Phosphorous-containing materials are used in a wide array of fields, from energy conversion and storage to heterogeneous catalysis and biomaterials. Among these materials, organic-inorganic metal phosphonate solids and thin films present an interesting option, due to their remarkable thermal and chemical stability. Yet, the synthesis of phosphonate hybrids by vapour phase thin film deposition techniques remains largely unexplored.

Background: Cervical cytology is recommended by WHO as a triage option in HPV-based cervical cancer screening programmes. We assessed the performance of cytology to detect CIN3+ without and with knowledge of HPV positivity.

Methods: Women were screened with cytology and HPV across ESTAMPA study centres in Latin America.

L-type voltage-gated calcium (Ca) channels (L-VGCC) dysfunction is implicated in several neurological and psychiatric diseases. While a popular therapeutic target, it is unknown whether molecular mechanisms leading to disrupted L-VGCC across neurodegenerative disorders are conserved. Importantly, L-VGCC integrate synaptic signals to facilitate a plethora of cellular mechanisms; however, mechanisms that regulate L-VGCC channel density and subcellular compartmentalization are understudied.

Women with a history of preeclampsia (PE) have a greater risk of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). In turn, pregnancy at high altitude is a risk factor for PE. However, whether women who develop PE during highland pregnancy are at risk of PAH before and after birth has not been investigated.

We hypothesized that fetal exposure to the oxidative stress induced by the combined challenge of preeclampsia (PE) and high altitude would induce a significant impairment in the development of pulmonary circulation. We conducted a prospective study in La Paz (Bolivia, mean altitude 3625 m) in which newborns from singleton pregnancies with and without PE were compared (PE group = 69, control = 70). We conducted an echocardiographic study in these infants at the median age of two days.

Ultra-violet (UV) light has still a limited scope in optical microscopy despite its potential advantages over visible light in terms of optical resolution and of interaction with a wide variety of biological molecules. The main challenge is to control in a robust, compact and cost-effective way UV light beams at the level of a single optical spatial mode and concomitantly to minimize the light propagation loss. To tackle this challenge, we present here photonic integrated circuits made of aluminum oxide thin layers that are compatible with both UV light and high-volume manufacturing.

Metastases from malignant tumors in the oral cavity are rare and comprise approximately 1% of all oral neoplasms, being more frequent in the jaws than in the soft tissues. The presentation of a gingival metastasis as the first manifestation of a primary tumor in the oral cavity is extremely rare. The objective of this review is to update the diagnosis and management of oral metastasis being the first clinical manifestation of the tumor and review all the cases published to date, providing a new original clinical case with very specific histopathological characteristics.

Background: DNA damage is accumulated in the cells over time as the result of both exogenous and endogenous factors. The objective of this study was to analyze the immunohistochemical expression of the repair proteins in oral leukoplakia (OL) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).

Materials And Methods: Paraffin blocks were selected from the archives of the Laboratory of Hospital Clinico Universitario de Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

In the quest for a more compact and cheaper Raman sensor, photonic integration and plasmonic enhancement are central. Nanoplasmonic slot waveguides exhibit the benefits of SERS substrates while being compatible with photonic integration and mass-scale (CMOS) fabrication. A difficulty in pursuing further integration of the Raman sensor with lasers, spectral filters, spectrometers and interconnecting waveguides lies in the presence of a photon background generated by the excitation laser field in any dielectric waveguide constituting those elements.

Alkaptonuria is an autosomal recessive inborn error of metabolism of the aromatic amino acids. Deficiency of the homogentisate1,2-dioxygenase leads to an increased blood and urinary concentration of homogentisc acid resulting in a slow accumulation of its oxidation products in the connective tissues (ochronosis). The most common clinical manifestation of ochronosis is arthropathy whereas cardiac involvement is very infrequent.

Introduction: Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing is replacing cytology in primary screening. Its limited specificity demands using a second (triage) test to better identify women at high-risk of cervical disease. Cytology represents the immediate triage but its low sensitivity might hamper HPV testing sensitivity, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), where cytology performance has been suboptimal.

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) represents 95% of all cancers of the head and neck region. The five-year survival rate of OSCC patients is about 60% and has not gone throw significant improvements despite recent advances in molecular biology, or the identification of key pathways in its pathophysiology such as cell cycle.

Objective: 1) to analyse the inmunoexpression of cell cycle checkpoints (CPs) in an OSCC institutional cohort and to relate it to clinicopathological features and survival, and 2) to study CPs-related genes in the OSCC subset of the TCGA database.

The study area is located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, among the municipalities of Pedro Leopoldo, Matozinhos, and Sete Lagoas, with Velhas River as the eastern boundary. It is located in the São Francisco Craton, where carbonated argillo-arenaceous sediments are emplaced giving origin to the Bambuí Group, in the São Francisco Basin. Despite the geological knowledge previously developed, the region needs work on integration and detailing of such information.

Vulvar lymphangioma circumscriptum (LC) is an unusual benign condition, congenital or acquired, related to interference in the lymph drainage. Acquired cases are usually related to oncological surgical procedures. We report 6 cases of vulvar LC: 3 have been caused by surgery and radiotherapy for gynecologic cancer, whereas the other 3 have originated under benign conditions--Crohn disease, recurring episodes of cellulits, and lower limb lymphedema.

Background: Aortic root enlargement has not been well studied as a modality to prevent patient prosthesis mismatch in octogenarian patients with a small aortic root.

Methods: We reviewed the records of 117 octogenarian patients who received surgical aortic valve replacement (AVR) between 1993 and 2010. From this group, 87 patients received a 19-mm AVR (small aortic valve, SAV group) and 30 received an aortic root enlargement and a 21-mm AVR (aortic root enlargement, ARE group).

The Hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP) is a preventive system which seeks to ensure food safety and security. It allows product protection and correction of errors, improves the costs derived from quality defects and reduces the final overcontrol. In this paper, the system is applied to the line of cultivation of mushrooms and other edible cultivated fungi.

Objectives: The CAPTURE study evaluated the accuracy of automated atrial and right ventricular (RV) threshold algorithms.

Background: Modern pacemakers include many added features designed to improve the ease of patient follow-up, as well as algorithms to reduce pacing outputs and/or reduce the atrial or ventricular pacing percentages, thus improving longevity.

Methods: Automated atrial and RV threshold measurements were assessed versus manual measurements at 6 months.

Background: Multinucleate cell angiohistiocytoma is an infrequent and most likely non-neoplastic disorder usually seen in acral regions in elderly women. It presents clinically as asymptomatic red-to-brown tumors, with a tendency to confluence. It must be distinguished from other diverse cutaneous lesions, notably dermatofibroma, Kaposi sarcoma, and angiofibroma.
