The study evaluated microbial and Potentially Toxic Elements-PTEs risks in high Andean river water in Peru using Monte Carlo simulation. A total of 144 water samples were collected from four rivers and evaluated for physicochemical parameters, PTEs and bacterial pathogens. The microbial risk analysis for exposure to pathogens present in the water was based on the probability of occurrence of diseases associated with Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and enterococci.

Abandoned mining-metallurgical sites can significantly impact the environment and human health by accumulating heavy metals in aquatic ecosystems. The water in the sub-basin near an abandoned smelting facility in the city of La Oroya, Peru, is primarily used for pisciculture. The objective of this study was to assess the risk to human health from exposure to heavy metals via dietary intake of rainbow trout () in the influence area of a smelting facility located in the central Andean region of Peru.

The use of antibiotics in fish production can induce bacterial populations to develop resistance to multiple antibiotics and transfer antibiotic resistance genes to other bacteria, including clinically relevant bacteria. This study evaluated the diversity of Enterobacterales in sediment from lagoons with fish farming activity and analyzed antibiotic resistance in the central region of Peru. Sediment samples were collected from four fish-active ponds and transported to the laboratory for analysis.

Toxic metal contamination, distribution and risk were evaluated in the sediments of three lagoons used for fish farming in the central region of Peru. The distribution of toxic metals in the sediment was in the following descending order of Zn > V > Ni > Cu > Pb > As > Cr > Co > Cd > Sb. Contamination factor (Cf) and geoaccumulation index (I) values for Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb, V and Zn indicated low contamination and for Cd moderate contamination.

Biomaterial surface modification through the introduction of defined and repeated patterns of topography helps study cell behavior in response to defined geometrical cues. The lithographic molding technique is widely used for conferring biomaterial surface microscale cues and enhancing the performance of biomedical devices. In this work, different master molds made by UV mask lithography were used to prepare poly (D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) - PLGA micropatterned membranes to present different features of topography at the cellular interface: channels, circular pillars, rectangular pillars, and pits.

The cumulative effects of anthropogenic stress on freshwater ecosystems are becoming increasingly evident and worrisome. In lake sediments contaminated by heavy metals, the composition and structure of microbial communities can change and affect nutrient transformation and biogeochemical cycling of sediments. In this study, bacterial and archaeal communities of lake sediments under fish pressure contaminated with heavy metals were investigated by the Illumina MiSeq platform.

The contamination of water, air and soil with potentially toxic elements (PTE) compromises the supply of contaminant free food. Vegetables grown in contaminated soils can absorb and accumulate PTE at concentrations that are toxic to human health. In this context, the human risk associated with the intake of artichokes grown in soils irrigated with PTE contaminated water was assessed.

Soil quality is usually determined by its physical-chemical characteristics without taking into account the bacterial communities that play a fundamental role in the chemical decomposition of plant nutrients. In this context, the objective of the study was to evaluate bacterial diversity in high Andean grassland soils disturbed with Lepidium meyenii cultivation under different gradients of use (first, second and third use) and crop development (pre-sowing, hypocotyl development and post-harvest). The sampling was carried out in the Bombón plateau in the central Andes of Peru, during the rainy and low water seasons, by the systematic method based on a specific pattern assigned in a geometric rectangular shape at a depth of 0 - 20 cm.

The Marathon runners must have the proper technical preparation to reach excellence and to achieve adequate psychological preparation for the race. Against this background, the current study aims to describe the implementation results of a cognitive-behavioral intervention based on psychological skills training for marathon runners. Fourteen amateur male marathoners with an average age of 30 ( = 5.

Background: Data collection on noncommunicable disease (NCD) behavioral risk factors has traditionally been carried out through face-to-face surveys. However, its high costs and logistical difficulties can lead to lack of timely statistics for planning, particularly in low and middle-income countries. Mobile phone surveys (MPS) have the potential to fill these gaps.

This article contains data on the concentration of heavy metals and metalloids in the water of seven rivers in the Mantaro river watershed in the central Andes of Peru, collected during the autumn of 2019. The concentrations of Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn and As were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry to assess human risk. The concentration of heavy metals and arsenic varied according to the sector of the rivers evaluated.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) case detection in Peru relies on passive case finding. This strategy relies on the assumption that the community is aware that a persistent cough or contact with a TB patient is an indication to seek formal health care. This study evaluated health literacy and TB knowledge among outpatients at Hospital Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru.

Article Synopsis
  • Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) poses significant challenges in public health, particularly due to heteroresistance which complicates diagnosis and treatment strategies.
  • The study employed ultradeep next-generation sequencing on various TB isolates to investigate how subculturing impacts drug-resistant strains over time.
  • Findings revealed a notable loss of minor resistant variants during subculture, with some strains potentially misclassified as susceptible, while certain resistance variants appeared to become more prevalent under subculture conditions.

Introduction: Access to mental health services by people with mental disorders has traditionally been limited, and is associated with attitudinal, social, and structural variables.

Objective: To analyse the factors that determine access to mental health services by the adult population (18-44 years old) in Colombia, from the results obtained in the 2015 National Mental Health Survey.

Material And Methods: Analysis of variables of access to attention in mental health care for adults.

Objective: To analyze the behavior temporal of road-traffic injuries (RTI) in Valledupar, Colombia from January 2008 to December 2012.

Methodology: An observational study was conducted based on records from the Colombian National Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences Institute regional office in Valledupar. Different variables were analyzed, such as the injured person's sex, age, education level, and type of road user; the timeframe, place and circumstances of crashes and the vehicles associated with the occurrence.

Background: Timely detection of neurodevelopmental impairments in children can prompt referral for critical services that may prevent permanent disability. However, screening of impairments is a significant challenge in low-resource countries. We adapted and validated the rapid neurodevelopmental assessment (RNDA) instrument developed in Bangladesh to assess impairment in nine domains: primitive reflexes, gross and fine motor development, vision, hearing, speech, cognition, behaviour and seizures.

Physician-pharmacist collaborative care (PPCC) is effective in improving blood pressure (BP) control, but primary care provider (PCP) engagement in such models has not been well-studied. The authors analyzed data from PPCC referrals to 108 PCPs, for patients with uncontrolled hypertension, assessing the proportion of referral requests approved, disapproved, and not responded to, and reasons for disapproval. Of 2232 persons with uncontrolled hypertension, PPCC referral requests were sent for 1516 (67.

Low birth weight is associated with exposure to air pollution during pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether null polymorphisms of Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), specifically GSTM1 and GSTT1 genes in infants or mothers, modify the association between high exposures to household air pollution (HAP) from cooking fires and birth weight. Pregnant women in rural Guatemala were randomized to receive a chimney stove or continue to use open fires for cooking.

Background: Adjustment for differing risks among patients is usually incorporated into newer payment approaches, and current risk models rely on age, sex, and diagnosis codes. It is unknown the extent to which controlling additionally for disease severity improves cost prediction. Failure to adjust for within-disease variation may create incentives to avoid sicker patients.
