Overusing blood cultures (BCxs) can lead to false positives, unnecessary antibiotics and increased healthcare costs. Despite studies on inpatient BCx algorithms, none have focused on cardiothoracic surgery (CTS) patients, with complex postoperative care and invasive devices. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a BCx algorithm on BCx event (BCE) rates in CTS step-down units.

Toxoplasma gondii infection has been documented in many avian species, however, there is little information regarding free-living seabird populations. Leptospira can infect domestic and wild animals, with birds being potential carriers of the bacteria.

The present study evaluates the association between histopathological findings and the results of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in clinically suspected cases of CL.
Methodology: Skin samples were received in a laboratory from an endemic region of Brazil for over nine years.
Pathogenic variants in solute carrier family 34, member 3 (SLC34A3), the gene encoding the sodium-dependent phosphate cotransporter 2c (NPT2c), cause hereditary hypophosphatemic rickets with hypercalciuria (HHRH). Here, we report a pooled analysis of clinical and laboratory records of 304 individuals from 145 kindreds, including 20 previously unreported HHRH kindreds, in which two novel SLC34A3 pathogenic variants were identified. Compound heterozygous/homozygous carriers show above 90% penetrance for kidney and bone phenotypes.

Background: Leishmania RNA virus 1 (LRV1) is commonly found in South American Leishmania parasites belonging to the subgenus Viannia, whereas Leishmania RNA virus 2 (LRV2) was previously thought to be restricted to the Old-World pathogens of the subgenus Leishmania.
Objectives: In this study, we investigated the presence of LRV2 in strains of Leishmania (L.) infantum, the causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), originating from different hosts, clinical forms, and geographical regions.
Background: Pressure injuries are associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and cost. Patients with delayed sternal closure after cardiac surgery are at increased risk of developing pressure injury because of their reduced mobility and inability to undergo complete skin assessment.
Local Problem: Safe patient handling of patients with delayed sternal closure is challenging because of mobility restrictions, leading to increased risk for patient and staff harm.
Leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease with worldwide distribution. In the Americas, the causative agent of the visceral form is the protozoa Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum. Transmission to the host or vertebrate reservoir occurs through the bite of infected arthropod females like Lutzomyia longipalpis.

Here we describe the realization of a compact laser system for atomic gravimetry. Starting with a single diode laser operating at 780 nm and adding only one fiber electro-optical modulator, one acousto-optical modulator and one laser amplifier we produce laser beams at all the frequencies required for a Rb-87 atomic gravimeter.

This study aimed to determine the pathological and molecular aspects of an outbreak of fatal systemic toxoplasmosis in finishing pigs in Brazil. The outbreak occurred on a commercial finishing pig farm in the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil.

Cardiac cine-MRI is one of the most important diagnostic tools for characterizing heart-related pathologies. This imaging technique allows clinicians to assess the morphology and physiology of the heart during the cardiac cycle. Nonetheless, the analysis on cardiac cine-MRI is highly dependent on the observer expertise and a high inter-reader variability is frequently observed.

Genetic studies performed in consanguineous couples suggest that the reproductive risk that distinguish them from other couples in the general population is related to autosomal recessive (AR) diseases. This risk is scattered among the thousands of known and potential AR diseases. Thus, for effective preconceptional screening of consanguineous couples it is necessary a test that encompasses the largest number of genes possible.

Healthy work environments are associated with improved nurse satisfaction and retention as well as positive patient outcomes; unhealthy work environments have the opposite effects.
