Does exposure to a radiofrequency electromagnetic field modify thermal preference in juvenile rats?

Some studies have shown that people living near a mobile phone base station may report sleep disturbances and discomfort. Using a rat model, we have previously shown that chronic exposure to a low-intensity radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) was associated with paradoxical sleep (PS) fragmentation and greater vasomotor tone in the tail. Here, we sought to establish whether sleep disturbances might result from the disturbance of thermoregulatory processes by a RF-EMF.

Autonomic symptoms in idiopathic REM behavior disorder: a multicentre case-control study.

Patients with idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) are at very high risk of developing neurodegenerative synucleinopathies, which are disorders with prominent autonomic dysfunction. Several studies have documented autonomic dysfunction in iRBD, but large-scale assessment of autonomic symptoms has never been systematically performed. Patients with polysomnography-confirmed iRBD (318 cases) and controls (137 healthy volunteers and 181 sleep center controls with sleep diagnoses other than RBD) were recruited from 13 neurological centers in 10 countries from 2008 to 2011.

The dichotomous pattern of IL-12r and IL-23R expression elucidates the role of IL-12 and IL-23 in inflammation.

IL-12 and IL-23 cytokines respectively drive Th1 and Th17 type responses. Yet, little is known regarding the biology of these receptors. As the IL-12 and IL-23 receptors share a common subunit, it has been assumed that these receptors are co-expressed.

Comorbidity and medication in REM sleep behavior disorder: a multicenter case-control study.

Objective: This controlled study investigated associations between comorbidity and medication in patients with polysomnographically confirmed idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD), using a large multicenter clinic-based cohort.

Methods: Data of a self-administered questionnaire on comorbidity and medication use of 318 patients with iRBD and 318 matched controls were analyzed. Comparisons between cases and controls were made using logistic regression analysis.

Follow-up of infants diagnosed with HIV - Early Infant Diagnosis Program, Francistown, Botswana, 2005-2012.

The 2011 prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among pregnant women in Botswana was 30.4%. High coverage rates of HIV testing and antiretroviral prophylaxis have reduced the rate of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in Botswana from as high as 40% with no prophylaxis to <4% in 2011.

Prevalence of glaucoma in hospitalized older adults with Alzheimer's disease.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of glaucoma in older adults with dementia of the alzheimer's type (DAT).

Methods: retrospective chart review: the prevalence of glaucoma was determined in older adults with a diagnosis of DAT or mixed dementia (DAT with vascular contribution) admitted to the geriatric and neurology units of the Centre hospitalier de l'université de Montréal and the hôpital Maisonneuve-rosemont between april 2008 and april 2009 (n=220; DAT group). they were matched for age and date of hospitalisation to the first 220 individuals without dementia (control group) recruited from other medical units in the same hospitals: gastroenterology, internal medicine or cardiology.

Overexpression of gastric leptin precedes adipocyte leptin during high-fat diet and is linked to 5HT-containing enterochromaffin cells.

Objectives: In obesity, while hyperleptinemia highly correlates with excess fat mass, the status of gastric leptin remains unknown. Here, we investigated the expression of leptin in stomach biopsies of obese humans and analyzed the temporal changes of gastric leptin expression in response to diet-induced obesity and its impact on 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT)-producing cells.

Methods: Enterochromaffin (EC) cells and expression of leptin, PAX4 (critical factor for EC specification), tryptophane hydroxylase-1 (TPH1, the peripheral rate-limiting enzyme for 5HT) and 5HT were examined by immunofluorescence, quantitative real-time PCR, radioimmunoassay, respectively, in stomach and duodenum biopsies from 19 obese and 14 normo-weighed individuals, and in mucosa scrapings from C57Bl6/J diet-induced obese mice, leptin-deficient ob/ob mice and intestine-specific leptin receptor isoform B-deficient mice.

Balloon against Jackhammer Disorder.

