Red Deer Resequencing Reveals the Importance of Sex Chromosomes for Reconstructing Late Quaternary Events.

Sex chromosomes differ in their inheritance properties from autosomes and hence may encode complementary information about past demographic events. We compiled and analyzed a range-wide resequencing data set of the red deer (Cervus elaphus), one of the few Eurasian herbivores of the Late Pleistocene megafauna still found throughout much of its historic range. Our analyses of 144 whole genomes reveal striking discrepancies between the population clusters suggested by autosomal and X-chromosomal data.

This disease, due to prions, has proliferated in North America in a contagious manner. In several mammalian species, polymorphisms in the prion protein gene (PRNP) play a crucial role in the susceptibility to prions and their spread.

Early-life glucocorticoids accelerate lymphocyte count senescence in roe deer.

Immunosenescence corresponds to the progressive decline of immune functions with increasing age. Although it is critical to understand what modulates such a decline, the ecological and physiological drivers of immunosenescence remain poorly understood in the wild. Among them, the level of glucocorticoids (GCs) during early life are good candidates to modulate immunosenescence patterns because these hormones can have long-term consequences on individual physiology.

Changes in the risk of exposure to infectious disease agents can be tracked through variations in antibody prevalence in vertebrate host populations. However, information on the temporal dynamics of the immune status of individuals is critical. If antibody levels persist a long time after exposure to an infectious agent, they could enable the efficient detection of the past circulation of the agent; if they persist only a short time, they could provide snap shots of recent exposure of sampled hosts.

Living in variable and unpredictable environments, organisms face recurrent stressful situations. The endocrine stress response, which includes the secretion of glucocorticoids, helps organisms to cope with these perturbations. Although short-term elevations of glucocorticoid levels are often associated with immediate beneficial consequences for individuals, long-term glucocorticoid elevation can compromise key physiological functions such as immunity.

Evaluating facilitators' challenges administering a program building on existing strengths in families facing difficulties.

The primary objective of this study was to understand the challenges faced by 12 facilitators (9 women and 3 men) of the Strengthening Families Program (SFP) implemented in the Adélard-Dugré and Jean-Nicolet neighbourhoods of Trois-Rivières, Quebec. This objective was operationalized as the following question: How did facilitators manage to buy in to, and align themselves with, program principles while avoiding an expert stance and remaining focused on participating families' strengths? This question has not been investigated before in connection with the SFP program. This study was conducted between 2011 and 2014, and relied on semi-annual group interviews.

Low prevalence of hepatitis E virus in the liver of Corsican pigs slaughtered after 12 months despite high antibody seroprevalence.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection can be acute and benign or evolve to chronic hepatitis with rapid progression toward cirrhosis or liver failure in humans. Hence, hepatitis E (HE) disease is a major public health concern. In countries where pig populations are highly contaminated with HEV, human cases of HE are mainly foodborne, occurring frequently after consumption of raw or undercooked pork products or liver.

Use of Mobile-Based Application for Collection of Patient-Reported Outcomes in Cardiac Surgery.

Objective: Application-based (app) technology has been studied for patient engagement and collecting patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in several surgical specialties with limited research in cardiac surgery. The aim of study was to determine the effectiveness of app-based technology for collecting PROs, improving the patient experience, and reducing health services utilization in a cardiac surgery center.

The fitting of tracking devices to wild animals requires capture and handling which causes stress and can potentially cause injury, behavioural modifications that can affect animal welfare and the output of research. We evaluated post capture and release ranging behaviour responses of roe deer () for five different capture methods. We analysed the distance from the centre of gravity and between successive locations, using data from 14 different study sites within the EURODEER collaborative project.

DNA methylation as a tool to explore ageing in wild roe deer populations.

DNA methylation-based biomarkers of ageing (epigenetic clocks) promise to lead to new insights into evolutionary biology of ageing. Relatively little is known about how the natural environment affects epigenetic ageing effects in wild species. In this study, we took advantage of a unique long-term (>40 years) longitudinal monitoring of individual roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) living in two wild populations (Chizé and Trois-Fontaines, France) facing different ecological contexts, to investigate the relationship between chronological age and levels of DNA methylation (DNAm).

Optimizing Timing of Valve Intervention in Patients With Asymptomatic Severe Valvular Heart Disease.

The management of valvular heart disease has changed dramatically over the past decade with advances in cardiac imaging, the use of novel biomarkers, and the development of transcatheter valve repair and replacement technology. International society guidelines have kept pace to provide recommendations for diagnosis, follow-up, and timing of intervention. The most challenging patient cohort for clinicians are patients with asymptomatic severe disease in whom the optimal timing of intervention can be ill-defined.

Rare-Earth Sulfide Nanocrystals from Wet Colloidal Synthesis: Tunable Compositions, Size-Dependent Light Absorption, and Sensitized Rare-Earth Luminescence.

We report the synthesis of colloidal EuS, LaS, and LaS nanocrystals between 150 and 255 °C using rare-earth iodides in oleylamine. The sulfur source dictates phase selection between LaS and LaS, which are stabilized for the first time as colloidal nanocrystals. The indirect bandgap absorption of LaS shifts from 635 nm for nanoellipsoids to 365 nm for square-based nanoplates.

Patients And Methods: Data of consecutive ovarian cancer patients treated by laparoscopy were matched 1:1 to a cohort of patients operated by laparotomy using a propensity score matching. The inclusion criteria included patients who underwent a complete staging procedure in the early stages and optimal upfront or interval debulking surgery for advanced ovarian cancer.

Sudden Tamponade From Vein Graft Side Branch Avulsion on Removal of Temporary Pacemaker Wires.

Temporary epicardial pacing wires are universally used in cardiac surgery and are associated with very low morbidity and mortality. Although rare, serious complications can occur with pacing wires. We present a case of avulsion of a saphenous vein graft side branch caused by removal of pacing wires and leading to pericardial tamponade.

The prevalence of mitral valve disease has evolved over the past 5 decades from primarily a disease of rheumatic origin to a disease affecting the aging population that encompasses a range of phenotypes from rheumatic mitral stenosis, degenerative mitral regurgitation, and degenerative mitral valve calcification to secondary mitral regurgitation. A reflection on the history of therapy for mitral valve disease is an expedition that follows the birth and development of structural heart intervention from the first percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty to innovative technologies for transcatheter mitral valve repair and replacement. The Department of Surgery of the Université de Montréal was officially chartered in 1961, but the structure had been in place since since 1951. The department grew as a fusion of hospital-based surgery training programs from the largest French-speaking hospitals in Montreal. Currently 448 professors (135 women and 313 men) teach in the department.
