Objective: Our objective was to assess trends in three sexually transmitted infections (STIs) - gonorrhoea, chlamydia and syphilis - in Spain, by age group and sex from 2016 to 2022.

Study Design: Retrospective observational study.

Methods: Data from epidemiological surveillance system were used to calculate the incidence rate for each STIs by age group and sex.

In May 2022, the first monkeypox transmission chains were detected outside endemic countries. This outbreak presents clinical and epidemiological characteristics different from those observed in previous outbreaks, with a greater impact among the group of men who have sex with other men. The approach of epidemic outbreaks that requires interventions on communities or populations at risk of stigmatization is a major public health challenge.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the fatality rates associated with different serotypes of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in Madrid from 2007 to 2020, focusing on identifying which serotypes contributed most to mortality.
  • 25 pneumococcal serotypes were linked to deaths, with serotypes 3, 8, 11A, and 19A showing the highest case-fatality rates, while serotypes like 1 and 5 had lower mortality rates despite being common.
  • The findings highlight serotypes 3 and 11A as particularly concerning due to their high fatality rates and prevalence, indicating a need for targeted public health strategies.

Article Synopsis
  • The evaluation assesses the impact of Spain's Strategic Plan for Tackling Hepatitis C on hospitalizations related to chronic HCV from 2014 to 2018.
  • A total of 22,352 chronic HCV-related hospitalizations were recorded, with significant declines observed in national hospitalization rates—22% for all chronic cases and up to 34% for advanced liver disease between 2016-2018 compared to 2014.
  • While many regions saw over a 20% decrease in hospitalization rates, differences remained between urban and rural areas, indicating varying levels of success across the country.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a widely distributed tick-borne disease. In Spain, the disease has emerged as outbreak associated with high-risk exposures. Our goal was to evaluate the prevalence of antibodies against the CCHF virus (CCHFV) in high-risk contacts.

Introduction: This work evaluates the burden and trends of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-associated hospitalisations in Spain before and after the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Tackling Hepatitis C in the National Health System in 2015.

Methods: HCV-related hospitalisation discharges from 2005 to 2017 were obtained from the National Registry of Hospitalisations. A descriptive analysis of the hospitalisations was performed.

Background: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) have the potential to prevent pneumococcal disease through direct and indirect protection. This multicentre European study estimated the indirect effects of 5-year childhood PCV10 and/or PCV13 programmes on invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in older adults across 13 sites in 10 European countries, to support decision-making on pneumococcal vaccination policies.

Methods: For each site we calculated IPD incidence rate ratios (IRR) in people aged ≥65 years by serotype for each PCV10/13 year (2011-2015) compared with 2009 (pre-PCV10/13).

Article Synopsis
  • Chickenpox is a contagious disease, with the study focusing on the effects of a single-dose varicella vaccine given at 15 months, analyzing data from Madrid between 2001 and 2015.
  • The research utilized multiple data sources to assess the relative risk of chickenpox incidence and determine vaccine effectiveness (VE), revealing a significant reduction in cases.
  • Results indicated the vaccine's effectiveness was notable, with an overall VE of 76.7% from screening and 92.4% from a case-control study, confirming the vaccination's high impact.

Article Synopsis
  • The Spanish Health Information System (HIS) collects health data but lacks comprehensive information on transgender individuals, leading to their invisibility in health statistics.
  • A review of 19 sources found that while all included the variable "sex," none included "gender identity," which limits data on the health status of trans individuals.
  • The lack of adequate data on gender identity hinders understanding of health care access barriers and the specific health needs of trans individuals, who face significant discrimination.

This study describes the process of developing an instrument intended for use in assessing satisfaction with the quality of training in preventive medicine and public health for resident physicians. To develop this instrument, the National Survey of Satisfaction with Medical Residency was adapted by an expert panel consisting of 23 resident physicians in preventive medicine and public health belonging to 9 autonomous communities in Spain. The adaptation of the survey to the specialty rotations included new dimensions and items and was evaluated with a 5-point Likert scale.

Europe's first Ebola virus disease (EVD) case was diagnosed in our hospital. There was an unjustified panic in the population because of an imbalance of credibility assigned to the media as opposed to scientific information. A reinforcement of hospital internal communication was needed to keep health care workers informed with up-to-date scientific EVD information.

Background: In recent decades there has been a significant increase in waste generation. Training interventions in advanced health care waste management can improve the segregation of regulated medical waste and reduce volume and costs.

Methods: We carried out a quasi-experimental intervention study with before and after training session analysis to compare waste segregation.
