class of electrophiles in organic synthesis. Here, we present a protocol for the cross-electrophile coupling of aryl chlorides with unactivated alkyl chlorides, facilitated by an iron/Bpin catalytic system. We describe steps for the coupling of aryl chlorides with alkyl chlorides, followed by purification of products.

The fungus Emericella sp. XL029 isolated from leaves of Panax notoginseng was investigated for agents with potential antibacterial and antifungal activities using a one strain-many compounds (OSMAC) strategy. Fifteen compounds, including seven undescribed structures, were obtained from this species.

Article Synopsis
  • - A new compound called capsulactone, a 4-hydroxy-α-pyrone, was isolated from an endophytic fungus (XL027) found in leaves.
  • - The structure and configuration of capsulactone were determined using spectroscopic data, computational methods, and comparisons with existing literature.
  • - Capsulactone showed weak antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant bacteria, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 100 μg/ml.

Two new prenylated indole diterpenoids, tolypocladins K and L (1 and 2), together with a known analog terpendole L (3), were isolated from the solid fermentation culture of a mine soil-derived fungus Tolypocladium sp. XL115. Their structures and relative configurations were determined by comprehensive spectroscopic data analysis, as well as by comparison of their NMR data with those related known compounds.

Two novel sesquiterpenoids with an unprecedented tricyclo[4,4,2,1]hendecane scaffold, namely emericellins A (1) and B (2) representing a new skeleton, were isolated from the liquid cultures of an endophytic fungus Emericella sp. XL 029 associated with the leaves of Panax notoginseng. Their structures and relative configurations were characterized by extensive spectroscopic methods.
