Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how different light conditions (using diffuse vs. clear plastic covers) and nitrogen levels affect the yield and quality of cherry tomatoes grown in greenhouses.
  • The results showed that a diffuse light film (Film1) generally led to higher yields compared to a clear film (Film2), particularly at reduced nitrogen doses, and the application of biostimulants enhanced fruit quality and yield.
  • Overall, the combination of optimal light and biostimulants can significantly improve tomato production, suggesting a potential strategy for maximizing greenhouse yields.

The use of two nozzle diameters (6 and 8 mm) in a cold (50°C) hemp seed oil extraction process was evaluated in terms of extraction efficiency, and chemical composition and fermentation characteristics of the residual cake. Seeds of the varieties Futura 75 and Uso 31 were pressed using a mechanical press with a cooling device. Five pressings were carried out for each variety and nozzle size, the functional parameters of the extraction processes were recorded, and sample of the residual cakes ( = 20) were analyzed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the completion rate of the London Measure of Unplanned Pregnancy (LMUP) during antenatal visits in Sydney, focusing on socio-demographics linked to unplanned pregnancies.
  • Out of 4,993 women, only 47.8% completed the LMUP, with 70.6% indicating their pregnancies were planned, though many (59.1%) hadn't taken health actions before pregnancy.
  • Planned pregnancies were more prevalent in older women, while those with more prior births were more likely to experience unplanned pregnancies.

Background: Few studies in the literature have analyzed the long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes of the administration of a multicomponent versus a soybean-based lipid emulsion (LE) in preterm infants receiving parenteral nutrition (PN). A recent randomized controlled trial conducted in our unit provided evidence of better growth in head circumference during the hospital stay in those who received a multicomponent LE.

Methods: This is a 24 month follow-up study of preterm infants, previously enrolled in a randomized trial, who received a multicomponent LE (SMOFlipid) or a standard soybean-based one (Intralipid).

Background: Pregnancy planning and preconception care benefit women, their children, and future generations. The London Measure of Unplanned Pregnancy (LMUP) is a tool that can be used in antenatal care to identify women with unintended pregnancies who require improved access to such services. This tool was recently implemented into routine antenatal care in two maternity centres in New South Wales, Australia.

In this work, we compare nanoaggregation driven by pH-induced micellization (PIM) and by the standard solvent displacement (SD) method on a series of pH-, light-, and thermosensitive amphiphilic block copolymers. Specifically, we investigate poly(HIABMA)--poly(OEGMA) and poly(HIABMA)--poly(DEGMA--OEGMA), where HIABMA = [(hydroxyimino)aldehyde]butyl methacrylate, OEGMA = oligo(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate, and DEGMA = di(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate. The weakly acidic HIA group (p ≈ 8) imparts stability to micelles at neutral pH, unlike most of the pH-responsive copolymers investigated in the literature.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the impact of maternal colonization of specific species during pregnancy on the neurodevelopment of preterm infants born before 30 weeks of gestation.
  • - In a cohort of 254 preterm infants, only 12.6% were exposed to maternal colonization, showing no significant difference in overall developmental scores at 24 months but poorer locomotor abilities in the exposed group.
  • - Despite similar rates of cognitive and motor impairments between the two groups, the exposed infants had lower scores specifically in locomotor skills, indicating potential negative effects of maternal colonization on movement development.

By sequencing autozygous human populations, we identified a healthy adult woman with lifelong complete knockout of (expected ~1 in 30 million outbred people). (glycolate oxidase) silencing is the mechanism of lumasiran, an investigational RNA interference therapeutic for primary hyperoxaluria type 1. Her plasma glycolate levels were 12 times, and urinary glycolate 6 times, the upper limit of normal observed in healthy reference individuals (n = 67).

Objective: Low-dose aspirin (LDA) therapy has been found to be effective in preventing the development of early-onset preeclampsia. However, its effect on late-onset preeclampsia has not been described. Our study was aimed at determining if LDA therapy prescribed from early in pregnancy modified the severity of late-onset preeclampsia.

Lipin-1 is a Mg-dependent phosphatidic acid phosphatase (PAP) that in mice is necessary for normal glycerolipid biosynthesis, controlling adipocyte metabolism, and adipogenic differentiation. Mice carrying inactivating mutations in the gene display the characteristic features of human familial lipodystrophy. Very little is known about the roles of lipin-1 in human adipocyte physiology.

Background: Medical management of miscarriage allows women to avoid the risks associated with surgical intervention. In 2011 the early pregnancy assessment service (EPAS) at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) in Sydney, Australia introduced medical management of miscarriage with single-dose 800 μg vaginal misoprostol.

Aims: We sought to investigate the impact of the introduction of medical management had on the proportion of women having surgery and conservative management and to examine the success and complication rates of medical management.

Article Synopsis
  • Upper gastrointestinal bleeding poses significant risks for health, particularly in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis.
  • There is ongoing debate about whether alcohol directly causes gastropathy or if it is more related to complications from cirrhotic portal hypertension.
  • An autopsy report on a 53-year-old cirrhotic patient highlights the serious impact of alcohol on the stomach lining, suggesting a need to reconsider the underlying reasons for gastric bleeding in these cases.

Background: A relationship between maternal weight and unintended pregnancy has previously been reported. Researchers have found women who are overweight and obese women are less likely to use contraception, and more likely to have unplanned pregnancies, thus limiting their ability to optimise their health before conception.

Aims: This study sought to examine the relationship between pregnancy intention and body mass index (BMI) amongst women attending a service managing early pregnancy complications.

Background: This study addresses a recurrent biological problem, that is to define a formal clustering structure for a set of tissues on the basis of the relative abundance of multiple alternatively spliced isoforms mRNAs generated by the same gene. To this aim, we have used a model-based clustering approach, based on a finite mixture of multivariate Gaussian densities. However, given we had more technical replicates from the same tissue for each quantitative measurement, we also employed a finite mixture of linear mixed models, with tissue-specific random effects.

Even if the rupture is the most common cause of death of patients with Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) and the risk increases with the presence and the size of IntraLuminal Thrombosis (ILT), there are cases in which death occurs for other causes. The Authors present an autoptic report of considerable size AAA with ILT in a patient who died by heart failure due to CAD thrombotic and ischemic heart disease. A protective role of approved in the literature and the role of products resulting from the thrombotic formation could explain the death event.
