Main virulence factors in LIPI-1 include long 5' untranslated regions (5'UTRs), among which is Rli51, a small RNA (sRNA) in the 5'UTR of the Zn-metalloprotease-coding . So far, Rli51 function and molecular mechanisms have remained obscure.

Background: Meropenem is a widely prescribed beta-lactam for hospitalized patients. There are few data on meropenem allergy assessments in inpatients with a reported history of penicillin allergy who require a treatment with meropenem. This can lead to the use of less effective second-line antibiotics that may increase antibiotic resistances.

Background: Tramadol, a weak opioid, inhibits the reuptake of serotonin, a key feature on vascular homeostasis. A suspected interaction exists between dabigatran and tramadol, which might trigger an excess on risk of bleeding however, there is a gap in knowledge on this topic.

Purpose: To estimate the effects of tramadol, dabigatran and concomitant use on the risk of hospitalized major bleeds (Gastrointestinal bleeding and intra-extracranial bleeds).

Objective: To determine the frequency of and risk factors associated with adverse events among FLNCtv carriers compared with individuals carrying TTN truncating variants (TTNtv).

Design, Setting, And Participants: This cohort study recruited 167 consecutive FLNCtv carriers and a control cohort of 244 patients with TTNtv matched for left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) from 19 European cardiomyopathy referral units between 1990 and 2018.

Spanish list of potentially inappropriate drugs in the elderly (ES-PIA project).

Purpose: In the last decades, different criteria have been developed for detecting inappropriate prescription in older patients. In Spain, translations and adaptations of international lists are available but it would be necessary a national list which could cope with the peculiarities of our health system, existing pharmaceutical market, and prescription habits. We propose in this project the creation of a Spanish potentially inappropriate drugs list which could be applicable in our clinical scenario.

Surgical treatment of acute abdominal complications in hematology patients: outcomes and prognostic factors.

The decision to operate on hematology patients with abdominal emergencies can be difficult, as neutropenia and thrombocytopenia are common and the usual causes of abdominal pain are broad. We conducted a retrospective observational study including all hematology patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery between January 1998 and January 2013. Of the fifty-eight consecutive patients included in the study, nineteen (33%) underwent an operation during the neutropenia period.

[Knowledge of Andalusian pediatricians and parents about early-onset tooth decay].

Objectives: To determine the level of knowledge of pediatricians and parents from Andalucía (southern Spain) about early-onset tooth decay, and to assess if pediatricians provide information to parents about pediatric oral care and visits to the pediatric dentist.

Material And Method: A random sample of 113 pediatricians and 112 parents with children under 3 years of age received an anonymous questionnaire comprising 14 items for pediatricians and 16 items for parents, grouped into five blocks: visits to the dentist, oral hygiene, caries, nutritional habits, and treatment of caries. The chi-squared test was used to assess differences between groups.

Methods: We studied sera obtained from clinical analysis laboratories in Tangier and Tetuouan and from fishermen at Tangier port. The age of the study population ranged from 6 to 83 years.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the prevalence and presentations of developmental defects of the enamel (DDE) in the primary and permanent dentitions of a group of healthy schoolchildren residing in Granada (Spain).

Study Design: A total of 1,414 healthy schoolchildren were examined using modified DDE criteria for recording enamel defects.

Background: This study was performed to determine if a chemotherapy-induced apoptosis assay (MiCK) could predict the best therapy for patients with ovarian cancer.

Methods: A prospective, multi-institutional and blinded trial of the assay was conducted in 104 evaluable ovarian cancer patients treated with chemotherapy. The MiCK assay was performed prior to therapy, but treating physicians were not told of the results and selected treatment only on clinical criteria.

The microculture-kinetic (MiCK) assay: the role of a drug-induced apoptosis assay in drug development and clinical care.

A drug-induced apoptosis assay, termed the microculture-kinetic (MiCK) assay, has been developed. Blinded clinical trials have shown higher response rates and longer survival in groups of patients with acute myelocytic leukemia and epithelial ovarian cancer who have been treated with drugs that show high apoptosis in the MiCK assay. Unblinded clinical trials in multiple tumor types have shown that the assay will be used frequently by clinicians to determine treatment, and when used, results in higher response rates, longer times to relapse, and longer survivals.

The aim of this study was to update on resistance of Bacteroides fragilis group in our Institution with special attention to carbapenems reporting metallo-beta-lactamase producing strains for the first time in Spain, and to compare fingerprinting analysis results obtained by using automated rep-PCR (DiversiLab System) and MALDI-TOF MS.

Influence of the antioxidant content of saliva on dental caries in an at-risk community.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the relationship between the total antioxidant capacity of saliva and the presence of dental caries in deciduous and permanent teeth, in a group of Saharan children.

Methods: The dental examination was carried out in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO). The total antioxidant capacity of the saliva was determined by colorimetry.

Thiols, such as cysteine and N-acetylcysteine, are included in many pharmaceutical products for their mucolytic properties. The method described here uses mushroom polyphenol oxidase (PPO) to determine two thiols and consists of measuring the lag period in the formation of the product generated as PPO acts on o-diphenol in the presence of a thiol. In the experimental conditions, o-quinone is formed enzymatically and then reacts stoichiometrically with the thiol, originating the corresponding thiol-diphenol adduct, which does not absorb visible light.

Sigmoid impaction secondary to urinary stones: case report and review of literature.

Background: This is the first case report of a Miami pouch sigmoid fistula developing passage of urinary stones resulting in the presentation of constipation secondary to impaction.

Case Report: A 49-year-old woman who developed a recurrence of invasive squamous cell cervical carcinoma 1 year after pelvis radiation. She then underwent anterior pelvic exenteration and creation of a Miami pouch.
