Social housing provides a high level of enrichment for captive non-human primates, but providing this in research situations can be challenging. We have developed a multifactorial animal selection and introduction process coordinated by veterinary and animal care behavioral teams. This process sought to successfully establish lasting same-sex pairs and trios for African green monkeys () in studies lasting from three months to over a year.

Adverse event investigations occur after adverse events that resulted in death or severe injury. Few studies have focused on patient perspectives on their involvement in such investigations.

Stream water quality can be impacted by a myriad of fecal pollution sources and waste management practices. Identifying origins of fecal contamination can be challenging, especially in high order streams where water samples are influenced by pollution from large drainage areas. Strategic monitoring of tributaries can be an effective strategy to identify conditions that influence local water quality.

The comparison of decay rates of infectious SARS-CoV-2 and viral RNA in environmental waters and wastewater.

Understanding the decay characteristics of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in wastewater and ambient waters is important for multiple applications including assessment of risk of exposure associated with handling wastewater samples, public health risk associated with recreation in wastewater polluted ambient waters and better understanding and interpretation of wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) results. We evaluated the decay rates of infectious SARS-CoV-2 and viral RNA in wastewater and ambient waters under temperature regimes representative of seasonal fluctuations. Infectious virus was seeded in autoclaved primary wastewater effluent, final dechlorinated wastewater effluent, lake water, and marine water at a final concentration of 6.

While seeking help may be beneficial, not every victim seeks help. Little research has been conducted on IBSHA victims' help-seeking behavior.

Background: Patients from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds are underserved in randomised controlled trials, yet they experience a much greater burden of disease compared with patients from socioeconomically advantaged areas. It is crucial to make trials more inclusive to ensure that treatments and interventions are safe and effective in real-world contexts. Improving how information about trials is verbally communicated is an unexplored strategy to make trials more inclusive.

Improved virus concentration methods for wash waters from decontamination of permeable and non-permeable surfaces.

Surface decontamination is a method of using wash water to decontaminated surfaces preventing transmission of biological contaminants that can pose potential health risks to responders and the public. However, the risks associated with handling used wash water are largely unknown due to the lack of effective methodology to screen for pathogenic microorganisms present in these samples, especially viral pathogens. This study adapted the dead-end hollow-fiber ultrafiltration (D-HFUF) system to wash waters, including a separate procedure for recovering particle attached viruses.

Assessment of two volumetrically different concentration approaches to improve sensitivities for SARS-CoV-2 detection during wastewater monitoring.

Wastewater monitoring for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for the global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, has highlighted the need for methodologies capable of assessing viral prevalence during periods of low population infection. To address this need, two volumetrically different, methodologically similar concentration approaches were compared for their abilities to detect viral nucleic acid and infectious SARS-CoV-2 signal from primary influent samples. For Method 1, 2 L of SARS-CoV-2 seeded wastewater was evaluated using a dead-end hollow fiber ultrafilter (D-HFUF) for primary concentration, followed by the CP Select™ for secondary concentration.

Effects of Music Volume Preference on Endurance Exercise Performance.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of preferred versus non-preferred music volume on relative power output, trial time to completion (TTC), heart rate (HR), rate of perceived exertion (RPE), and motivation during endurance rowing exercise. Physically active females (age 18−25) volunteered to participate. In a crossover counterbalanced design, participants completed two trials: non-preferred (NPV) and preferred (PV) music volume.

Recent legislation in the Netherlands has established medical dispute committees to provide for an appeals procedure offering an alternative to civil litigation and to meet the needs of clients. Dispute committees incorporate a hybrid procedure where one can file a complaint and a claim for damages resulting in a verdict without going to court.

Objective: This study aimed to provide an overview of the strategies adopted by hospitals that target effective communication and nonmaterial restoration (i.e., without a financial or material focus) after health care incidents, and to formulate elements in hospital strategies that patients consider essential by analysing how patients have evaluated these strategies.

Topic: Currently, research into the key elements and role of peer support in the aftermath of victimization is limited. This study reviews the types of evidence available, clarifying key concepts in the literature, examining how research is conducted and identifying key characteristics or factors related to peer support in the aftermath of a victimization experience.

Method: A scoping review was performed for peer-reviewed papers using predefined search terms.

Performance evaluation of a dead-end hollowfiber ultrafiltration method for enumeration of somatic and F+ coliphage from recreational waters.

Dead-end hollow fiber ultrafiltration combined with a single agar layer assay (D-HFUF-SAL) has potential use in the assessment of sanitary quality of recreational waters through enumeration of coliphage counts as measures of fecal contamination. However, information on applicability across a broad range of sites and water types is limited. Here, we tested the performance of D-HFUF-SAL on 49 marine and freshwater samples.

Development of a large volume concentration method for recovery of coronavirus from wastewater.

We report the draft genome sequences of seven serogroup 1 isolates from hot water lines of a large building. Genomic analysis identified the isolates as belonging to sequence type 1.

There is established evidence that cytotoxic CD8 T cells are important mediators of immunity against the bovine intracellular protozoan parasite However, the mechanism by which the specific CD8 T cells kill parasitized cells is not understood. Although the predominant pathway used by human and murine CD8 T cells to kill pathogen-infected cells is granule exocytosis, involving the release of perforin and granzyme B, there is to date a lack of published information on the biological activities of bovine granzyme B. The present study set out to define the functional activities of bovine granzyme B and determine its role in mediating the killing of -parasitized cells.

One rule for the goose, one for the gander? Wrongfulness and harmfulness in determining reactions to offenders and victims of crime.

People's reactions to offenders and victims of crime follow different rationales. Whereas the punishment of the offender is primarily determined by the severity of the crime (which includes its foreseeable harmful consequences), the actual harm that is experienced by the victim drives the need for his or her support and assistance. With the introduction of the Victim Impact Statement (VIS), in which victims are allowed to express the (harmful) consequences of the crime on their lives, the question is raised whether allowing such victim input during criminal proceedings would influence the offender's sentence.