We describe a patient with dysphagia. The results of endoscopy, CT scan and echoendoscopy were normal. High-resolution manometry (HRM) showed esogastric junction dysfunction and hypercontractile peristaltic disorder.

Grassroots projects aimed at the built environment: Association with neighbourhood deprivation, land-use mix and injury risk to road users.

Objectives: 1) To describe grassroots projects aimed at the built environment and associated with active transportation on the Island of Montreal; and 2) to examine associations between the number of projects and indicators of neighbourhood material and social deprivation and the built environment.

Method: We identified funding agencies and community groups conducting projects on built environments throughout the Island of Montreal. Through website consultation and a snowballing procedure, we inventoried projects that aimed at transforming built environments and that were carried out by community organizations between January 1, 2006, and November 1, 2010.

Structural hippocampal network alterations during healthy aging: a multi-modal MRI study.

While hippocampal atrophy has been described during healthy aging, few studies have examined its relationship with the integrity of White Matter (WM) connecting tracts of the limbic system. This investigation examined WM structural damage specifically related to hippocampal atrophy in healthy aging subjects (n = 129), using morphological MRI to assess hippocampal volume and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) to assess WM integrity. Subjects with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or dementia were excluded from the analysis.

Idd13 is involved in determining immunoregulatory DN T-cell number in NOD mice.

Immunoregulatory T cells have been identified as key modulators of peripheral tolerance and participate in preventing autoimmune diseases. CD4(-)CD8(-) (double negative, DN) T cells compose one of these immunoregulatory T-cell subsets, where the injection of DN T cells confers protection from autoimmune diabetes progression. Interestingly, genetic loci defining the function and number of CD4(+)CD25(+)Foxp3(+) regulatory T cells (Tregs) coincide with at least some autoimmune disease susceptibility loci.

Striatal abnormalities and spontaneous dyskinesias in non-clinical psychosis.

Background: Accumulating evidence suggests that individuals experiencing non-clinical psychosis (NCP) represent a critical group for improving understanding of etiological factors underlying the broader psychosis continuum. Although a wealth of evidence supports widespread neural dysfunction in formal psychosis, there has been little empirical evidence to inform our understanding of putative vulnerability markers or brain structure in NCP. In this study, we examined the neural correlates of spontaneous movement abnormalities, a biomarker previously detected in NCP that is linked to abnormalities in the striatal dopamine.

Autologous immediate cranioplasty with vascularized bone in high-risk composite cranial defects.

Background: Composite cranial defects in the setting of infection, irradiation, or cerebrospinal fluid leak present a significant risk for devastating neurologic sequelae. Such defects require soft-tissue coverage and skeletal reconstruction that can withstand the hostile environment of a precarious wound.

Methods: Patients with high-risk composite cranial defects treated with free flap reconstruction containing a vascularized osseous component from 2003 to 2012 were reviewed retrospectively.

It is essential to know the types of contrast agents, their risks, contraindications, and common clinical scenarios in which contrast-enhanced computed tomography is appropriate. Many types of contrast agents can be used in computed tomography: oral, intravenous, rectal, and intrathecal.

Microbial contents of vacuum cleaner bag dust and emitted bioaerosols and their implications for human exposure indoors.

Vacuum cleaners can release large concentrations of particles, both in their exhaust air and from resuspension of settled dust. However, the size, variability, and microbial diversity of these emissions are unknown, despite evidence to suggest they may contribute to allergic responses and infection transmission indoors. This study aimed to evaluate bioaerosol emission from various vacuum cleaners.

Identification of potent and orally bioavailable nucleotide competing reverse transcriptase inhibitors: in vitro and in vivo optimization of a series of benzofurano[3,2-d]pyrimidin-2-one derived inhibitors.

Recently, a new class of HIV reverse transcriptase (HIV-RT) inhibitors has been reported. The novel mechanism of inhibition by this class involves competitive binding to the active site of the RT enzyme and has been termed Nucleotide-Competing Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NcRTIs). In this publication we describe the optimization of a novel benzofurano[3,2-d]pyrimidin-2-one series of NcRTIs.

