Background: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have shown abnormal functional connectivity (FC) of the insula (INS) in patients with musculoskeletal pain (MSP). However, there is a lack of consistency in previous studies, which is an obstacle to understanding the underlying neuropathology of MSP.

Method: Seven databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database, and Chongqing VIP, were systematically searched from inception to 15 May 2024.

Purpose: This study aimed to establish a nomogram combining 31-gene signature (31-GS), radiosensitivity index (RSI), and radiation-resistance-related gene index (RRRI) to predict recurrence in prostate cancer (PCa) patients.

Methods And Materials: Transcriptome data of PCa were obtained from gene expression omnibus and the cancer genome atlas to validate the predictive potential of 3 sets of published biomarkers, namely, 31-GS, RSI, and RRRI. To adjust these markers for the characteristics of PCa, we analyzed 4 PCa-associated radiosensitivity predictive indices based on 31-GS, RSI, and RRRI by the Cox analysis and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression analysis.

The oncogene MYC is one of the most commonly activated oncogenic proteins in human tumors, with nearly one-fourth of osteosarcoma showing MYC amplification and exhibiting the worst clinical outcomes. The clinical efficacy of single radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy for such osteosarcoma is poor, and the dysregulation of MYC amplification and immune-suppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) may be potential causes of anti-tumor failure. To address the above issues, we developed an injectable TME-responsive nanocomposite hydrogel to simultaneously deliver an effective MYC inhibitor (NHWD-870) and IL11Rα-targeted liposomes containing cisplatin-loaded MnO (Cis/Mn@Lipo-IL11).

Background: Cutaneous melanoma (CM) is strongly associated with ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which contributes to the transformation of melanocytes into melanoma by inducing specific DNA damage. Here, we investigated the causal relationship between CM and genes related to sun-damaged skin, exploring specific target genes through various bioinformatics analyses.

Methods: The Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database was used to obtain differential genes for CM and normal skin, and the Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) analysis offered summary-level melanoma data for CM.

Article Synopsis
  • Sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SADN) is a bioremediation method aimed at removing nitrates from contaminated water, but its efficiency is limited by the low availability of sulfur.
  • A proposed solution, the sulfur autotrophic disproportionation (SADP) process, effectively converts sulfur into biogenic sulfide, increasing the availability of electron donors necessary for SADN.
  • Laboratory tests showed that the combination of SADP and SADN significantly improved nitrate removal rates and reduced nitrous oxide emissions, making it a promising and sustainable approach for treating nitrate-contaminated water.

  • Pharmaceutical residues in sidestream wastewater can harm ecosystems and human health, making their removal crucial.
  • Research focused on how acetaminophen, a common drug, is degraded in this wastewater treatment process, finding that removal efficiency varies with nitrite and free nitrous acid (FNA) levels.
  • The study revealed that a significant portion of acetaminophen was removed through both abiotic processes and bacterial metabolism, and optimal FNA levels are key for effectively eliminating such pharmaceuticals from wastewater.

Dosing iron salts is a widely adopted strategy for sewer odor and corrosion management, and it can affect bioenergy recovery during anaerobic digestion (AD) of sludge in downstream wastewater treatment plants. However, the different impacts of in-sewer iron salt dosing on AD, depending on the types of iron and digestion conditions, remain unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of in-sewer ferrous (Fe(II)) and ferrate (Fe(VI)) dosing on bioenergy recovery in both conventional AD and AD with thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP).

Article Synopsis
  • The study revolves around enhancing the restoration of low-dose SPECT sinograms using a new neural network model called SCI-Net, which takes into account specific characteristics of sinograms to improve image quality.
  • SCI-Net employs innovative mechanisms such as channel and position attention modules to leverage continuity and capture correlations in sinograms, along with a multi-stage approach to maintain both local details and global structures during restoration.
  • Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of SCI-Net in restoring low-dose sinograms, showing significant improvements in image quality metrics like peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity (SSIM) compared to normal-dose references.

  • Acoustic wave technology allows for real-time, nondestructive assessment of coal reservoir properties critical for evaluating coalbed methane (CBM) production potential.
  • A study of 48 coal samples from Xinjiang, China, revealed that coal's acoustic wave characteristics, including velocity and dynamic elastic modulus, vary with bedding orientation and are influenced by factors like apparent density, porosity, and fractures.
  • The findings showed that perpendicular bedding coal samples have higher acoustic wave velocity and dynamic elastic modulus, while higher porosity and fractures decrease these values, leading to the development of regression equations to relate physical properties to acoustic wave behavior.

Important breakthroughs have recently been achieved in deep coalbed methane (CBM) exploration and development in regions such as the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin, China. Investigating the development characteristics of various-scale pores in deep coalbeds is of great significance for resource assessment and selection of favorable zones for CBM exploration. Herein, six deep coal samples were selected from the Shanxi and Taiyuan Formations in the Daning-Jixian block on the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin.

Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) hold significant promise for wastewater treatment, yet the persistent challenge of membrane fouling impedes their practical application. One promising solution lies in the synergy between microalgae and bacteria, offering efficient nutrient removal, reduced energy consumption, and potential mitigation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) concentrations. Inoculating microalgae presents a promising avenue to address membrane fouling in MBRs.

The performance of partial nitritation (PN)-moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) in removal of antibiotics in the sidestream wastewater has not been investigated so far. In this work, the removal of ciprofloxacin was assessed under varying free nitrous acid (FNA) levels and different trophic modes. For the first time, a positive correlation was observed between ciprofloxacin removal and FNA levels, either in the autotrophic PN-MBBR or in the mixotrophic PN-MBBR, mainly ascribed to the FNA-stimulating effect on heterotrophic bacteria (HB)-induced biodegradation.

  • Osteolysis from wear particles is a major cause of artificial joint revision surgeries, and understanding its mechanism is crucial for orthopedic solutions.
  • This study investigates how Angiopoietin (Ang-1) can inhibit osteoclast activation to reduce osteolysis, using models in mice to observe its effects on osteoclast formation and inflammatory response.
  • Findings suggest that Ang-1 not only suppresses osteoclastogenesis and calvarial osteolysis but also activates TBK-1 to mitigate inflammatory responses in macrophages, presenting a potential new therapy for addressing particle-induced osteolysis.
