The GGGGCC hexanucleotide repeat expansion mutation in the chromosome 9 open reading frame 72 (C9orf72) gene is a major genetic cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia (C9ALS/FTD). In this study, we demonstrate that the zinc finger (ZF) transcriptional regulator Yin Yang 1 (YY1) binds to the promoter region of the planar cell polarity gene Fuzzy to regulate its transcription. We show that YY1 interacts with GGGGCC repeat RNA via its ZF and that this interaction compromises the binding of YY1 to the Fuzzy promoter sites, resulting in the downregulation of Fuzzy transcription.

Since most existing single-prototype clustering algorithms are unsuitable for complex-shaped clusters, many multi-prototype clustering algorithms have been proposed. Polyglutamine (polyQ) diseases, including spinocerebellar ataxias and Huntington's disease, are progressive neurodegenerative disorders caused by CAG triplet-repeat expansion in the coding regions of disease-associated genes. In this study, we found that neurotoxic small CAG (sCAG) RNA species, microscopic Ataxin-2 CAG RNA foci, and protein aggregates exist as independent entities in cells. Synaptic defects and neurite outgrowth abnormalities were observed in mutant Ataxin-2-expressing mouse primary cortical neurons.

Although polyurea has attracted extensive attention in impact mitigation due to its protective characteristics during intensive loading, the ballistic performance of polyurea-reinforced ceramic/metal armor remains unclear. In the present study, polyurea-reinforced ceramic/metal armor with different structures was designed, including three types of coating positions of the polyurea. The ballistic tests were conducted with a ballistic gun; the samples were subjected to a tungsten projectile formed into a cylinder 8 mm in diameter and 30 mm in length, and the deformation process of the tested targets was recorded with a high-speed camera.

Malic acid is a component of the rhizosphere exudate and is vital for crop growth. However, little information is available about the effects of external applications of malic acid on the nutrient absorption and quality of grape fruit, and few studies have been performed on the relationship between the changes in the rhizosphere microbial community and nutrient absorption and fruit quality of grapes after adding malic acid. Unlabelled: We have investigated the impact of reduced emissions due to COVID-19 lockdown measures in spring 2020 on air quality in Canada's four largest cities: Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Calgary. Observed daily concentrations of NO, PM, and O during a "pre-lockdown" period (15 February-14 March 2020) and a "lockdown" period (22 March-2 May 2020), when lockdown measures were in full force everywhere in Canada, were compared to the same periods in the previous decade (2010-2019). Higher-than-usual seasonal declines in mean daily NO were observed for the pre-lockdown to lockdown periods in 2020.

The efficient selectivity of heavy metal ions from wastewater is still challenging but gains great public attention in water treatment on a world scale. In this study, the novel disulfide cross-linked poly(methacrylic acid) iron oxide (FeO@S-S/PMAA) nanoparticles with selective adsorption, improved adsorption capability, and economic reusability were designed and prepared for selective adsorption of Pb(II) ions in aqueous solution. Identification of causal relations among variables is central to many scientific investigations, as in regulatory network analysis of gene interactions and brain network analysis of effective connectivity of causal relations between regions of interest.