Family history of idiopathic REM behavior disorder: a multicenter case-control study.

Objective: To compare the frequency of proxy-reported REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) among relatives of patients with polysomnogram-diagnosed idiopathic RBD (iRBD) in comparison to controls using a large multicenter clinic-based cohort.

Methods: A total of 316 patients with polysomnography-confirmed iRBD were recruited from 12 RBD study group centers, along with 316 controls matched on sex and age group. All subjects completed a self-administered questionnaire that collected proxy-reported information on family history of tremor, gait trouble, balance trouble, Parkinson disease, memory loss, and Alzheimer disease.

The Idd13 congenic interval defines the number of merocytic dendritic cells, a novel trait associated with autoimmune diabetes susceptibility.

When antigens derived from apoptotic cells are presented by conventional dendritic cells (cDC), T cell tolerance is induced. Surprisingly, the presentation of apoptotic cell antigens by an unconventional DC subset, termed merocytic dendritic cells (mcDC), can reverse T cell anergy. The potency of mcDC at breaking T cell tolerance has been demonstrated in the context of tumors and autoimmunity, suggesting that modulating the number of mcDC in vivo may be of clinical interest.

Improvement of enzyme transport in wood chips for thermomechanical pulp refining.

Wood chips, macerated wood chips and coarse wood fibers were compressed and allowed to decompress in enzyme solutions prior to mechanical refining. Electrical consumption in refining was monitored in order to investigate potential energy savings during refining. Wood treated with Celluclast(®) 1.

Here, we aimed to identify Rac activators that could promote metastasis downstream of human epithelial growth factor receptor 2 (HER2).

Doxepin and cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia in patients with Parkinson's disease -- a randomized study.

Introduction: Although a variety of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments are effective for insomnia in the general population, insomnia in Parkinson's disease differs in important ways and may need different treatments. No studies have conclusively demonstrated effective insomnia treatments in Parkinson's disease.

Methods: We conducted a three-arm six-week randomized pilot study assessing non-pharmacologic treatment (cognitive behavioural therapy with bright light therapy) or doxepin (10 mg daily), compared to an inactive placebo in Parkinson's patients with insomnia.

Prodromal autonomic symptoms and signs in Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies.

Pathologic staging systems suggest that autonomic dysfunction may be an early manifestation of Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. However, direct evidence is limited, and no prospective studies have measured when autonomic dysfunction starts before disease. Patients with idiopathic rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder are at very high risk of developing neurodegenerative synucleinopathy, providing an opportunity to directly observe the development of autonomic dysfunction from prodromal stages of neurodegeneration.

Identification and characterization of a novel HIV-1 nucleotide-competing reverse transcriptase inhibitor series.

Several groups have recently reported on the identification of nucleotide-competing reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NcRTIs), a new class of RT inhibitors. NcRTIs reversibly inhibit binding of the incoming nucleotide to the RT active site but do not act as chain terminators, unlike the nucleos(t)ide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) class. We identified a novel benzo[4,5]furo[3,2,d]pyrimidin-2-one NcRTI chemical series.

Nucleotide competing reverse transcriptase inhibitors: discovery of a series of non-basic benzofurano[3,2-d]pyrimidin-2-one derived inhibitors.

A HTS screen led to the identification of a benzofurano[3,2-d]pyrimidin-2-one core structure which upon further optimization resulted in 1 as a potent HIV-1 nucleotide competing reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NcRTI). Investigation of the SAR at N-1 allowed significant improvements in potency and when combined with the incorporation of heterocycles at C-8 resulted in potent analogues not requiring a basic amine to achieve antiviral activity. Additional modifications at N-1 resulted in 33 which demonstrated excellent antiviral potency and improved physicochemical properties.
